Chaftalie reacted to SenioRR in learning linux
A couple of months back, I was getting really annoyed by Windows. Whether it was the constant updates that took forever or general instability, I wanted to get away from Microsoft and switch over to Linux. The first days, just like you say, are intimidating but eventually Linux will feel like home and your Windows habits will disperse.
When I was getting started, and by no means am I an expert now, I watched pretty much all of Wendell's videos on Level1Tech and Level1Linux channels.
Here are two videos which I would recommend to anyone new to Linux:
Linux might be confusing right now, but you will eventually realize that it does many things better than Windows.
When you are having problems with something, there is a good chance someone out there did too.
There lots of answers and guides available to help you troubleshoot issues you might encounter.
Don't get discouraged when things go wrong!

Or just lay it on the PSU and tape over it, it's not very fancy but works.

iPad. If the Apple Pencil pushes you past your budget, the Logitech Crayon will be fine when you're just interested in taking notes; the Pencil's main advantages are for art.

If it was my Project, I would mount the HDD to the air flow holes ore drill new holes there. (maybe add some padding to minimise vibration)
Or doublesided Tape on the PSU ^^

Chaftalie got a reaction from Mad153 in High CPU usage on Steam Downloads
In this case most of the time its not as simple as just downloading, many games on steam are pretty heavy compressed, so you Steam decompresses the download stream while downloading, so installing the game is faster after downloading.
LTT Video where the download is capped by the CPU and not the connection:

Chaftalie got a reaction from StarTheSoldier in Is my SSD dead or can be revived?
Ho old is it and which model?
You could try to unplug you sata cable (let the power cable plugged in!) boot into the BIOS wait for half an hour to an hour,
reconnect your drive and try if it is running again.
You also could try to update the firmware of the SSD but I do not think thats possible in the state of the SSD right now.

Id just sell the old ram and get new ddr4. There is no ryzen system that will use ddr3. Ram has gotten a good amount cheaper recently aswell.

Chaftalie reacted to manikyath in Dual ethernet cable
there's a few things you can do with that:
- plug two cables into your network and rely on SMBv3 to get 2Gbps speeds to your NAS, if that also supports SMBv3
- plug into two seperate networks (for example, livestreamers often get two seperate internet plans, to divide streaming and gaming traffic)
- use one for your actual network, and use the other for, for example a direct link to another device
- etc..

Chaftalie reacted to Eastman51 in Does heatfin direction matter?
oh, ok; thats kind of what I figured.
Typically I would say mount with the fan facing front to back of the case, you would theoretically have better overall airflow if you did it this way. Though if you have the time and thermal paste, you can test both configs and see which yields better results

Chaftalie reacted to dfsdfgfkjsefoiqzemnd in Microsoft employees protest against Hololens military contract
Several Microsoft employees, including Hololens engineers, call on Microsoft to drop the military contract that the company won in November 2018.
They feel cheated by the company because they signed on to develop a tool for architects, car designers, surgeons, pianists etc, but are instead being seen as war profiteers because their work will be used to more easily kill people.
Source 1 : Business Insider
Source 2 : BBC News
The entire letter is posted in the Business Insider article. However seeing as it's an open letter, I feel that it's okay to post the letter in its entirety here.
The unfortunate reality is that someone WILL provide this kind of technology to the military. That being said, I'd be pretty pissed if I were in the developers' place too.
Imagine creating something that has the potential to improve the world, only to see it being used to kill people.
This could be seen as a follow-up on the topic that @AluminiumTech created here on December 4th.
EDIT : replaced the image with something smaller.

Chaftalie reacted to Brooksie359 in Microsoft employees protest against Hololens military contract
When you develop a technology for a company you should be fully aware that everything you do is the companies property and can be used how they see fit. That the reality of working in the research and development industry for a certain company. If you want to have a say in how a technology is used then develop it yourself with your own money. I'm sorry but these people are super naive seeing as Microsoft has had a good relationship with the us military for a long time. They were kidding themselves if they thought that this type if technology wouldn't get into the hand of the military.

Yes you can use the old key, the windows activation can be moved to the new build.
If you can't, call microsoft, they will reset the record in their database so you can use it in a new pc.

Chaftalie got a reaction from Hiya! in Is this surge protector enough for this PC?
10A at 230V are 2300 Watts,
thats more than enough for your setup.
You probably can connect up to 4 setups similar to this an be fine.
Also your power grid (there is surely another word for this but i cannot remember it, in German it is Stromnetz or Stromkreis or Sicherungskreis) has probably a B13(max 13 amps permanent) or B10(10A permanent) current surge.
no thats the amperage of the individual rails at 3.3V 5V and 12V.
your power supply has 550Watts that are 550W/230V = 2.4A
That means, your powersupply needs max 2.4A (That value is theoretical, if incounter efficiency it is not 100% correct, picture in the spoiler)
