  1. I performed a search in the forums for the keyword "NAS" and it did not produce any results. Thank you for showing me this thread, I will be using that thread for the answers to my questions. Thank you for all feedback provided above. I will be repurposing my old gaming rig to set up a NAS.
  2. I was looking into whether I should purchase a NAS (only need about 4TB of data to be stored on it) or build a NAS from an old machine (Frankenstein NAS)? I am looking for a new NAS (hopefully with HDDs) that is decent in performance and under $300. Use Case: Backup my current desktop (2TB of data currently stored on it) Torrent files Media Home server (DLNA) Cloud Backup to CrashPlan Any feedback or alternatives would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Thanks for the insight. I am in the process of moving my VMs from my old HDD (1TB Green) to the 2TB drive. I believe the performance issues I faced on the old HDD was due to it being a green drive, only 5400RPM.
  4. Good Afternoon Everyone, I currently have two 840 pros in Raid 0, but I am wanting to break the RAID and only use one for my OS and Games. I am going to start using VMware Workstation with my Technet subscription to make a bunch of VMs. My question is whether I should break the RAID 0 and use one of the SSDs to store the VMs on or just sell the SSD and use my 2TB for the VMs? Multiple VMs will be running at the same time and I know that the 2TB read might bottleneck, but will the SSD also have the bottleneck issue? Or if anyone can look at my config below and let me know of another alternative with the HDDs I have. CPU: 3770k Mobo: DZ77GA-70k Cooling: H100i RAM: 4x 4GB Vengeance 1600Mhz GPU: GTX 660ti HDDs: 2x 840 Pro 256GB (raid 0) 1x 2TB Barracuda ST2000DM001 1x 3TB Barracuda ST3000DM001 Thanks!
  5. Sorry for not clarifying. I would like to find the best solution for a full image backup of my 2 SSDs that will be my OS (512gb). I want to have this full image backed up on another local disk (I have a 1tb or 2tb to choose from). I would like this backup to be very frequent as my SSDs will be in RAID0 ( I know, I know) and I want to have a quick way to recover if one SSD fails. I would like a local backup with an option for a cloud backup, but not a necessity as I use Dropbox for most of my important "everyday" files. I hope this provides a little more direction.
  6. Just trying to get different opinions on backup solutions (software not NAS) through experience and not just reviews online. Thanks!
  7. One other question regarding the backup of this RAID 0. Does anyone have any preferred backup methods to ensure that my information is essentially "imaged" to another drive for quick restore? FYI -- I will have 3 other HDDs in this setup (1x 500GB, 1x 1TB, 1x 2TB) all 7200 RPM seagate. Thanks again for any help that can be provided.
  8. Thank you for all of the help! Wish me luck ;)
  9. Thanks for the starting help. Just to clarify, the steps above are to be done prior to windows 7 install? After installing windows do I then update the intel RST? Or do I download the floppy version of intel RST and load those drivers for install?
  10. I am rebuilding my rig and have just purchased 2 840pro 256gb SSDs with the goal of placing them in a RAID 0 config for performance. After browsing online, I did not find too many definitive guides to walk through this process correctly with SSDs. I have never configured a RAID before and just want to make sure I perform the steps in the correct order as to not have redundant work involved. Thanks for any help that can be provided. This is what my rig will be upgraded to: CPU: 3770k Mobo: DZ77GA-70k Cooling: H100i RAM: 4x 4GB Vengeance 1600Mhz Sound Card: SoundBlaster Recon 3D Fatal1ty Pro PSU: Coolmax 750W GPU: HD 5750 (2 in crossfire)
  11. Just to help with the consistency of the temps. What program is everyone using to check the temps? That can make a difference in the results provided. IMO
  12. Thanks for all of the feedback. I appreciate the honesty provided on this forum :) I will take these options into consideration when looking for a new GPU.
  13. Umm, good question. Probably about $200-300 and then use the money for selling my 5750s to add on to this saved amount.
  14. Any thoughts of a nicer single card? I am trying to get the most out of my 3770k and SSD.
