  1. No bent pins that I was able to identify. The strange thing is that it happens so sporadically. I'll get this issue once every couple months at most. I would assume that a mobo or cpu issue would be more frequent and get progressively worse until it fails.
  2. So my desktop was running fine when suddenly I lost display output and keyboard connection (or at least the RGBs turned off). The fans were still running and everything else seemed normal. I restarted a couple times to no results. I then did the following: Reset CMOS Battery (resulted in keyboard RGB now permanently on even with desktop powered off, but no display output) Pulled RAM off slot 2 (resulted in normal function) Placed same RAM stick onto slot 3 (resulted in normal function, both sticks operating normally as far as I can tell) My question is, why would something like this happen and will I still be able to run dual-channel using slots 3 and 4 rather than 2 and 4? My specs: 2x 8GB RAM (Ripjaws I think) i5-6600k non-OC Asus Z-170e MOBO GTX 1070ti This has happened a couple times before too, and sometimes it just...works again after I leave it alone for a bit. No idea why, but I'm worried it will get progressively worse. I'm at work right now so I can't use CPU-Z to check if it's running dual-channel right now, but would it be correct to assume it's a mobo issue rather than a RAM stick issue since it's the slot that matters? Thanks for all the help!
  3. Hi all. Kinda new here, but I figured this would be the best place to ask this (please move to appropriate place if it's not!). I recently ordered a Sager NP8156 to replace my aging MSI laptop, and I wanted to give it a more personal feel this time around. Originally I was going to order through XoticPC and take up their laser etching services, but I was worried about hidden brokerage fees and whatnot due to shipping from the US to Canada. I ultimately decided to ship with ReflexNoteBooks, which was cheaper but had no laser etching options. Does anyone know of any shops in the Vancouver area that offer laser etching or other personalized laptop lid customizations? If not, I was thinking about just getting a laptop skin from decalgirl - but I'm not sure about the quality of those. Thanks!
  4. I'm not sure if this qualifies under "reviews" per se, but it'd be great if Linus and the team could go over the best way to approach buying more customized laptops internationally. I live in Canada (actually like 30 minutes from LMG HQ), but I had such a difficult time trying to figure out how to buy my now shipping Sager NP8156 because most Sager Re-Sellers are based out of the states. I tried looking up reviews for different companies that ship internationally, how the shipping/fees/taxes are handled and such, but there's no real concrete complied information out there. Ended up buying from ReflexNoteBooks, but even then it was quite a gong-show with their site not having up-to-date info and whatnot.
  5. Thanks! I'll definitely be attempting to reapply in the near future. I just find it strange that my chassis would be cooler than before, even though the temperatures are way up now.
  6. Arctic Silver 5. I used a credit card to spread it thinly over the chips. I read afterwards that it's better to just drop a bit on the CPU/GPU and let the pressure of the heat-sink spread it properly, but before I just used what I knew from spreading solder paste over circuit boards.
  7. I wasn't expecting it to be cool, but for it to constantly reach 93 degrees at moderate/heavy load seemed strange. I was aware that the MSI GS60 had cooling issues, but my real question is if I messed up the thermal paste application and how temperature calibrations on GPU/CPUs can even be checked. Undervolting seems interesting though, I will definitely look into that thanks. The GS60 runs at 5.5k RPM at load at all times, which I believe is max anyways.
  8. Hi all I'm new here, pleased to meet everyone. I've been struggling with some GPU/CPU issues with my MSI GS60 for a while now, and was hoping to find some insight here at the forums. About a month or two ago I noticed that while under load (Games in particular) my GPU would climb straight to 93 degrees Celsius and the chassis would become very very hot. The CPU, at this point, was still in a reasonable if slightly high temperature range of 70-85 under load. So I bought a cooling pad, hoping it would help out. Long story short, it didn't really. At this point I would play a game like Overwatch and get ~50-70 fps, and something like CSGO at ~115-150 fps. I was slightly concerned that long term use at peaks temperatures would affect the longevity of my laptop, so I decided to re-apply thermal paste. Bought myself some Arctic Cooling Paste and applied it. Should note that I self applied, since I didn't want to pay $140 for it, and I only have experience in applying solder paste. For about 1-2 weeks my laptop ran exactly the same as before. No FPS drops, no temperature changes. I was disappointed, but not concerned. But then after about 2 weeks my GPU AND CPU began to climb straight to 93 degrees and throttle fps significantly. It would start out okay, only slightly worse than pre-thermal paste change, but once it hit 93 it would quickly drop in frames. At its lowest, I would be getting ~15-25 fps on Overwatch and ~60-80 fps on CSGO. The strange thing is, the chassis is actually not nearly as hot as before (despite being at double peak temperatures). I'm not sure if this is the result of poorly applied thermal paste, an issue with the temperature detection system, or the death throes of both the GPU and CPU. Any help would be greatly appreciated! P.S. This laptop was a pain in the arse to take apart. I don't know why MSI made the heat sink so inaccessible. And I don't think it's an issue with the fans.
