  2. I have a WRT 1900 AC and the performance over N is just fine for me. The main issue I have is the beast network infrastructure that my school has that causes a lot of interference for my router.
  3. I have a linksys WRT 1900 AC, it arrived about a week ago, I pre-ordered it. It is defiantly a boss. I don’t have any ac clients yet but I plan on replacing my current MacBook Pro this summer with a Retina model that has AC (not expecting an support on that decision but that’s ok). As far as the Linksys goes right now it preforms like any other $180-$230 AC router, the current firmware is nothing special. I did expect more when I first started it up but then remembered why I really bought it. I didn’t buy it for the Linksys firmware. I bought it for the specs and the fact that in a month to two I can flask it with OpenWRT or DD-WRT. For some one who wants a great AC router with plug and play ability there are many other options that cost less with possibly better firmware. This one does have better signal strength and if that really matters then go for it. I bought it for the possibilities that the hardware has with the open source community. I look forward to seeing what they can do when the source code is released at the end of the month.
  4. Having two laptops I have taken backing up my files very seriously. While at school this last year I have had two backup drives die in the same week. Recently I have built a low end desktop and loaded it with a copy of windows server 2008 R2. I would like to be able to store all my backups on the server. I have windows 8 and a Mac that I would like to be able to backup with. I have several terabytes of storage over 4 drives. Two are formatted as ntfs for the file history as part of windows 8 and two are formatted as ExFAT for the time machine backups from my MacBook pro. I have gotten to the part now where I need to set up the os on the server for my backups. I would like to be able to let the server sit on my desktop and boinc most of the day while it is on idle when I am not backing up files and OS and then be able to plug either one of my computers into a Ethernet cable and select the drives that I would like to backup to. I'm not necessarily interested in file encryption but I would certainly like the server require to a password to connect before I can access my files. Is there any other security problems I should worry about? I have never done this kind of work with a computer and I am wondering where I should start? How should I set up the os to allow such connections? Will this even work or will I need to run two os, one as windows server 2008 R2 and then linux or can I do this all with a server running just windows server?
  5. Hey guys, I'm looking to build my first gaming rig for crysis 3 and I figured I would do it right and find a list of parts that would be still be capable of games 3/4 years from now. This is the list I have put together for around 1300$ Any thoughts on compatibility or better parts? 6. I love this brand, bet quality I have ever found. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/
  7. I am studying compter engineering at Virginia Tech and our computer science department recommend that every computer science student has a Mac. This is partially due to the build quality, battery life and support, but also system stability. Terminal natively runs supports most languages. We use it quite often to run python code. It is a robust system that can run most any language I am a dual user and I have some classes that I need to use my Lenovo X220 tablet for with windows seven. These are mostly classes that need the expanded office suite and DyKnow. When comes to getting things done I always reach for my MacBook Pro. I feel that It supports multitasking better then any other system. The operating system footprint on my ssd is really small and OSX uses very little ram allowing me to run roughly 22 programs at a time without any slow down or need to use part of the ssd as swamp space (suing the ssd as "ram"). I struggle to find faults with it.
  8. I am a lont time user of apple iPhones. I have had an iPhone since 2011. My previous iPhone was the 4, i have never owned a 4s. My time with the iPhone 4 was interesting. I have been through 3 iPhone 4(s), my first iPhone 4 had the lock button fail, my second had the home button fail, and my third one was broken by my current girlfriend. I have had a much greater time with my iPhone 5. I did however almost not ending up purchasing it. I almost bought a windows 8 phone, a htc model, the user interface is awesome. I love most parts of my iPhone 5, here is the good and the bad: Good: 1. The screen is amazing, the colors are better then before and the size feels and looks so natural. 2. The Verizon 4G LTE where i live is fantastic. I am so happy with it. 3. The exterior is a piece of art. 4. The camera is even better then before. better lenses, better sensor, even the gimmicky panorama maker works amazing and I love it. 5. The selection of apps from the app store is fantastic. Some need to be updated to the larger screen but you hardly notice. 6. Front camera works great like the rear. 7. Call quality is fantastic. No drooped calls. 8. A nice refresh to the 4s. 9. Siri woks great and access online data bases besides whats already on the phone and it goes beyond phone calls and the weather. It even does complex math and if I remember right uses wolfram alpha to do derivatives. 10. Apple ecosystem, everything works with everything. 11. Unix based kernel for the OS. The Ok: 1. The OS, Some people love it and some don't. Its very reliable and now their is a solution to maps problem. (I thought it was time for the refresh and thats why I almost bought a windows phone. I may try and put Ubuntu mobile on it if it becomes available or buy an ubuntu mobile phone.) The Bad: 1. Contracts! I hate phone contracts! 2. "Scratchability" it scratches easily, mine even came with a baby one. 3. Glass trends to scratch more easily then the 4 or the 4s, but I still would recommend that this phone does fine without a screen protector. Its not idiot prof so it will break if you try to break it. If you put a case on it and don't drop it from any higher then 5 feet it will be fine. 4. The apple ecosystem, if you cant stand it. 5. Shorter battery life for me then my previous phones. Feel free to tell me why you would or wouldn't buy a iPhone. If you do have one tell why you love, like or hate it.
  9. Give Other World Computing a Look. http://eshop.macsales.com Long warranty life and driven from the server and work station world so you get speed and very long life. Fastest drives I've found for incompressible reads and rights that is not a PCIe drive.
  10. I have recently started to watch the older live stream videos on youtube. I am wondering how I can watch these live? What website do I go to? Do I need an account? I have a twitter but it was made for me and I have never used it before. Ho do I use my twitter account to interact with the show? When is the show and what time? I live in the eastern time Zone of the US. ie Ohio and Virginia. Anything else i need to know? I Have started "liking" all of Linus' videos, Go Charity!
  11. Well I have just invested in an iPhone five, if you can jailbreak an iPhone I don't see why it would be any harder to completely replace the os in the future. Maybe one to come in the future.... hope so!
  12. I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro and a lenovo X230 with windows 7. I do enjoy using my Mac more then my windows pc and I like the unix underneath the surface of OS X. I have an install disk for Ubuntu 12.10 and I can boot off of it. However I have an external drive that I am using as a back up and I have partitioned some space on it for Ubuntu. What kind of file system and boot registry should I create on that external drive so I can instal and boot into Ubuntu from that external drive? Also the Ubuntu reads my external drive with the two partitions as a Raid array even though it is not a RAID array. It is just a back up drive with some empty space i have put into another partition for Ubuntu.
