System Error Message got a reaction from ItTakes2ToMango in Kaspersky antivirus
quite wrong. Most of the people here dont know a thing about anti viruses. I've hanged around cybersecurity long enough to know a lot of malware creators will always beat many anti virus and many of them dont even bother to improve their product.

Malwarebytes pro or not is worse than windows defender. The best anti virus based on detection is kaspersky. The best anti virus based on protection behaviour is bitdefender. Sophos is decent after those 2 and provides a lot of other security.

Essentially if you want to choose your anti malware, just base it around these 3. All other providers cant even compare. It doesnt matter what some products were in the past. Some AVs have done dodgy things like use your PC for bitcoin or even selling your data like avast recently. Avast was one of the best more than a decade and today is one of the worst, same for malwarebytes that provides absolutely no runtime protection even their pro version. You could argue their offline scan.

Kaspersky moved their company out of russia long ago. The incident was more about the CIA not being happy that their backdoors and zero day exploits didnt work with kaspersky so tried to shame them away. There are some companies that i avoid like the plague for many reasons one of which tends to be CIA meddling in their security which also affects their quality. Netgear is a big victim of this where they have backdoors and their quality is terrible, used to be long ago netgear hardware quality was top notch even when their firmwares left much to be desired. Ubiquiti falls under here for being very dodgy as well and less capable. I see mikrotiks as a datacenter preferred with other brands only used per customer request but no ubiquiti for example, and peope love to freak out about every exploit rather than read what the exploit actually is. For example spectre and meltdown allowed access to the data of another application though difficult if done right could get keys and passwords or other sensitive data whereas mikrotik's vulnerabilities could only happen if you leave your management exposed which is something you are supposed to block as part of initial config.

There have been proper tests done that i base my recommendation on with tests done on detection and protection. Theres no point being able to detect a malware like malwarebytes case but it fails to even protect. Granted these tests did push some brands to actually improve their product but even fancy AV like cloudstrike does a terrible job and having used it at work before, gets in my way more than actually protect.

chromebooks became a mistake when people were overpricing them for crap hardware. Otherwise they're really great. Yes you cant do much with them but thats the point of any computer sold for education or such, restricted only for the use it is intended for. Otherwise chromebooks and can do a lot and google play is coming to it so you can run android apps on chromebooks too. Open office on linux can work with MS office files and can offer more functionality. I had star office in the past which had way more functionality than ms office offered in the past and i got it free along with SunOS and a whole bunch of other very useful software.

The bulldozer architecture isnt ryzen, the numbering is different.

At all cost avoid the bulldozer architecture for game hosting. This is from experience with physics heavy games that even my lowerclocked 1st gen iseries xeon is faster for much less frequency and single thread. for web/media/files the bulldozer is ok.

System Error Message got a reaction from ArduinoBen in Rumor: Intel to bring Coffee Lake-H Specs - Bringing 6C/12T to notebooks (up to 4.8 GHz Turbo)
Cooling in laptops do need to be improved but its not too bad. I have an old alienware that i can clock up to 4Ghz with the i7 ivybridge on all 4 cores with decent thermals but only after servicing it. Alienware themselves can cool a 130W GPU well on the alienware 15 so i see no reason why this cant be done.

Kabylake i7-7700hq turbo boost uses 65W, not 45W. The 45W is for the base clocks. If power and temps are good, it will boost, if not it wont, and this is the main problem that many laptop manufacturers, even alienware dont get which is why many laptops come with power bricks not powerful enough or heatsinks not powerful enough.

The cooler the CPU is, the less power it uses. This is true for every processor so being able to run a 6 core with turbo boost is entirely possible as you guys seem to forget that coffee lake does get shrinks. The problem i see is the intel HD graphics, my current laptop has the intel HD graphics 630 with 24 shaders and so on GPU resources, i dont see how UHD is gonna be better this way except in clocks. If manufacturers could pair the CPU with HBM that would make for a very nice ultrabook and a boost to IGP performance.

If only intel would allocate more TDP for CPUs with IGPs, you'd get a very nice portable processing power house by using both CPU and IGP but with 45W you cant use either at max at the same time.

All drives have hidden storage that is only there to use as spare for when sectors start getting damaged. This is also the same with SSDs to prolong their life but not all flash does this. When a file is deleted, its entry is removed but the data is still there. If you have not written to the drive you will be able to recover it but if you use the drive after deleting a file, high chance it will be overriden.
No writing happens during or after delete. the files are not moved and said files get written over like they werent there.

System Error Message got a reaction from asus killer in Games that can run on 32mb vram
that shares VRAM with system ram. Make sure your ram is in dual channel and as fast as possible. HD 4000 can be allocated up to 1GB of vram in bios and if it doesnt have enough vram it'd use the OS allocated ram. However it really makes no difference how much you allocate as OS allocated ram usage will only be a little slower as the OS will have to release it to the GPU first but no difference in performance in general as the IGP isnt particularly fast.

So dont worry about the amount of vram you have.

System Error Message got a reaction from asus killer in EV and more environmentally health future?
Environmentalists think that electric cars are green, this is not true.
    1) The carbon footprint of producing an electric car is more than a diesel or petrol car. The batteries, chemicals, etc produce a lot of bad waste for the environment compared to just making metals and pipes (or in the case of BMW and other german manufacturers, plastics).

    2) Electricity isnt generated cleanly everywhere, and the grid cant handle it. This can lead to brownouts, burning more fuels for electricity, etc

To offset the environmental impact of producing an electric car vs fuel, you'd have to drive the car for more than its battery lifespan.

