  1. Pretty much. The only ones who want brand loyalty is the brand themselves. Then they can sell crap to you for top dollars. Brand loyalty is indeed stupid. I've been guilty of this from time to time, but usually I get better. At least I hope so
  2. Yeah, I would be very impressed if they actually made TSMC 20 nm planar work on a big GPU. Phone SoC and such, sure, high performance big GPUs not so much. I do not believe that AMD will release a high performance card on TSMC 20 nm planar in February.
  3. It's very hard not to be very sceptical about this. Same rumour-mongers claimed that Nvidia Maxwell were supposed to be 20 nm. That should probably be enough for most people to discount this. Besides, making big powerful GPUs on TSMC 20 nm planar is very close to breaking the laws of physics. It would be amazing if it was true. I recommend the easy read by Josh Walrath, written last year: http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Editorial/Next-Gen-Graphics-and-Process-Migration-20-nm-and-Beyond Relevant quote: There have been nothing really that even hints at that the problems with high performance parts on TSMC 20 nm planar are even close to being solved. AMD was pretty clear last year when they released Hawaii on 28 nm, 20 nm planar does not work for high performance. If anyone has any solid info on this I'm all ears. Otherwise it seems pretty clear that both AMD and Nvidia are looking at ~16 nm FinFET process tech that TSMC, Samsung et al are working on.
  4. That would be my old Compaq Presario CQ56 laptop. I upgraded the CPU in it to a dual core Phenom 2 N660 3 GHz, and that made it very snappy. 8 GB RAM really helped as did the OCZ SSD. The screen is kinda terrible and the Radeon 4200 is not supported much. Linux runs like crap thanks to that video card, windows 8.1 is passable though. Battery life not good, but I have a stupid large battery that gives me more than just a couple of hours.
  5. I thought that guy looked familiar, and he mentions that he is Slicks older brother at one time. But yeah, introductions. Basic stuff ya know
  6. What about power consumption when overclocked? I would also like to see a comparison with X79 motherboards, X99 looks like the boards would be more efficient and have lower power consumption overall.
  7. They are using Kailh switches. Nothing new here. Edit: Google them. The switches are cheap chinese knockoffs (Kaihua Electronics). They have been around a while. Edit2: Anybody who reads geekhack? http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=55578.msg1248728#msg1248728
  8. My opinion is that RAM is cheap and that I hate when a computer uses swap, especially if it has one of those horribly slow mechanical hard-drives. I would get two fast 8 GB sticks I would also get a FM2+ board so I could upgrade to Kaveri down the line. If I can't afford two fast sticks, I would buy one and buy another when I can afford it, the beauty of PC is the possibility of upgrades down the line. Yeah and COD setting that silly limit on RAM was really telling, they are jelly. BF4 is a tru 64-bit game so it can use more than 4 GB RAM, I guess that is what the COD guys are trying to emulate and failing badly.
  9. Yeah, the latest 1.7 Minecraft is pretty heavy even om default settings. Turn everything up and everything short of a expensive gaming laptop will have problems. Low end systems really need Optifine, but there is no Optifine for 1.7 yet. Will probably be a while as the 1.7 update was pretty substantial. Will it run on a 3517U? Possibly, turn the video settings down, lock frame rates to 30 (maybe 60) etc.
  10. Think I saw a blog post about something similar: http://www.everydaylinuxuser.com/2013/10/12-great-linux-operating-systems-for.html
  11. Great minds think alike I find ordinary japanese commercials to be either amusing or a bit disturbing. Can't really put my finger on it though.
  12. o/~ I'm turning japanese, I think I'm turning japanese, I really think so o/~
