I’ve been following LTT on YouTube for years, and it occurred to me today that the post-NCIX channel is 7 years old now with one of its very first videos being a review of the EVGA X58 board.
Back in 2009 I spent stupid money on an X58 rig with the i7 965 Extreme (4 cores + HT), 2 ATI 4870X2’s & 12GB DDR3 – expensive I know, but I’m still using it to this day – only two upgrades have been made in these past 7 years – SSD’s and replaced the 4870X2’s with a GTX 580. The X58 chipset itself is “as-is”, rock solid and super stable.
What I am VERY curious to find out however, is how a system such as this would handle modern GPU’s such as the 1080’s or perhaps a titan “xp” – there seems to be lots of debate as to whether the i7 965 & lack of pcie3 would bottleneck it or not? If it can run the 1080, does that mean it could do VR? VR on a 7 year old PC? that would be funny as hell.
I would love to see some proper benchmarks on the x58/i7965 with GTX 1080 / Titan vs modern systems (VR?)
I was thinking this would be a cool Idea for a simple video perhaps. Would be nice to see how the x58 and “enthusiast mantra” has stood the test of time.