The answer to a greener future is not electric cars or hybrids, its hydrogen. Hydrogen as a fuel is already possible with minor modifications to a petrol engine. Hydrogen as a fuel only burns to produce water and water can be separated back using green means like solar and other means.

If electric cars were the future, companies would be buying tesla but tesla suffers from quality issues and their lorries, only a few are ordered peer large companies for the cool factor and PR, not for the numbers. Even the cost of buying a tesla is so much more that regular people just cant afford it. If tesla cant produce a car for around $14000 than it has not solved any problems.

Removing and recycling old cars on the road will reduce the environmental impact far more than putting more cars onto the road, even if electric/hybrid.

System Error Message got a reaction from SilkyDistress in Why do people hate alienware.
As owner of 2 alienwares let me explain properly and cut through many bs or bias.
Firstly alienware was its own brand, while it was pricey it did offer quite a lot of benefits. Firstly was upgradeability. The CPU and dual mxm slots of the original alienware 17 with many sata slots, 4 ram slots and even the physx card in mobile form (removable).

Dell then bought alienware and designed them like they designed their XPS laptops on the inside. a CPU and GPU that you couldnt upgrade, fake 2nd fan port, mediocre hardware for the price, the list goes on. However alienware was still a quality product at this point despite the poor bios (remember the keplers throttling at 75C on these laptops?). So dell basically took away all the made alienware great on the inside but priced it like apple does. ( i own one of these laptops which i have a custom bios. Its sitting in pieces as i have to buy internal cables and resolder some connectors back on. With these laptops, regardless of size you only get 2 ram slots, and either 1 or 2 drive slots built in (excluding disc drive).

Now we have the new alienware that has pascal GPU. Pricing on these are much better but the hardware quality took a big dive. Not only can you not upgrade CPU or GPU, while the bios is better you still only get 2 ram slots. Ofcourse 3 m.2 slots is a nicer touch but i bought this new as it was the cheapest laptop that did what i want. Like every OEM, choices were terrible. I wanted the highest end alienware 15 with nvidia optimus so i could have a 10 hour battery life power house for portable software development, i had to deal with 6MB of cache and a locked CPU instead of 8MB of cache and an unlocked CPU with the gtx 1070. Other brands can do gsync and IGP switch yet alienware cant that its not on the cutting edge. You cant even have white LEDs  Coding requires a lot of CPU power for both compilations and the virtualisation of testing that is why i usually recommend coders get the best CPU they can get, this is actually where AMD beats intel in the desktop/server space. Dells pro support is good though and works internationally, however they still took many efforts just to fix a board failure and warranty is only 1 year (WD can give WD blacks a 5 year warranty even for a laptop WD black). Despite this, the price is lower than razor for the hardware and razor shares a lot of hardware/quality issues too.

The new alienware has plenty of faults. For one the board isnt great (older gens mention it too). At the time i bought it on offer (would never buy it at standard price). The Alienware AGA however is a huge problem because of an intentional bios feature that disables your onboard nvidia card when you use it hence making it useless if you use a non GPU (doesnt work with a NIC, i tested). For me i bought the alienware for this feature because it meant i could have 2 eGPUs attached but portability was important too. the AGA isnt portable  as you have to restart (thinkpads with the 2501 full dock could hot swap PCIe on the dock (if you had a GPU there) and the expresscard too. I used to run a 2 desktop GPU setup with it giving me a total of 3 nvidia GPUs to work with.

Despite these issues, the new alienware isnt too bad. Its certainly got a better GPU for coding than the XPS line, good for those who game as well, it has AGA and thunderbolt, price isnt too bad for specs and you can have a 10 hour battery life if you need a portable powerhouse. To me size doesnt matter and the haters tend to overhate because they cant afford it. There is more quality to the current line of alienwares unlike the previous chassis and there are some things i hate about it feature wise however you should not buy an alienware for any brand loyalty. When picking a laptop, pick what best suits your needs. The alienware for me was the cheapest option for a portable powerhouse that having 2 eGPUs was actually helpful. I am able to diagnose a GPU, even modify its bios much easier

Regardless all of my attempts at contacting dell regarding the stupid AGA bios of disabling the onboard GPU (no hotswap because of this) has gone unheard. As a software developer who will release software that makes use of multi GPU acceleration, this is basically a reason not to consider alienware and to go for other cheaper laptops with thunderbolt.

Threads of alienware hate pops out all the time. dell quality is still better than acer, the main reason is that people see alienware owners as arrogant while they cant afford one so they hate in order to justify their purchase of cheaper laptops. Many people dont even upgrade their laptops but the option to upgrade the CPU, GPU and have more internal slots and IO is still an important consideration. Its just like when you see a hyper/supercar parked infront of the building you go to (despite the area being a no parking zone and guards not caring), however while most people will hate, the best people will aspire to be better than the owners of those cars despite driving a poverty pack car at that time. Now we see many laptops that are better than alienware but their prices and battery life just dont match the alienware when on offer and with coupons especially with the config that i want.

System Error Message got a reaction from shrimpgfx in Should I buy ram from aliexpress?
its all to do with the brand and models. For example kingston and corsair value rams are a big no (too many error prone rams despite warranty). Go with proper ram such as team dark, g.skill, crucial, corsair, kingston but no value rams or generic rams (cruicial standard ram is fine though). Some standard ram that offer hynix/samsung chips are fine too as long as they are branded under a decent brand.

Many people dont know but patriot is one of the crappy brands for ram.
