  1. I do think the motherboard I have has hotswap capability. I'll have to check, I know it's a supermicro motherboard. Didn't know you could secure wipe disks using DD. I however like using DoD5220 that's for 7 passes. That's what I've been thinking. Just more so to keep down on clutter going with a universal charger; something that won't be getting used super often.
  2. So I’m going to be doing a multi topic thread here; in relation to the new hobby of intaking computers that people no longer want, refurbishing them then giving said computers to those that aren’t as fortunate or that have had some rough times. As part of the intake process, I’ll go through the computer itself for a functionality check to discover any potential problems. If everything is in working order I’ll go ahead and do a complete wipe of the HDD/SSD; unless the individual that given me a computer needs some data recovered off it. With that being said, I would like to put together a dedicated rig specifically for that task; I do have a server board that I was using for my PFSense box with an Intel Atom D330 in my parts bin with a dedicated USB port on it. Listed below are my possible requirements; since I’m going low budget and limited on space Ability to wipe multiple disks at once Recommended file recovery software Can be bootable through USB or PxE Open source preferred as I’m going full tilt using Linux Next topic is the next phase after function check and disk wipe is complete. This is where I’m contemplating on using setting up a PxE server to install operating systems. The primary Linux Distribution I use is Linux Mint with the Cinnamon DE, since I can’t afford to always buy Windows serial keys; Also gives me the opportunity to expose people to the realm of Linux. Side note, I always spend a few minutes with an individual/family showing them the basics of Linux Mint so they can familiarize easier. So far the maximum number of computers I can fit on the bench are 4 laptops or two desktops; provided I don’t have anything tore open. I already have a 5 port gigabit switch mounted off the side of my primary workbench. I do have a TrueNAS Scale Server in my network I can use to host a PxE Server; I am also open to use of a VM to host a PxE server. So any recommendations are welcome! Last thing…Any recommendations on universal laptop chargers? I want to get a couple for my computer bench for laptops I get in that don’t have chargers. Something that won’t break the back and will handle a wide variety of wattage capacity.

  4. Hello LTT Community. It's been a while since I last posted on here. So I'm on the quest to move away from Windows and Google for my daily tasks. I've already fulfilled moving away from Google Drive by switching to my self hosted Nextcloud. But I'd like to get some input on video editing software; I've currently been using Vegas Movie Studio Platimum that I purchase back in 2018. I primarily use Vegas Movie Studio to process my time lapse clips of sunsets and storms I take picture after picture; editing video I record either from my DSLRs (Nikon D3300 and D600) and my Go Pro Hero 5. One additional thing I'll be getting started on is getting old home videos recorded on Skull Abyss Phase One (my gaming PC) then processing them on my laptop which is a Dell Precision M6800 (yes I know it's old but works well and specs listed below). My requirement indefinitely is the software has to be fully open source; I know Davinci Resolve has a free edition; but has paywalls for additional features. Cuda or QuickSync would be a nice feature; but I could probably work without it for a while. Intel Core i7 4700MQ 32GB of Ram 128GB Dogfish mSata SSD 256GB Crucial MX300 275GB SSB 1TB WD Blue HDD Intel HD 4600/Nvidia Quadro K3100M Linux Mint 21.3 No Windows 10 on my laptop since I have't used Windows for about 3 months on my laptop since putting Linux Mint on.
  5. Hello LTT community. It's been a long time since I was present. I'm now calling for some help. I've been experiencing some random crashes on Skull Abyss Phase One; primarily when I'm not actively gaming. When I come back into my computer room; I come into the Windows 10 login screen. I know for a fact I haven't restarted my system at all. Down below are Skull Abyss Phase One's system specifications, I have also uploaded a copy of the most recent dump file I was able to get a hold of. I would definitely like to get this issue resolved. Graphics card driver in use right now is Adrenalin 23.7.2 072923-9671-01.dmp
  6. @Falconevo I do have some good news so far. What I did after making the jump to pFsense 2.4.3 is set a static IP mapping in my DHCP server settings. So far that seemed to help for the time being.
  7. @Falconevo It's not showing on Available Packages on PfSense 2.3.4
  8. @Falconevo So I tried the switcharoo with the ports on my pFSense box, same result. I know my serial cable will be in later today. I just need to get familiar with the commands for the switch
  9. I'll give it a shot. I also looked at the packages for PFSense and I'm not seeing Arpwatch. That might be something I'll have to install somehow. Not to familier with installing 3rd party stuff from outside of PFSense.
  10. @Falconevo, Haven't had anything like that happen yet on the PFSense side of things. One thing I haven't tried was switching the WAN and LAN ports around. Since the onboard nic on my box is an intel based.
  11. I have tried a couple of different ports on the switch. Same result. I've tried a couple of different cables as well. Same result.
  12. So I have a little bit of an oddball thing going on with the 24 port switch I recently bought. When I got done switching everything over from my TP-Link TL-SG1008D 8 Port Gigabit Switch over to my Dell Powerconnect 5324 24 Port Switch. (I did buy it used, unknown if it had a factory reset done on it or not), After the boot-up, everything was working fine for the first few minutes till my internet connection got knocked out. When I looked at the switch, only one set of the activity LED's were lit. So apparently the switch decided to restart itself. Few minutes later it did it again. It only seems to restart itself only when there is an active internet connection going into the switch from my router. Right now I'm currently waiting for my serial cable to come in so I can check the logs on the switch itself (since none of the stores I went too had the cable I needed). Here's a list of what I'm using on my network. Dell Dimension 3100 Running on PFSense Version 2.3.4 WAN Nic: fxp0@pci0:3:8:0: class=0x020000 card=0x01c41028 chip=0x10648086 rev=0x04 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = '82562ET/EZ/GT/GZ - PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller' class = network subclass = ethernet Lan Nic: re0@pci0:3:1:0: class=0x020000 card=0x816910ec chip=0x816910ec rev=0x10 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.' device = 'RTL8169 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller' class = network subclass = ethernet Dell Powerconnect 5324 24 Port Gigabit Switch Ubiquiti UniFi AP Dell XPS Gen 4 (Linux Server for file backup) Dell Precision T3400 (As my main server for my network) HP d220MT (Windows XP machine hardly on) Blu R1 HD (My Mom's phone) Dell Latitude E6410 (My primary laptop with the wire connection via docking station) My gaming rig Asus Zenfone Zoon (My phone) Acer Aspire E5-551-T374 (My mom's laptop) Acer Iconia W700-6495 (My Mom's windows tablet) Right now I'm trying to come up with a few theories to test out. Since I for a fact it's between my router and switch. Like I mentioned earlier, I am waiting for my serial cable to make it in sometime today.
