  1. I think they are seeing some writing on the wall in terms of possible legislative action. It’s better to get ahead of this now than wait for the courts to get involved. And especially with the FTC having said new laws weren’t really necessary for right to repair, just actual enforcement.

The tape workaround would be easy to fix. No image? No game. I wonder if it requires an "always-on" camera, or just a one-time image to unlock. If it's an always on camera you'd have to tape the image to your forehead 😛

I actually think ATMs work this way. I had one on a college campus that would refuse to accept the correct pin because the camera was blocked by my hand. It was by accident at first but then on purpose to see. Once I moved my hand the same pin magically worked just fine.

There have already been a number of huge fines handed to organisations by regulatory authorities over data breaches due to insufficient security and encryption since GDPR's implementation date on 2018-05-25. It would be ironic to see more organisations experiencing data breaches if a new law forced backdoors, which would lead to more huge fines. xD

I want personal devices not so much organizations. Like the raunchy sexting photos sent between them and their spouses or mistresses. Messages about back door dealings. Expose everything!

Again? They just won't stop until it eventually passes won't they?...

Look...the only way we get this to stop is for it to actually go through. And then have their personal devices compromised directly as a result of it and all their dirty dealings and secrets openly published. Then point to their legislation and show them how they fundamentally Allowed it to

happen to themselves. At that point they either repeal the law. Or they never have privacy again and are forever under public scrutiny

This is why I like digital copies (ie the file mp4 or what ever) or physical copies.

    not viewing though said app

Exactly right here. I can work with digital downloads. Long as I get the file to store and back up. If I lose the file then that’s on me.

DVDs & Blurays may be old school, but they have their advantages.

Such as they can be ripped to digital versions?

how is 30% of ice cream machines in new york broken? do they not do maintenance at all?

A lot of time it’s “broken” is likely for maintenance. Especially if you go there the same day of the week and roughly the same time. Our machine had two maintenance cycles. Daily was done automatically at 2am. And weekly tear down and deep clean I did on Thursday at 9pm.

    • Cleaning these things is a pain in the ass, and is a time consuming process.
    • Usually there is only like 1 or 2 people in a place who actually know how to take the thing apart, clean it, and put it back together.
    • Those who do know how to "clean" it, only know how to do a barebones cleaning. (So its always really nasty)
    • These machine have a 'warm up' time that takes 10-20 minutes.

I have worked McDonald’s. And I was one of the few at my McDonald’s who knew how to tear it down. Clean it. Sanitize it. And reassemble. I still got calls from crew for almost a year after I quit asking for help to put it back together. It would take me 2 hours minimum every Thursday starting around 9pm to do the weekly maintenance. And then I would have to spot check the syrup lines to ensure shake calibration was correct. I also handled the McCafé machines...let’s just say you don’t ever want to see the drain for those two machines

But all the server capacity Apples has backing the App Store.

Fast downloades and updates, notifications and so forth. Apple has expenses too, and they are also a company that wants to make money. (Or rather steal them these days, but that is a topic for another thread😎)

Something I have thought about. What if Apple had tiered approach. 30% and Apple will let you list it. And will host the app file. And handle updates etc.

but you can opt for say 10% instead and you have to handle the app file download and updates. Apple just lists it (think torrent tracker) so users can fairly easily find it. The small time basement dwelling devs will probably start at the 30%. But companies like epic could easily handle the infrastructure for their apps and opt for a lower fee

Damn, 2 years already for RTX cards? I'm forgetting how old my GTX 1080Ti is becoming...

I have a 980 Ti at home. And a 970 in my rig in the work truck. I’m due for upgrades myself too. End of the year or early next year hopefully. I’m just now getting my FX8350 upgraded at home...
