I just finished my masters in architecture. She is going to want something with a high clock speed for all the single threaded tasks in CAD and Rhino. The faster the better, especially if she is planning on working parametrically with things like grasshopper. More cores are good for rendering, but many of the rendering programs(vray maxwell octane) also use cuda now so you could allocate that workload to the GPU. Unless she is using CATIA there will be very little real world difference between a g series graphics card and a quaddro. My gtx1080 has way better viewport performance than a friends quadro m4000 in rhino. Here is a link to the Rhino benchmarking results thread. Considering the shift in computing strategies between deep blue and deep mind, or the chess game vs go. Im sure deep mind will beat an expert starcraft player much sooner than anticipated. Deep mind didn't win GO by brute force calculations but pattern recognition generated by playing against itself a ridiculous number of times leading up to the match.

It doesn't take massive amounts of computing power to simulate solar exposure in real time within a project. It does take lots of power to render photo real in real time though. I can't imagine rendering in real-time at this level of detail.

Im an Architecture student with a gtx 970. I primarily use rhino 5, revit, the adobe suite, maxwell and vray. Get a gtx, I have had zero problems with mine. Can Lumion use the gpu fro rendering or is it cpu bound? If its gpu then you should get the nicest gtx you can afford. My current Rhino File is 1.5 gb and viewport performance in shaded and rendered mode is great. If you need further convincing watch this video
