Happy 10 year anniversary! This forum has been a huge help. I came here 6+ years ago not knowing anything about PC stuff and while I'm still not an expert, I know I can always count on the kind people on this forum.

    Mmm sketchy advice imo
Use afterburner then to do this

Yes.  These cards (and maybe most/all modern ones?) have three 'stages' if you will: normal clocks, boost clocks (automatic overclocking), and (manual) overclocking.  Mine is somewhere in that 2850-2950 range normally, I've yet to do any modifying as I don't see a need. [For some reason or another Furmark seems to get more out of my card's 'boost phase' than any other benchmark/game/app and I was seeing over 3GHz with boost clocks...haven't seen that high anywhere else though.]

I tested the other vBIOS that you can toggle to with the Quiet or Performance mode switch on the top of the card and unfortunately I was still getting this error. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I've added it to the growing list of troubleshooting steps I've tried.

I completely uninstalled armoury crate and that seems to have fixed the issue. No crashes since I uninstalled it. If for some reason it starts happening again, I will definitely try the other things you recommended. Thanks again for your help.

Without some info on what event viewer was showing no one has any idea what to look for?
just copy and paste the errors into a post so that people can then try to assist you.

Just guessing right now but try removing armoury crate and see if the issue persists ?

Thanks for your response. Should I be looking in system events or application events?

It looks like I got this error event in system:

The description for Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:
    \Device\Video3
    CMDre 0000004c 00003ffc ffffffff 00000007 ffffffff

HungryHamster reacted to Alex Atkin UK in Is darkmode more of a risk for image retention?
That's a tricky one, as it kinda depends how the dimming works and your own usage.

The idea of dark mode is to remember to minimise everything if you walk away and that the bit that burns in will be smaller so less obvious.  There's no perfect solution really.

I think another aspect is that in dark mode the panel wont be getting as hot, which reduces the chance of burn in as its literally the pixels getting so hot its degrading the organic compounds.  If the pixels nearby are off, the ones that are on wont get as hot.

HungryHamster reacted to ewitte in Why can't I cap framerate when using DLSS 3?
It is just a limitation of how they are generating a frame between two good ones.  I've seen people force it and get major artifacts.  My guess is it is dropping that last frame before getting a chance to do AI on it to get the middle frame (also giving you a higher % of fake frames).  The technology is new it will likely improve over time.

Sorry for the late response. I might try out DLSS 2, but I'd prefer to get the highest frame rate possible and then just cap it. Occasionally I will go over my monitor refresh rate as I mentioned which is annoying, but the main reason I want to cap it is just because I prefer as stable of a frame rate as possible. From the responses of others it sounds like this just isn't something that is working with DLSS 3 right now, although I did find it helpful to cap frame rate in Nvidia control panel which helps a lot in MS flight simulator (FPS swings from like 70 to 160).

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary it might be fun to change the theme back to that old theme for a day or so. The modern theme is 1000x better, but as long as it's not too much effort it might be a fun trip down memory lane, in the same vein as the April Fools day changing the font to Comic Sans. Could be completely off base for this, but figured it might be fun.

Anyway, congrats to the staff and everything for keeping this afloat for 10 years. It's a great place to hang out and figure stuff out.

EDIT: Just noticed the banner update with the ol' school logo. That's probably a happy medium for keeping the forum usable but actually usable unlike the old theme but still celebrating the anniversary. It was probably like that before I made this post and I just didn't notice.

The LTT Forum is now 10 years old! What started out as an experiment hosted in Linus's garage has now become a thriving community of tech enthusiasts, with some pretty impressive numbers, thanks in no small part to all of you!

The forum has come a long way from the incredibly unstable VBulletin 5 beta that we started out with in 2013, and I hope you will agree that it looks far better today than it did back then:

The forum exists because of its awesome community. As a small way of giving back, we're going to give away some 1 year Gold Contributor memberships, which give you Floatplane access, based on recent activity on the forum. The giveaway criteria are:
5 will be randomly assigned to the authors of posts made in the past 3 months (so your chance of winning is proportional to the number of posts you have made in the past 3 months), to give something back to everyone that makes this community awesome. Posts removed by a moderator, and posts in Test Posts, do not qualify. 10 will be randomly assigned to members who joined the forum in or before 2015 and have made at least one post on the forum in the past 3 months, to thank our most loyal members. 5 will be given to the members with the most posts that were marked as the best answer in the past 3 months, to say thanks to the members that give the most back to the community. Posts where a member marked their own post as best answer are excluded. Winners will be drawn later this week, and notified via PM by me. The full list of winners will be published here once all winners have accepted their prize.

