I would love to see some actual comparisons in performance across iOS, android, Windows on desktop, etc. but due to the very different OSes and CPU architectures I'm not sure this has ever been achieved, which is a real problem because you can't claim performance vs something else unless you can actually test it.  Just using logic and basic physics though, it's hard to believe that the entire computational power of the phone could beat even a single core of a modern desktop PC.  I find it near impossible to believe that Apple could be so vastly far ahead in terms of efficiency compared to companies like Intel that they could do significantly more with a Watt than a desktop CPU, and therefore, power consumption would be somewhat correlated with performance, and therefore, no phone would stand a shred of a chance.  All just speculation and my own gut though... would love to get some actual numbers as I said.

NuclearKing reacted to D13H4RD in Why did the headphone jack cross the road? OnePlus says it's due to the in-display finger scanner
In what could be seen as an attempt to fan the flames of anger lit by their fans in response to their controversial decision to axe the headphone jack on the OnePlus 6T, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has come out with a statement during an interview on why they had to remove the headphone jack.
    Source: https://www.cnet.com/news/oneplus-ceo-6ts-in-screen-fingerprint-sensor-wins-over-missing-headphone-jack/?ftag=COS-05-10aaa0b&linkId=57630846

In regards to the OnePlus 6T, expect a bit of additional heft but don't expect wireless charging or official water-resistance certification.
    Source: https://www.gsmarena.com/oneplus_ceo_talks_about_how_the_indisplay_fp_reader_led_to_the_removal_of_the_jack-news-33559.php

    D13H4RD's opinion
Honestly, I call bullcrap. The earlier phones which incorporated these under-display fingerprint sensors had headphone jacks and didn't seem to have issues. Engineering is about overcoming challenges in order to meet the needs of whoever is going to use that product. Ever since OnePlus conducted that poll, it's clear that a significant portion of their customer base still uses the headphone jack. So it's still baffling in how instead of trying to engineer their way around that Oppo shell in order to get that jack inside, they instead decided to just "Screw it" and use it.

It's good then that the battery capacity is rumored to be around 3700mAh. Because according to Android Police managing editor David Ruddock, the Vivo V11 that he currently uses (which has a similar generation display sensor to the 6T), it still performs below par compared to traditional sensors, being significantly slower and significantly less accurate and being more prone to misfires. If those end up being the case, then no, it's not worth losing the headphone jack.

Nothing is worth losing the jack for, at least for now. Not when Samsung crammed a 4000mAh battery in a phone that also has to account for a silo that fits a stylus (which takes up significant space) while keeping the headphone jack.

I was referring to the bell curve in the context of merit. It’s certainly true that the compensation curve doesn’t follow merit directly. Supply and demand.

Speaking as an employer, high merit individuals are very appealing and worth paying much more for. As for low-mid merit individuals, they are basically worthless to me. I’d rather not hire at all and do it myself because some people outweigh their contributions through inefficiencies.

With that said, I’m speaking in purely business terms. Just because I wouldn’t hire someone doesn’t mean I believe they are somehow less human and undeserving of a reasonable and SAFE standard of living, the right to the pursuit of happiness, the right to be treated fairly, etc.

I’ve already publicly said I support* guaranteed basic income for all citizens as a way forward in what is going to be an increasingly automated world.

*though obviously it requires research/modeling and testing before such a system could reasonably be implemented.

It’s interesting to me to read this. I have done some research into Canada’s laws regarding labour unions, and it appears as though I am not allowed to provide any opposition to the discussion or forming a labour union and must “in good faith” negotiate with the labour union if it were to be formed.

With that said, I’ve always felt the best way to prevent a labour union from popping up is to maintain employee happiness anyway. I learned a lot from the Costco model while my wife worked as a manager there.

As for Trik’Stari’s post, there are definitely some problems you’ve identified, but short of a literal Robin Hood like... stealing rich peoples cars and distributing them in poor neighbourhoods, what is the solution here?

The only way to have a “distribution of the wealth” program is to have people run it - people who will ultimately corrupt the system and end up wasting that wealth - on themselves or something else... Sounds like a government.

As a business owner I would object to a program like this for fairly obvious reason. It’s just taxes. I already pay taxes. Lots of taxes.

