    Guided Walkthrough | Build Log

    Specs:
    CPU: Intel i5 2500k @ 4.5GHz
Motherboard: MSI Z68MA-G45 (MicroATX, socket 1155)
    RAM: 16GB (4x4GB) assorted DDR3 1600
    CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L12
    GPU: Zotac GTX 970 4GB
    Storage:

    WD Red 3TB [2014] (storage)
Power Supply: Antec HCG 620M (semi-modular)

So yeah. This is my first build log, but certainly not my first build. I encountered MANY issues I really could not have planned for during the entire progress of this build, which I've written about in the "Build Log" link above. Check it out and tell me what you think!

    Some facts:
Time Taken: A week and a half waiting on all packages, around four hours to get to a POST state, and another four hours to tweak.
    Required Costs: $30 (just case)
Actual Costs: Around $600 to get everything together (case, GPU, HDD, cooler, bay adapter, cables)

Yeah, I'm thinking the colors should match nicely as well.

The whole project has been really fluid.  Originally I was going to do some 'antiquing' on the inside, but I ended up really liking the paint job so I just ran with it as-is.  The design of the building too went through several iterations.  Here are the first sketches I put together.  Overall I don't mind a clean, tight looking inside in the end.

No need to do that, if you take something like a precision flat head screwdriver, you will be able to get the fan connector off, sleeve the cable, then put the fan connector back on. No need for cutting.

Push down just enough were the cable will come out.

Hello everyone, this is my first build log as well as my very first custom built PC. I decided to take on the challenge of making it a Batman themed build and I have to say that I had a blast working on it.

I bought all the parts during Black Friday and Cyber Monday back in November 2013. I have been working on the rig since then and I finally managed to fully finish it.

So let's start with the the specs:
    http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2ggKc
    CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K
    Cooler: Corsair H100i
    Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme 6
    RAM: Kingston HyperX Black 2x8GB
    GPU: EVGA GTX 770 ACX
    SSD: Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB
    HDD: Seagate 3TB
    PSU: Corsair RM750 80+ Gold
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 w/ window

Extras (For a temperature controlled RGB LED Strip):
    Arduino Uno R3
5m RGB LED Strip (~4m used)
One Wire Digital Temperature Sensor - DS18B20
    MOSFET Transistor N-Channel 60V/16A STP16NF06 DE3268

    Received all the parts!!

Did a test build. At first, I pressed the power button and nothing happened - my heart sunk. Pressed it again and still nothing. Then I realized my noob mistake: I didn't plug in the 24-pin power connector. Plugged it in and phew...it turned on.

    Motherboard and CPU are in.

    All parts in and wired.

Now time for some cable management.

    Wire management done.

    She's alive! Installing Windows 8.

    Aluminium Batman Logo:
Now it's time to create an aluminium Batman logo! I made this sketch in SolidWorks using an image as a reference in the background.

I decided to get it cut with a CNC machine, which I have access to at my university. Someone helped me transfer the SolidWorks drawing to MasterCam, which calculates the path that the CNC takes to cut the metal.

For the Batman silhouette, I didn't use SolidWorks as it would have been really tedious trying to dimension it. I opted for creating a paper template and hand-cutting it with a dremel.

It was really hard to cut but I did it. Took me about an hour to cut and 4 hours to refine.

I refined both the Batman logo and the silhouette by filing and sanding.

Time for a brushed aluminium finish!

    First pass on the silhouette

I think it turned out pretty nice.

To attach the logo and the silhouette, I used Uglu (amazing stuff). It holds them on the case very strongly and I don't think I ever have to worry about the aluminium falling off.

    RGB LED Strip:

Then I moved on to creating the temperature controlled RGB LED strip. I cut the 5m LED strip to size and put it around the side perimeter of the case. For making the circuit, I followed this tutorial: http://www.jerome-bernard.com/blog/2013/01/12/rgb-led-strip-controlled-by-an-arduino/

To power the LED strip and the arduino, I used the 12V and 5V supply from the PSU molex connector. I haven't had any issues with the LED flickering or pulling too much current. And the arduino still works after about 3 months of use. Eventually, I would like to take the arduino out and just use the Atmega 328 chip to run the circuit.

Testing the strip with the old PSU

Without further ado, here's the final product:

    Next steps:

I would like to some day finish the GPU backplate I started working on. I measured everything on the GTX 770 and even created the SolidWorks model for it but never really got around to finishing it. I'll be sure to post back if I ever finish it.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this build log. I sure had a lot of fun building "Dark Vengeance" and I learned so much.

Some people might be asking why make a pop filter when there cheap to buy? Well this method can be used if you want to wash your pop filter from time to time or even replace with a new one if you get a snag or a rip.

    Welcome!
I thought I would share a project I have been working on for a few years! Some of you may have seen it on other forums or somewhere else but now I have started the work log here as well. It is a fully custom chassis built and designed by me.

I have been a long time watcher of LinusTechTips on youtube but I never realized that this forum was here. Because of that I never got around to make a work log here for the whole progress only the last month or so of the build. Anyway I hope you will enjoy it! (Updated the pictures to the final ones and added videos!)

    History behind the Project:
About 5 years ago I decided that I was going to water cool my computer. Back then I had a Antec P180, not exactly the perfect chassis for water cooling your components. I looked at a lot of different chassis but I was never really happy with any of them. So I started sketching on my own design. First they were really awful, but as time progressed I got better and better at drawing. Early drawings was in MS-paint. I then moved on to Google Sketchup and finally Autodesk Inventor. I have probably gone through about 30 different designs until I finally decided on this one. This was my first custom designed chassis and also my first ever water cooled computer! The basic goal was to design a very quiet high-performing system with a minimalistic and clean design.

Edit: Compiled all the Pictures and Videos in the first post.

So I did this awhile ago, but someone recommended that I post it here. Well my first build was last November. I recently moved into a new home and inherited a massive TV. I converted my GF back to PC gaming, so I turned my original build into the HTPC/Living Room gaming machine. So I went with a new build based on Haswell. I kept my Sapphire 7970 for this build and was about to get another. But I've been reading about how the micro-stutter is terrible with Eyefinity and the new drivers don't fix it. I am probably going to wait for Maxwell. I wanted to also try entry level water cooling and make a themed build. I went with a black and white color scheme to match the case with blue accent lights. Yes, I know the power supply is way overkill. I bought it awhile ago, not really doing much research, but it was a steal.  I'm running an EX280 radiator with the stock 140mm fans in push with the 200mm fans in pull. That took a little modding and bending to fit, but I think it is well worth it. Also, I managed a stable overclock at 4.7GHz with 1.258V. I was reaching a max of 85 degrees Celsius under Prime95. Oddly, a higher Vcore led to instability at 47x and it kept crashing in windows at 48x. This is the first time I've seriously tried my hand at overclocking. I spent a lot of time and meticulous work to do this and am very proud.

Since building I have gotten individual arms for each monitor and am really enjoying them. The Monitors are the Dell 2321HM IPS. Sorry for the crappy phone pic at the end. I will soon be adding a 4TB Barracuda drive and another 8GB of RAM, and hopefully I can sell my 7970 for a high price and pick up a 780 Ti or wait for Maxwell.

    Thanks for looking!
