back in the day when pc ment you could enjoy games like doom , duke nukem , and later quake and unreal tournament , that was a hugh deal , these days its just some better grafics , the gameplays still the same. only when a console is holding back game design is when it becomes a real problem , crysis 3 at 4K at ultra or 720P on medium is still the same game.

its way easyer to port a game to xbox 360 than it is ps3 , so it kind of makes sence if it will save them money just to bring it out on pc ps4 xbox one and 360

in the tech world , buy what you need today , not what you think you'll need in the future, that's the best advise anyone can give.  windows 8 will still be there in 14 months time if it is needed for direct X 12 to be fully used, you can buy it then.

I ask this, because at one point I asked about upgrading my CPU, and was told I was ridiculous for considering doing so (I have an 8320 currently), because I was told that games are going to use TONS of cores in the futures, and I'll only see a loss of performance... But if more cores are being used, then hyperthreading will cover the extra cores very similarly to the 8 core processors, right? (Note: I'm looking at a 6 core i7)

178sonic sums it up pretty well , windows 8 is a good OS, but theres no real reson to pay to upgrade to it if your on windows 7. Theres a learning curve and for a desktop user , that learning curve isn't worth it. Windows 7 has the best all round driver and software support, and will do for some time to come due to its market share.

I guess I can put in my 2 cents

I personally prefer windows 7 due to the fact that I follow 2 motto's, "If it ain't broken, don't change it" and "If it ain't broken, don't change it but you can still make it better" -Marques Brownlee.
With windows 7, everything just "works". Ever since I have gotten into computers windows 7 has been by far the greatest operating software out there because of its simplicity and functionality (other than windows 95 ). With windows 8 they kind of threw a curve ball at the way things are done while still trying to maintain simplistic. The thing is, everything is tied into one thing (at lease in my experience)... the metro interface. Because the metro interface is tied into many of the features that runs windows 8 almost everything has to be done in a slightly different curve pattern (either it be from adding an extra step to getting a specific page or having to do things completely different). One big thing that is noticeable is the lack of driver support from many companies, now I'm not saying that there aren't drivers for windows 8 it's the fact that many of those drivers are either faulty or just plane don't work. Now It's not to say that windows 7 doesn't have its quirks but with windows 7 it seems that it has much greater support than windows 8 does and this goes back to the beginning of windows 7's creation where almost everything would run on windows 7.

Overall windows 8 is a good platform and will be interesting what Microsoft does with it in the future but as of now it feels to me that window 8 has too big of a learning curve for many of the consumers out there wanting to upgrade whether it be for their own gain or for business use. But that is not to say that I have lost hope in windows 8.

I agree with you , Its an impressive machine , currently you would struggle to build better for less budget. but as you say how many people need those exact specs. What I dont get is , apart from apple enthusiasts , who wants to buy this machine? , what company's even care what a system looks like , there buying it to make them money.

But the biggest problem with apple computers for professional use is everything about apple is a big secret , when intel/amd/nvida announce new hardware , you can pretty much pick it up from the shop next day - to a month , with apple who knows , there old mac pro line was way behind the curve , businesses cant sit and wait for the next systems from apple to come out when they need that power today.

just go for the I5 , its a CPU thats good at everything , old games , new games , rendering , streaming it does it all. theres some benchmarks that will show other cpu's ahead at specific tasks , but the I5 is such a good all rounder i dont see the point in going with anything else unless you have a specific requirement.

In most games it will be your gpu thats ultimately your bottleneck though.

in pretty much all games this is true , with the acception of world of warcraft a game that i play , an i5 utterly destroys amd cpus due to that game engine being so god damn old. but thats a very specific case.

people dont want to get used to it becuse theres zero reson to on a desktop , and people have spoken with there wallets. windows 8 is a good OS with a poorly designed UI for desktop users no matter how people on this forums spin it. There is zero reson for microsoft not to have included the option to use the classic start menu on windows 8, bloody OSX has more customization than windows 8 had when it launched! , there slowly being patched in.