So maybe we already tried this... any new ideas?

edit: The general conservative hatred of taxes - socialism, ewwwwww -  is quite baffling to me... All-told, from LMG I pay about 50% on gross profits in taxes by the time I spend a dollar.. and I can understand why the elites might not like that.. I just can’t figure out how they managed to convince the working class it’s a bad thing.. Where do they imagine roads and schools come from? Yes, there’s waste, but deregulation clearly isn’t the solution so...

I dunno. Some day I might enter politics. A lot of this shit is pretty self-explanatory to me...

NuclearKing reacted to LinusTech in How do populair youtubers react to fans wanting to say hi or get a signature?
Pretty much everyone I know is cool with it, but prefers when fans/viewers are respectful of their time/privacy. Remember, you don't actually know these people and even if you feel like you do, they don't know you, so you have to imagine how you'd feel about a total stranger approaching you in that situation when you're trying to figure out if it's ok to approach.

    Ideal:
Fan: Hey, love your work. Thanks!

    Also Fine:
Fan: Hey love your work. Can I get a selfie
*YTer is not in the middle of something or in a hurry*
    YTer: Sure, no problem.
*Fan has camera app already open and finger on shutter, doesn't act creepy or put arm around unless the YTer makes the first move*
    Fan: Thanks!
    YTer: No problem!
*fan leaves and doesn't linger awkwardly*

There are notable exceptions to this. When I'm "on shift" - like if I'm making an appearance for a sponsor or hosting a meet up, the only real rules are that you need to be respectful of other attendees who also want to come get their phone case signed or whatever.

It's all about what makes sense in the particular situation.

Some people don't really know better, unfortunately. The main problem is the misinformation he's spreading with this video. A lot of that is blatantly incorrect.

The I/O shield does nothing to help the board line up with the standoffs.
The PSU is in no danger of shorting out the case unless you have no PSU shell.
The board is not likely to crack from being screwed in place.
Stock thermal paste is plenty. You don't need any on top of that.
He also missed dual channel, which would be better and more aesthetically pleasing than the configuration he used. As pointed out by Science Studio, some boards won't even boot in that configuration.

And so forth, I could really go on and on pointing out the flaws.

I actually feel bad for this guy. Clearly he's unqualified to make this tutorial video but I have a feeling it's not his fault. The Verge probably had this video on their to do list, no one picked it up, and then they assigned this to some intern, who probably didn't ask for it, last minute because Capital One already paid for it. I have a feeling he probably googled a bunch of stuff and had no time to really research the topic. The fact that he used LOL to benchmark the PC indicates this, probably from a Google search for popular games, because if you look at the actual game play, he clearly does not play at all. I hope the guy in the video doesn't get too much grief. The Verge on the other hand should have known better.

It just doesn't make sense, the video as a whole doesn't make sense : how could they have gone through all this without asking an "expert" or at the very least, proof check the script? And none of that was flagged during editing or reviewing before it went live???

    What assumptions?

You said yourself that "When I dropped my Galaxy Ace I was the first person in NZ to do so, and had to be sent to Germany for 2 weeks." - AKA you were given the opportunity to have it fixed, you just had to send it to Germany. We were given NO opportunity to fix our device through traditional means.

It would be absolutely unheard of for a single post of "mY mAc BrOkE bEcAuSe I tOoK iT aPaRt PlS hAlP" to get hundreds of replies, let alone hundreds of credible replies from authorized repair persons. It's not an assumption to say that no average consumer would get the response that we did, it's a fact.

My only assumption was that you're implying that we made these videos just to "jump on the Apple hate bandwagon." Don't you think there would be many, many easier (and not to mention cheaper) ways to do that if that was actually our intention?

I guess we both know what will happen to this thread, but we'll have two different interpretations of what that actually is. My assumption is that you'll see it as Apple hate-mongering without any real backing, and I'll see it as a place for discussion about a topic that we addressed in a video.

I'd understand the negativity if we were pissed off about not getting a warranty repair on this computer or something, but come on... their behavior is about as anti-consumer as any electronics company is willing to get these days, and you're acting like we're trying to start a flamewar over nothing.
