I built my computer in September 2016 and bought 32GB of Ripjaws V DDR4/2133MHz for $124.99 and now it's running $300-$380. Glad that I bought when I did!

In the picture its very clear the trays have a quick release system, if you ask me OP is trying to screw something in that just shouldn't be screwed in at all. It would defeat the purpose of quick release if you had to remove the entire cage to unscrew the tray so you could then use the quick release system.

Also on second glance it appears the hole you're trying to screw into is there so 2.5" SSDs will fit in the same tray as a 3.5" drive. The reason he can't get anything to fit is because there's no thread behind the hole for the screw to grip to.

Errr no, Aeroplane ENGINEERS will know which screws fit what for their specific part of the plane but suggesting that any one person would know every single screw on an Aeroplane is worse than trying to screw in a quick release hard drive tray. Besides that why would an Aeroplane manufacturer have a customer support department?

Wrong, it makes a cool looking paperweight. But in all seriousness, I think your right, It gets outperformed by other xeons in single core and by gpus in multicore, I can't think of why someone wouldn't just buy a gpu instead.

Dude exactly! or I try to tell them to buy a cheap laptop if they want to game, because they heat up easy and just build a PC with the money you would save from buying a gaming laptop.

Supply is low and demand is high. I got my 32gb kit for 200 dollars early 2016 and now same kit is around 320 dollars.

ISS IT Guy reacted to Lathlaer in What does "Future Proof" mean to you?
Ensuring that components bought today will have a desired, projected efficiency in few years of time.

As in, if I buy stuff now to play every game on ultra, which components can I keep to do so in about 3-4 years. Like I said, since GPU tend to have biggest growth, it's extremely hard - or just impossible - to not replace them every few years.

Example: let's say I am an enthusiast gamer who does other stuff on the side and I want to future proof my PC. My setup is i7 6950X, Rampage V Ed. 10, 1080ti in SLI and a 1440p G-sync monitor. Overkill? Maybe. But this system ensures that I play every game I wish on ultra, utilising my monitor's 144hz refresh rate to the maximum.

If I can do the same or close to the same in 3 years of time by just replacing GPU's, then I consider the rest of my PC future proofed.

Therefore, future proofing isn't something objective - it all relies on the expected performance in the future and the nature of the task I want to do with my PC. Also, again, it does not hold truth for every component the same - therefore saying that the whole PC is future proofed is a kind of mental shortcut.

It's not like my monitor at 144hz is garbage because someone made a 160hz one. If my projected desired future is to play games on that monitor, have a smooth experience on ultra, then I consider my PC future-proofed (or parts of it). It's not like my m.2 SSD will be garbage because a new faster one will be released - according to majority of even this forum it won't matter, judging by the number of people claiming that SATA is still fine and m.2 is overkill and unnoticeable. If m.2 is undistinguishable from SATA for a regular user, why should I care if a faster m.2 appeared?

If I buy a 1200W PSU, it will keep my system well powered for a forseeable future and will be high enough quality that people will think I am out of my mind if I try to replace it after 2 years of usage. Again, there are topics where people specifically ask how often one should replace PSU, I have yet to see an answer suggesting something shorter than a 5 year period.

So yea, if you narrow down the definition of future proofing to the point where whenever anything newer appears, it invalidates the concept, then sure - no such thing as future proofing.

But if you broaden the definition and try to apply some real life common sense (like not exchanging a perfectly good m.2 because something 5-10% faster appeared, not exchanging the PSU because something marginally more efficient appeared etc., not exchanging DDR 3600Mhz RAM because someone made 4200Mhz), then I claim that almost any component can be future proofed given specific expectations and reasonable amount of time (so yea, not like 15 years). Almost. Those pesky GPUs are still the hardest imho.

I think my old 550ti would be kind of future proof with how good devs are getting with optimization

Obviously you interpret future proofing as in "if I buy X, nothing better will ever be released" so that kind of discussion is moot.
