If you can get a R5 3600 and a B450 board that has the correct BIOS to run it out of the box then you should definitely get one. It's an absolutely amazing CPU at it's price point. Depending on where you buy the motherboard from they might update the BIOS for you before the board is shipped. It'll come with a Ryzen 3000 series ready sticker on the box.

spend the extra and upgrade your GPU instead, your i5 will be fine for a few more years

Upgrade the GPU to a 1060, and throw im another 8GB of ram dude, you've got a great system there!

if you can find a 8GB RX 480 or 580 in that price point then go for that however thst might take some time to find one, if your looking to buy the card in like the next day or so then i'd go with the 1060 6gb  

I would get R7 1700 and decent mobo, you will get great multicore performance and probably cheaper than with espresso lake
Edit: If you have Z170, try to get an i7 for cheap, their price will fall because covfefe lake

unplug your CPUs cable and then turn the system on if it powers on (your fans start spinning etc), then it's your CPU, try resetting your CMOS first though

(longshot) do you access to another motherboard that you can drop your CPU into maybe a friend that has a motherboard with the same socket or something? 

Replaced the motherboard and it seems to be powering on just fine! I haven't set it up yet to make sure everything is working properly but it's getting further than it was before, anyway. And i'm not even out any money...yet!
