  1. Hi! I'm having this really weird issue in Windows, where Windows Explorer reports wildly inaccurate file count and folder size. In the attached image, the left properties panel is of the containing folder "_bak_MacWindows" (backup folder of my old Bootcamp install), the middle one is from selecting all the files in that folder, while the right one is of the same folder after being copied onto my NAS. Out of these three, the right one seems to be the most accurate, but I'm worried what has happened for Windows Explorer to be so far of in it's counting? Only thing I've found online is a possible hardware error in a failing harddrive, I'm just hoping it's not, as it would be the third one to die on me in a year, and the third total in my 10+ years of working with computers... I have run a compare on the drive and my NAS-backup, and WinMerge can't find any differences, and Windows Explorer doesn't report anything of out the ordinary with any other folder I've checked on the drive... Any ideas on the issue? And, possible any suggestions for an easy (windows*) utility to reliably check a harddrives health? Thanks in advance for any suggestions! * Windows, meaning an application or utility I can run within Windows not requiring me to move the drive to a Linux machine... I'll also take suggestions for Linux utilities, just easier if there's a good Windows one ^.^
  2. Hi, I've been working towards setting up a new storage server replacing the one I'm running now. I currently have it just running Windows 7 with 2 x 3TB WD Red drives in RAID 1 (within Windows). Most of my other servers are running Debian or other Linux-distros, but I set up this server with Windows due to my current cloud backup provider, Backblaze, only working in Windows and OS X. I am running a NextCloud server on a seperate Debian-VM connecting to the storage-server via a Samba-Share. I now want to set up my new server with the storage and NextCloud on the same machine, and preferably running backup against a cloud-provider. I have been planning to move to Crashplan, as they seem to have the right service, but as they just announced their discontinuation of their Home-tier, I'm not sure about that anymore. As you might guess from my Crashplan consideration, I want to move away from Windows. I have been looking into both FreeNAS and unRAID, but as FreeNAS seem to have higher hardware requirements, and are harder to operate, and I also don't know if I can run NextCloud from it. unRAID seems to be inviting, but as a lot of people seem to dislike their "btrfs" filesystem, and a lot of comments warning about data rot, I'm not really sure. As far as I know unRAID is the better solution for running extra services in addition to just storage, is this impression correct? Also, is there other option you would recommend? Short summary of what I want to achieve: - Storage server with 2-4 x 3TB drives running with redundancy (RAID 1, 10 or 5) - Running NextCloud - Cloud backup (Crashplan, Backblaze or similar) PS: How are the different solutions when it comes to adding additional drives in the future? PPS: If it's possible I would like to be able to add a Plex-service to the server later, but that's something I could run on my VM-host, so no biggy. Thanks in advance -- Dentsor
  3. First of all, I'd like to congratulate you on 3 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS! I've been following the show for as long as I can remember. Even though this is the first time posting on your forum. So, I thought I'd share how I got to know this channel. It's actually quite simple: A friend showed me this epic guy called Linus unboxing stuff back when I went to school. He was extremely into everything Linus were reviewing, while I just didn't have time, and I dind't find the unboxing to be that interesting. However, after a year or two, I began watching more regularly and now I've been watching almost every video for the last couple of years. My favorites are the bigger crazy projects like whole room watercooling and the moving vlogs. Among more normal videos I'm very fascinated by small, customizable computers, so the "Full tower in a shoe-box" videos and the Fallout 4 buildlogs are videos I've watched more times than I'd like to admit. Specifically the Fallout 4 videos inspired me to create my own project with some friends, where we try to create a cylindrical computercase with a Mini-ITX and otherwise full-tower components. So to summarize, I'd like to thank you for the videos, and the inspiration that follows. To answer the question in this giveaway: I like the Razer Blade Stealth. I have started traveling the city a lot more, trying to not just sit at home. Recently a new bar opened where I live, focused on gaming, development and nerd/geek-culture. They have the bar with tables to work and/or hang out, they have Shuffleboards and Playstations and a ton of boardgames. In the back room they have a hackerspace, with 3D-printers and workspace to create everything from small figures to largs (1-2 meters?) robots. As a computer programmer, what I would want to do is have a portable laptop, like the Blade Stealth, which I could take with me and work on in city-centre, with friends and others, withouth compromising performance! In case I need it in the future, I could even connect it to a Razer Core, and get the full performance out of it. Even though the Blade (14) are "better for work" due to the larger screen and keyboard, I've recently decided that a 12" display is enough for me, and that portability makes a bigger difference to me. I borrowed a 12", and later a 14" Lenovo, and decided that the 12" fit me perfectly, while the 14" was simply to big and heavy. And if were to work at home, I could just connect it to a separate screen anyway So anyway, that's how I got into LinusTechTips, and how and why I'd like the Blade Stealth. It's not that I think a Blade (14) is bad, I just prefer portability Btw: I also love your never channels (Techquickie and ChannelSuperFun), and LinusCatTips will always have a special place as a funny "spinoff" TL;DR I prefer the Blade Stealth, due to portability Thanks for your awesome work, please keep it up! -- DENTSOR - Known for walls of text
