Which one is more stable??? Maybe I should use 16.04 just to be safe...

Id get ubuntu, it has the most support, and mint is just ubuntu with a skin and some preinstalled software.

For min, id get the cinnamon version. XFCE is designed for lowend systems withount much ram. MATE is for the people who like old software and never want to upgrade and KDE is different, you can try it, but id try cinnanmon for now. These are also just the desktop enviro's so they will preform and work the same

You can also Install all of these desktop enviroments on one install and switch when you log in.

Ubuntu is a bad option for older systems. Unity is pretty resource intensive.
Mint is Ubuntu, minus Canonical's software store, and with different default desktop environments.

I would get Cinnamon, unless your PC is reasonably old, then I would get MATE.

Well, I can think of a few projects that would be very fun, some more software based, some more hardware based, some difficult on both sides. I have a sneaking suspicion that this list might well be the most challenging Arduino task list to date:

Store and read data from a Hard Drive. Some say this is impossible, but Arduino allows external interrupts, so it is most certainly possible. Use the Arduino to add EFI to a lawnmower engine. Find a way to double the number of output pins the Arduino has (You will have to learn some digital logic). (This is probably the easiest challenge in the list) Write "Hello World" to an LCD Matrix display programming the Arduino ONLY in ARM assembler. (This is probably the hardest challenge in the list)

Don't always think big, sometimes small can be just as fun, and take just as long.

I think you'd enjoy programming a microcontroller to keep things really tiny. Or use one of Adafruit's feather boards.

Just an idea though, you don't have to do it.

Those all sound like software-based projects, so I would venture into hardware for sure. Buttons, sensors, motors, anything to get you breadboarding and experimenting is great. I think last year for his engineering project my friend made a heat-seeking fan, but the sky is the limit

Having just graduated from Uni, I can tell you that I if I could, I would go back in time and slap myself silly for wanting to go to uni. Also don't kid yourself into thinking that its only 9K per year, by the time you add on interest, accommodation, and loans, it's almost double the price.  I would certainly look into apprenticeships, I know a few are in apprenticeships and they are being paid to go to uni.

9000£ a year? Is that Cambridge, Oxford or the Imperial College of London (cheaper entry courses or a special scholarship) o-o? If i had the chance to go to Cambridge i wouldnt even think twice xD!

Or were those universities like 40,000£ per month o-o?

I said no to Uni and took an Apprenticeship in IT. I'm earning and learning, getting professional certifications along the way. In my opinion employers are often going to want those with relevant experience, which is what working as an apprentice teaches.

I've got a few Microsoft certifications this year and I hope to continue getting them as I'm working. I find that working also gives you time to find a style of work which fits you, so you can get a better grasp as to what direction you want to go on in for the rest of your life. What if you took a degree in networking, then got a job in networking, only to realise that the uni stuff was not comparable to it?

    That's just me though

AMD's FX series of CPU's is 5 years old which is old for a processor. Their 8 cores processors are slower than intels quad core processors. AMD's CPU's dont use a newer architecture or smaller manufacturing process. Which means, More power draw, More Heat, Less overclocking potential. Why pick AMD's proessors when you could get one of intels quad cores for the same price as AMD's. Intel's CPU's will overclock better, Have much better gaming performance, Have higher single core performance, And use less electricity and overclock better. Zen will update upon the FX series and will be a pretty decent line of new CPU's.

There's a legitimate issue with Bulldozer (FX processors) IPC (instructions per clock) as well as it's multi-threading not being truly multi-threaded. I believe it's only one floating point unit per core. But, this means that even with higher clock speeds, those CPU's can't compete with Intel of lower clock speeds.

On the other side of things, the Athlon/APU models are different. They typically have 4 physical cores and aren't too bad on IPC. They still can't compete with Intel's performance though. However, these processors are cheap, and so are their motherboards (typically). With these, people are able to make reasonable PC's for not too much. These are also able to be overclocked without needing a special SKU of processor or motherboard.

Intel is ahead of AMD when it comes to IPC and single threaded performance. And most games prefer around four fast cores versus eight slower cores, but this criteria applies to Intel's CPUs as well where the more expensive server-grade chips can actually perform worse in video games than the mainstream counterparts due to the lower clock speed.

That being said, my experience with AMD CPUs is limited, although I do have an APU in my server which seems to be doing just fine. Just to give an idea of what I do with the server: It runs two Minecraft instances, transcodes Plex content, and also deals with file transfers.
