DarthSmartt got a reaction from Sorenson in How do I add more ethernet ports to my router?
I’ll recommend the netgear ones. They’ve always worked well for me. I will warn that network switches are very vulnerable to lightning strikes/power surges, so make sure you always have them plugged into a good surge protector as they like to burn out Ethernet ports on your pc as well.

DarthSmartt got a reaction from sub68 in Does anyone else feel like there is no reason to upgrade?
I’m only 15 years old. My parents asked me if I had anything in mind for Christmas. Every year I ask for something pc related. Last year was the quest, year before was a Gtx 1080. This year I really don’t know what to get.

I’ll admit that I am very very spoiled, but anyway... Am I the only one that feels like hardware is evolving too fast for software and even my brain to catch up?
My pc with a 6700k and a gtx 1080 at stock clocks can push games at well over 200fps at 1440p while streaming. And my monitor is only 100hz.

I just feel like there is no need to upgrade because games aren’t getting harder to run. In fact, it’s quite the opposite almost, and I’m still doing just fine on my hardware. Maybe it’s because I don’t play any games competitively anymore. I see some of my friends upgrade their CPU’s and gpus but there really isn’t any point in spending $800 on a new gpu or cpu/motherboard combo.
We are now 5 generations ahead in cpus and 2 in gpus with no real reason to upgrade. I think companies should focus on making products cheaper rather than more powerful. It might make pc an option for console gamers and reduce the gpu scalping that always happens.

Anyway, just me rambling half asleep in my bed at midnight. Reply if you want to... or don’t. Whatever.

I honestly don’t think I need anything for Christmas. I’ll just enjoy the holiday and give some gifts.
Not really my issue. I just thought it was odd that I’m just not as pc interested as I used to be. Since I was 9 or 10 I always wanted something for my pc. This year is the only year I really don’t want anything lol.

    Again... Just rambling. Merry Christmas

DarthSmartt reacted to Aereldor in Is the thermal compound on the die of a 6700k this bad?
It's that bad. Delids yield improvements of up to 25 degrees celsius on 6th and 7th gen chips. I would highly recommend delidding, the risks are low with a delidding tool (3d printable, cheap on ebay), and will increase both the performance and the overall lifespan of the chip.

I don't think there is a easy solution due to connector used on the card itself. However most of the new laptops use Display Port protocol to connect to LCD. If you can somehow wire it up it might work but I honestly wouldn't bother due amount of work required and the complexity of it.

DarthSmartt reacted to WereCatf in Qi charging coil under mousepad
Sure, there's no reason why it wouldn't work. @DarthSmartt mentioned the thickness of the charging-pad being an issue, but you could always open the pad up and take the coil out, extend the wires by a few centimeters and place the coil under the mousepad and toss the PCB in a plastic project-box or similar. Or you could buy a bare set on eBay or similar, like e.g. in the picture below. Just don't buy the cheapest possible Chinese crap, since they often don't have any safety-features.

DarthSmartt reacted to RadiatingLight in Should I upgrade my CPU or GPU?
Also, with a 3900X, you can CPU-encode your video for better video quality than any GPU encoder, and you won't see a performance hit in games.

A CPU upgrade will be (really) wise. That 1080 can still do a good job for games anyway.

You can get a 120V 12000BTU unit! I have one from Pioneer, and its been working great.

Also, do not disconnect your heated baseboards! Mini-splits can't heat your area below if its -25c outside!

Please, please do more research on this. It's a fantastic solution, but you need to know more about it.

DarthSmartt reacted to Inelastic in Water spilled on k95 rgb. the q switch acts wierd
I had an experience like that once. I spilled half a glass of water into a Razer Blackwidow keyboard. I unplugged it and poured the water out. But, instead of using it, I leaned it against a box fan and went to bed. The next day I tested all the keys and they all worked fine. I used it for about 4 or 5 months until I upgraded. I wound up giving that old one to a friend last year. I think he's still using it.

That sucks about Corsair's support. I used to own a case from them and I scratched the acrylic side panel. I ordered a new one from them and they sent it in the thinnest of cardboard boxes with only a thin sheet of bubble wrap protecting it. Not only was the panel bent, the acrylic was scratched. I emailed them and they RMA'd it pretty quickly. The new one was sent in the exact packaging and was also bent. I emailed them again and they sent a new one, same packaging, also bent. I gave up after the 4th one they sent; all came to me bent. I figured it would be faster to take one of the acrylic pieces off one of the bent ones and swap it with the scratched one in my original panel.

NOPE!  It tries to get rid of as much it can but it doesn't completely remove everything where there are zero traces of earlier drivers.  Checking the perform clean install simply puts your nvpanel settings to default.  It does remove the driver then installs new one but it is not completely removed.  This is where DDU kicks in.

DarthSmartt got a reaction from derrickd241 in Planning a new amd pc.
To be 100% honest I havn't found g-sync and free-sync worth paying extra for. It is kind of a gimmick, but if that is something you wanted, then I would go AMD. Usually with a 1080 or vega, your framerates stay in a range where it is smooth over 60 fps but not high enough to have screen tearing. There is other ways to deal with screen tearing. It's up to you. Free-sync might not be a bad investment since it is so cheap.
