So I followed this article on lifehacker about "How to Migrate to a Solid-State Drive Without Reinstalling Windows" so I followed the instructions. My C: drive (57gb) fits the ssd (59gb) but when I boot using the ssd. "Please insert bootable media" tried using a repair disc but my operating system won't show up.

So it turns out I have to wait like 20 minutes to get to desktop with his hard drive plugged in. Still on IDE configuration. I'm confused Windirstat says his partitions are not nearly full while windows explorer says it's about to be full.

Goodday Linus Tech Tips Community! I have a friend whose PC is stuck on the windows 7 logo and won't progress to desktop. When I put in my ssd in his PC I can get to desktop just fine; and then I connected his hard drive as a second/slave hard drive and it just blacks screen. When booting into safe mode it stops at classpnp.sys I tried a windows 7 repair disc and the startup repair seems like to run for 1 hour and still isn't finished so I cancelled the startup repair and then checked the log and it passed a lot of tests. His hard drive works and there aren't any loud clicking sounds from the hard drive. I think he needs to replace it but we're hoping we could at the very least get his files. PLEASE HELP.

Migrating Windows XP into Virtualbox
Sabinbp replied to Sabinbp's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
So I think the best way to do this would be to setup the virtual machine and just redo all the changes I made to the registry and transfer the files? In VirtualBox would I be able to dedicate a: hard drive (Sandisk Ultra Plus 60gb SSD I have laying around, enable trim once I dedicate it to the guest OS ) mouse and keyboard the serial port and be able to transfer files between the host OS and the guest OS? I'm going to dedicate a Core2Quad q9400 and the only motherboard I have laying around is a Foxconn G41MXE-K ( which sadly does not support VT-D )- 6 replies

Migrating Windows XP into Virtualbox

So I'll disable AHCI at the BIOS then I use Disk2vhd while the system is on? Can I use disk2vhd on a windows xp sp3 32-bit system? I have a system with windows 7 ultimate and I can't get the \Windows Virtual PC to install. The .msu package that I downloaded from microsoft just get's stuck at the "searching updates for this device" window and doesn't install the Windows Virtual PC. I'm trying to migrate the windows xp sp3 32-bit system into the virtual machine and because I'm going to use only windows 7 I thought maybe just use Windows Virtual PC which is made for windows only? In the event that I did install the Windows Virtual PC would I be able to dedicate a serial port ,monitor, hard drive, and a separate mouse and keyboard for the guest OS (Windows XP SP3 32-bit)?- 6 replies

NOOB HERE So I'm currently trying to migrate a windows xp sp3 drive into virtualbox. I've already done the running the MergeIDE utility althought I don't know if it worked. I think I'm at step 4.b. Do I need to run ubuntu from a flashdrive then install vmware then I type the command?

I don't know how to react to that but having just read some articles about virtualization I think I'm not going to need a new motherboard. I just have to read up about the windows virtual pc tool and get working. I downloaded the .msu package from microsoft but I just get stuck on the searching for updates window for minutes. Also tried to run it from the command prompt with administrator level still got stuck on the searching for updates window. Currently installing all the other updates that I haven't installed maybe it'll work by then. I'm just going to run a windows xp sp3 vhdx file. Allocate 2 cores from the q9400 and 2 gb of ram from the 4gb. maybe I'll add another 4gb of ram later to dedicate to the virtual machine. I have a Foxconn G41MXE lying around. It doesn't support VT-d but maybe I don't need VT-d for what I'm gonna do anyway?

Congratulations on reaching the 3 million subscriber milestone! If I would win I would like to have the NEW Razer blade 14 (great laptop but the naming scheme UGHH). Hell even if you guys would give away a pre-loved Razer blade I would still enter. I would use it for schoolwork which consists of making plans using Autodesk Autocad or Revit. Make 3d models in Sketchup. Photoshop renderings. Make presentations and documents. If I win I would especially GAME on it. I prefer the blade over the stealth due to the fact that it has a 1060 GPU. Thanks for the giveaway! Good luck to everyone!
