Not to be a nit pick, but don't you think that is pushing it just a bit? Computers are advanced these days but taking over the mind? I don't think so. The interaction will be a one way thing. To get to what you speak to will take medical knowledge to point decades beyond what we have to even start with.

So they're basically allowing someone's mind to be taken over by implanting an interface into their brain?

I know I'm just going against the inevitable, but I think we shouldn't develop this kind of technology. Enabling human brains to be connected to a network is a huge security risk. Hackers will be able to take over your mind and you won't be able to do anything once it happens.

AMD has unveiled 2 brand new Polaris GPUs. The first is the sucessor to the R9 Fury X, it is called Polaris 11. It uses 14nm Samsung/Global Foundries 14nm LPP FinFET.
The other is called Polaris 10 and is the size of Cape Verde (Same size as R7 250X but much more powerful).

Personally this is really cool. But it leaves me with a few questions unanswered. Does this mean all other GPUs will be rebranded 300 series? I hope not but they can't really do 2 new GPUs and fill a new lineup (unless they plan on releasing a small amount of GPUs)

Once you figure in expenses, it doesn't really sound like that much to be honest. I mean, I assume he can make a living off of it or else he wouldn't be doing it, but it doesn't look like he's getting rich. My dad is self-employed and I did his books for a while, expenses are far more brutal than people often think. And not just the regular stuff, sometimes shit happens and you need to drop a lot of money at once which you hadn't planned to spend, so you not only need to cover ongoing expenses, but also have something on the side for those situations or else you might be out of business (example: my dad needs his car for work, so if that breaks down permanently, he needs to be able to purchase a new one, and quickly).

I'm pretty sure PhysX would run well on AMD cards though if NVIDIA wanted it to. I don't know about other people, but if I had a company, I would be trying to set open standards for other companies to use - maybe it's cause I care about the industry and competition. NVIDIA likes to be super closed.

    Personal Opinion
Excellent. A backdoor in an encryption method makes encryption pointless. Strong encryption with no flaws is needed to protect citizens' personal information to prevent fraud and other crimes; whistleblowers are also better protected. Hopefully the governments of other countries that are trying to force backdoors into any encryption will realise that it's the worst way of going about protecting their citizens.

    ---

this is one move from AMD that I applaud
in contrast, Intel went with a whole bunch of sockets that frankly can hinder future upgrades

what I also like is that AMD will deliver simple CPUs, without integrated graphics, alongside APUs
this is another caveat I have with Intel's CPU lineup - paying more for something I do not want is not acceptable
maybe some games under DX12 will find a use for IGPs, but I don't see developers actually investing in this - there are a few aspects on rendering where the IGP can handle the GUI, for example, where the main video card will handle everything else

I don't know why everyone is hating on it so much, it's not a Tesla and it's not trying to be. It's a decently priced fully electric car with many new features not yet seen at that price point. If the space, range, and acceleration are correct, this would make for a very useful second family car. I honestly think it's a decent step towards electric cars going mainstream.

Khraft reacted to LAwLz in Ultra HD Alliance Announces New Specification - Ultra HD Premium
It's about damn time that monitors and TVs caught up with my Chinese cartoons in terms of technology. Today the UHD Alliance (UHDA) announced a new standard called "Ultra HD Premium".
What is Ultra HD Premium and how does it differ from your UHD TV you just bought? Well, here are the requirements.

    Requirements:

What does this mean? It means that an UHD Premium display will need to support a much wider color space, it must support 10 bit colors (reduces banding), it must have UHD resolution and they must have good contrast.

    Sources:
    Ars Technica
    Business Wire

Does this sound familiar to someone? It should if you have been following AMD news recently, because they talked about supporting these things last month. You can read more about what AMD had to say about their GPUs and BT.2020 over at Anandtech. It is well worth the read.

Are you excited that we will finally replace an ~80 year old monitor standard with something more modern, designed for the types of panels used today?
Windows does currently not support HDR but Microsoft are working on it. Both hardware and software got quite a long way to go before we will see widespread adoption, but this is an important first step towards a much better looking future.

I can see multiple legitimate uses for this. What if I want to use my blu-ray on an old crt? Do I have to buy a separate copy of the movie? And don't tell me I shouldn't buy a 4k bluray for a crt, because I might have a 4k screen and need to play it on a crt somewhere else. Even a modern screen won't play a blu ray if it has a vga or composite cable, and I may not want to buy a new cable specifically for watching a movie I bought.

What about backing up your movie, so if the disc dies you don't have to drop another 30 bucks on a movie you already own? What about having a digital copy that you can carry with you in a hard drive instead of needing to bring a reader and a disc around with you everywhere? What if you want to add subtitles to it?

Maybe this does break the DMCA, but the fact stands that the DMCA and HDCP are complete and utter bullshit. There are plenty of ways a pirate can rip a blu ray through software, no need of custom hardware or anything. Hell, I can rip one of my blu rays for the legitimate uses I listed above in less than 20 minutes through a wonderful piece of software called anydvd hd by slysoft. They even sell a dedicated bd ripper and cloner. If I wanted to upload one of those backups it would take me no time. All the DMCA does is provide a worse experience for those who paid for the movie compared to pirates.