All winners have now been contacted and received their prize

    Ts&Cs:
Max one prize per user If a winner already has a Gold Contributor subscription, they will get 1 year free starting from their next billing period Current moderators and administrators, and employees of LMG or its subsidiaries, are not eligible The giveaways will be drawn in the order listed. If an ineligible user is drawn (per points 1 and 3 above), an additional winner will be drawn. Winners will have 7 days from being notified via PM to accept the prize (by replying to the PM), otherwise their prize will be redrawn under the same rules. No cash value, non-transferrable, run at our own discretion, etc. Please don't get mad if you don't win. "Past 3 months" means between 00:00 on 01 October 2022 and 23:59 on 31 December 2022 inclusive, all UTC (so it's too late to try and game the system now). "In or before 2015" means the "Joined" field on the account is before 00:00 UTC on 01 January 2016.

Should be obvious. Because you want more fps and don't want to exceed display max refresh rate in doing so.

This limitation was reported at the launch of DLSS3 and I'm guessing it'll be on nvidia's list of things to improve with the tech. Hopefully it'll be in a better state when mainstream volume 40 series GPUs come out.

Framecapping won't necessarily fix tearing, but have you tried setting a global FPS limit in the Nvidia Control Panel? Then you don't have to rely on the games to have a FPS cap or a working one.

HungryHamster reacted to RONOTHAN## in Does DDR5 RAM's CAS Latency Really Matter for 4K Gaming?
CAS Latency is measured in clock cycles, so CL30 by itself means absolutely nothing. CL30 at 6000MT/s will end up with the same theoretical latency as say CL34 at 6800Mt/s or CL28 at 5600MT/s (though practically the 6800MT/s kit will have the lowest actual latency for reasons I'll get to later).

With DDR5 in particular, primary timings only matter if you plan on doing RAM overclocking. If you aren't, they can be pretty much ignored as they have such a minimal impact on actual RAM performance. What matters with DDR5 is the actual frequency, with the only timings that have a noticeable impact on performance being the sub timings (not the ones advertised).

That said, there's a problem with your plan. The sticks you're planning swapping to are 1Rx16 organized (it's the only way 8GB DDR5 can be made), which in general has 60% the memory bandwidth as the 1Rx8 organized stick you're currently using. Having 2 sticks with dual channel does double the memory bandwidth available, but the frequency and timing disadvantage of that new kit would mean that performance practically speaking will be near identical. This just isn't worth the time or effort to do. If you want to do a RAM upgrade, buy a second stick and upgrade to 32GB, that way you get a proper dual channel setup with proper 1Rx8 DIMMs which should be the best overall performance.

HungryHamster reacted to Biohazard777 in Where to get 4k (3840x2160) Wallpapers?
Yep, it was there and was replaced by that stupid "Large" "Medium" "Icon" filter...
I just hate how everything is getting dumbed-down...

Instead of fighting it and wasting time I've learned to embrace it, nowadays for wallpapers I just use
on Linux: "Picture of the Day - Provider: Unsplash",
on Windows 11:  Spotlight (which is built in).
    These change my wallpaper daily.
And on macOS I just keep whatever is the default wallpaper for current version as I spend the least amount of time using that OS.

Anyhow, if you want exact size on Google image search you have to include "imagesize:WIDTHxHEIGHT" in the query.
    For example:

Or in your case, something like: wallpaper imagesize:3840x2160

What I usually do is literally add "4K" in my search and then you can roughly filter the size by going to Tools > Size. That'll guide it in the right direction. As for what is shady and what isn't... well that's just the nature of the beast.

Somewhat counterintuitively, more fans can actually be quieter. 13 fans running at 1500 rpm will move more air and make less noise than 3 fans running at 2500 rpm.
