Depends on what kind of videos you want to record.  A kit lens is most typically an 18-55 variable aperture lens.  For a lot of situations it's good enough.  Of course, recording video is not all about the camera and lens.

    You need to invest in:
Good external microphones Lights and light modifiers Perhaps a tripod and a fluid head for smooth panning and tilting motion, or even a shoulder mount rig

Also not to be the barer of bad news but the t6i is fairly entry level.

Honestly I would avoid using DSLR mic inputs, when you can get a zoom h1 for cheap which sounds 100000x better

The DSLR has a big sensor but the GF3 still takes very nice footage

Either can be hacked ( i believe) to increase the bitrate and video options available

FlamingDefibs reacted to ALwin in Is it worth upgrading and switching from a D700 to an A7SII?
You can just replace the D700 body with the A7sII, get some lens mount adapters and all should be fine.  However even if the A7sII can go up to 400K ISO, you probably won't be going above 6400 that often.  Fireworks photography is more about shutter speed than ISO.  But the A7sII will let you record better video than... well the D700 doesn't record video all.

However, if you had issues using the A7s borrowed from your friend you may have issues with the A7sII.  My hands cramp up when I use my X-E2 all day, while I feel comfortable with my larger Nikon bodies.  Also I like that a larger DSLR body has more buttons than a MILC, so I don't have to enter the menu as often to change something.  This is something that I dislike with my Fuji X-E2, hence I never use it for professional purposes.

Another thing to consider is battery life, MILCs tend to have shorter battery life due to the EVF and greater reliance on the back LCD.  So you may need more battery changes in a single day if you're in the "field".

Both A7sII and D700 will be suitable for all the types of photography you do, of course the A7sII having a newer sensor will be an improvement in several areas.

Using a lens mount adapter will make most of your lenses all manual (aperture, zoom, focus, no in-the-lens image stabilization) unless you have compatible lenses.

What resale value can you get on the D700?  Try to avoid GAS syndrome if you can... I know it's not easy.

You just have to weigh out whether you think it's a reasonable investment to upgrade now or keep using the D700 until it dies.  If you sell the D700 body, you'll probably get $1000, and you will need to invest in an additional $2000 for the A7sII body, say about $50-100 on the lens adapter... about $2100 which you can use to buy perhaps some other accessories if you stick with the D700.

FlamingDefibs got a reaction from WinNut in rate my video
It's hilarious to me as to how many people are missing the point here. There are some things in the video that are genuinely funny, and the semi-amateur, handheld shooting (plus the cuts to dubstep) work well with how ridiculous the content is. What I adore about this thread is how people are looking at a silly video and thinking, "Well, the exposure isn't very good, and the colors look rather bad, so this is a solid 2.35/10 for me."

You want appropriate advice? Work on the general pacing of the video - something like this could have been about a minute in length instead, and the title screen isn't very necessary. Cutting could be timed better, too: some shots felt like they dragged on a bit (like the one from 0:29 to 0:40), and the time at which they are introduced is a bit off. Perhaps include an exposition shot of the firemen getting ready, to give the dive some context. That's mostly it, since the enjoyment here isn't about the quality, but rather the content - and it's actually decent content.

You can, however very narrow apertures like f/36 can affect image quality.  Better to use a 10-stop ND filter.

FlamingDefibs reacted to ALwin in What makes a photo and what makes a snapshot?
To me a photo doesn't have to be clean, crystal clear all the time.  It doesn't have to be taken with what most would consider "a proper photo camera".  If you're passionate about photography, it doesn't matter what kind of camera you have.

While modern digital cameras have come a long way, making it easier for people to buy cameras, take photos and share them on the web, I also feel that it makes people believe that all photos have to have this crisp sharp look that digital produces.  While certainly it is obvious that the person who took the photo above of an aurora may not have used a DSLR, I feel that it is not a snapshot.  Sure it may have been captured with a phone camera, that has bad low light noise performance, yet it certain shows a much better photo than many posted by others on that other thread.

And while certainly it isn't a photo that would currently appear on the cover or inside of a modern day National Geographic magazine, it certainly looks like something that would've appeared in NG decades ago in the days of old film.

