  1. That's the question. Does anybody know what input the fan LEDs use ?
  2. Is it possible to control any make of RGB fan (the lighting only obviously - not power) from the RGB header of an ASUS Aura mobo. The Header outputs the relatively standard 12V,G,R,B format and can drive 5050 strips. The question is does any make of RGB fan run off that format (even if crossw wired). Particularly interested in Corsair, NZXT, Thermaltake. I'd hate to have to buy the controllers just to find out!
  3. Could you explain the practicalities or benefits of that to an amateur. Would I not just be left with a load of excess cable to hide? Thank you! Thanks - I just stuck a number in to remind me to buy them, I am not sure if they will cost that much. I just thought the moddy ones looked a little better than the Cablemod ones. I certainly will look at those price differences when I go to push the button. Doesn't seem to be any significant performance differences. Thanks for all the advice.

Thanks for that, it hadn't even crossed my mind to think about a big beast M.2. That is now a definite. (but they really should make it on a black pcb!) Everybody is consistent in suggesting the i7-6800K with an X99 board. I get the processor core issue having done some more reading, but had not really considered X99 as I was in 1150 mode. Any idiots guide on benefits and disadvantages of the X99 vs z170. I have updated the part list to include the Asus Strix board which will sync lighting nicely with the Strix GPU. That sets me a new challenge - any suggestions on how to connect RGB fans to the RGB header on the mobo (so I can sync mobo, GPU, RGB strips, and fans with the Aura software). Is there anything available out of the box, or has anybody any experience of DIY hacks. http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/fpD4gL
  5. Thanks Katsunaka. I took a look at your build and it is almost a copy. I'll take it on that basis that I am moving in the right direction.
  6. Hi everyone, Having been a reader for a while I am posting for the first time. Although I have built power station panels in the past, this is my first PC build. I have gained amazing knowledge from the forum and Linus's videos already, so I hope you can help me avoid any major mistakes. Your insights into the sense and madness in this build plan would be appreiated. 1. Budget & Location I am based in Ireland so most purchases will probably come from the UK. One positive from the Brexit decision is that Sterling has fallen! I definitely don't want to spend more than €3,000 and would be happy to spend a bit less! But it has to be right and look right. The price excludes monitors, Keyboard, NAS, and the power supply which I already have. 2. Aim The machine has to be 1) A work machine: Run some badly written macros that open and close excel files to run calculations - sometimes the routine would have 25,000 steps using hundreds of excel files. Small increments of speed opening and closing files make a huge difference here. All the usual office stuff with 20 tabs open when collating reports. Video Production (Adobe Captivate) Video Editing (Adobe Premier Pro) I also use a range of programmes for ripping, extracting and reworking videos to and from different formats. Audio recording via external USB amp Audio Editing (Adobe Audition) 2. A play machine Mostly for Photography (Adobe Lightroom/Bridge and Photoshop) Have never been a video gamer but you ever know. I am super busy most of the time and so instant response from software tools is really important to me. Any small incremental gains in loading speeds will be valuable. I want to be able to keep all the tabs open, email running, Spotify streaming, Photoshop Open, Captivate Open and Adobe Premier Pro open and encoding all at the same time with as limited fall off in response times as possible. Basically when I want it I want it all and I want it now (while at the same time in the background we are uploading data files at 35Megs or downloading at 300 (on gigabit wired LAN). 3. Monitors 3 x Dell U2414M Ultrasharp. Will move to an Ultrawide (like U3415W) when the budget allows. 4. Peripherals No mouse or keyboard in the purchase. Have the Corsair K70 RGB mechanical keyboard It will run Windows 10. 5. Why are you upgrading? I have a Dell XPS desktop (core i7 16GB ram) which has served me pretty well. However it struggles with video and the proprietary mobo has a few known personality flaws, such as not wanting to reboot after a bluescreen event (which happens when doing video work and using hardware acceleration). I could upgrade it, but it owes me nothing and I really fancy a new build (which I may not get time to complete for a few months). I have been using the amazing pcpartpicker to try and scope the build, so any thoughts would be welcome. I realise some of it is overkill, but for example I like the aesthetics of the Strix 1070 and having such a capable GPU should give me a decent length of service. The RGB stuff is just bling I know, but I want it (probably so that I can turn it to solid blue or red after a few weeks and forget about it!). The overall aesthetic is important to me and is black with LED highlights. The unit will sit in the middle of a nice home office, hence the nice looking glass case.