Photography is not all about the effort put into it, sometimes people get very lucky and is able to create an instant hit with one single photo because they were lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time while someone else may lug around kilos of gear spend hours preparing and get crap.

Me? Yes I can be a photo snob and am arrogant enough to voice my dissatisfaction with what I would consider amateurish work. But I certainly don't like someone saying that another person's work is a "snapshot" when it is said without merit.

When I joined this forum I joined to ask for some computer hardware advice, but got pulled deep into this Photo/Video section when I saw some of the bad advice people were getting about buying a camera, misconceptions and shoddy knowledge that was being perpetuated.  I hope that in the few months since I joined I've managed to put a dent into that.

Now what kind of photos would I consider a snapshot?
a majority of selfies photos that are intent on capturing memories (birthday party photos, holiday photos)* many photos that do not convey a story or emotional response But honestly, there isn't a set rule that defines what is a photo and what is a snapshot.  You have to look at it in a case by case basis.

The second photo above, for example, I consider it a snapshot because though I know that some effort went into creating the image it feels more like someone trying out a new photographic technique on anything that was available nearby instead of actually looking for a proper location or vantage point to capture the image.  It feels like something a beginner, even I have done it several times, who just learned/read about a new style or technique and wants to test it out on anything that was available to see if it works.

*I often look back at the event photos I've been paid to capture and I despair at calling any of them photos.

Otherwise all of these would not be photos.

So what are your thoughts about the difference between a photo and a snapshot?  Try to look beyond the two example photos I've used above.

FlamingDefibs reacted to ALwin in Nikon D50 not taking pictures. :(
No clue, there can be many reasons why the camera may not work.
camera doesn't support newer memory cards (SDXC) shutter is not working properly, entry level cameras like the D50 have shutters rated for around 50,000 - 100,000 actuations dead circuit board inside who knows, unless it is actually diagnosed. r09 means that the camera's internal buffer is capable of storing 9 images before it must write the data onto the memory card

112 could be how many photos the camera has taken, are on the memory card, or how much space left on the memory card.

Cameras don't usually display error codes like computers when something goes wrong.  The only error code that I have seen on my various cameras is when I use an incompatible memory card that isn't supported.  And it just shows up as "err".

FlamingDefibs reacted to ALwin in Carbon fibre vs aluminium monopod?
I am familiar with this design of monopods, having the Manfrotto version, and the description on Amazon is not fully accurate.  For a monopod of this type the majority of the weight is in the foot and joint connectors.  There is only a small difference in weight between the aluminum and carbon version that whoever put up the description on Amazon may not have done so accurately.  Of course there is also the chance that the manufacturer may be using low quality carbon fibre so has to make the monopod sections thicker which adds more weight.

Looking at the images, this version seems to let you remove the triple feet and use a single rubber piece instead if you prefer.  However I can assure you that the triple feet will allow for smoother rotation if you want to do some panning motion with your camera.

But while I am familiar with the design, I cannot say anything about the build quality as I have zero experience with this brand.  I would read the reviews on Amazon and if any exists on other websites.

FlamingDefibs reacted to ALwin in Canon EOS Rebel T3i vs. Nikon D3300?
Both cameras should perform relatively similar for both photos and videos.  But the Canon has additional support (e.g. Magic Latern) that is preferred by video producers.

In other words (regardless of whether the camera is a DSLR or Mirrorless):
    Nikon & Fuji
Good for people who mainly want to take photos with simple options for recording video.  While the video recording capability and image quality can be very good, there are limits to what sort of control you have over internal settings and the types of codecs and bit rates used.

    Canon, Panasonic, Sony
Better choice for people who are more serious about using their photo camera for videos.  This is mainly due to the type of codec, third party support and other video recording features that are not usually found in Nikon or Fuji.

But regardless of which ever camera you choose, a good external mic is a must for video recording.

Additionally, look into buying a camcorder or a any other proper video camera if you want to record video.

If Amazon says their weights are the same, the carbon fiber one could possibly just be a carbon fiber casing or other type of falseness.
