pastafingers reacted to colonel_mortis in 10 Years of the LTT Forum
The LTT Forum is now 10 years old! What started out as an experiment hosted in Linus's garage has now become a thriving community of tech enthusiasts, with some pretty impressive numbers, thanks in no small part to all of you!
The forum has come a long way from the incredibly unstable VBulletin 5 beta that we started out with in 2013, and I hope you will agree that it looks far better today than it did back then:
The forum exists because of its awesome community. As a small way of giving back, we're going to give away some 1 year Gold Contributor memberships, which give you Floatplane access, based on recent activity on the forum. The giveaway criteria are:
5 will be randomly assigned to the authors of posts made in the past 3 months (so your chance of winning is proportional to the number of posts you have made in the past 3 months), to give something back to everyone that makes this community awesome. Posts removed by a moderator, and posts in Test Posts, do not qualify. 10 will be randomly assigned to members who joined the forum in or before 2015 and have made at least one post on the forum in the past 3 months, to thank our most loyal members. 5 will be given to the members with the most posts that were marked as the best answer in the past 3 months, to say thanks to the members that give the most back to the community. Posts where a member marked their own post as best answer are excluded. Winners will be drawn later this week, and notified via PM by me. The full list of winners will be published here once all winners have accepted their prize.
All winners have now been contacted and received their prize
Ts&Cs:
Max one prize per user If a winner already has a Gold Contributor subscription, they will get 1 year free starting from their next billing period Current moderators and administrators, and employees of LMG or its subsidiaries, are not eligible The giveaways will be drawn in the order listed. If an ineligible user is drawn (per points 1 and 3 above), an additional winner will be drawn. Winners will have 7 days from being notified via PM to accept the prize (by replying to the PM), otherwise their prize will be redrawn under the same rules. No cash value, non-transferrable, run at our own discretion, etc. Please don't get mad if you don't win. "Past 3 months" means between 00:00 on 01 October 2022 and 23:59 on 31 December 2022 inclusive, all UTC (so it's too late to try and game the system now). "In or before 2015" means the "Joined" field on the account is before 00:00 UTC on 01 January 2016. -
pastafingers got a reaction from Roll_Like_Rollo in Experiences with non-techies
My godfather's PC was slow and yesterday morning he called me and asked if I could reinstall Windows on his machine, I said I will come around 3pm. I came to my godparents house and my cousin said that godfather took the pc and it's now in a repair shop. And I'm like "wut?".
Long story short: my godfather decided that it's a RAM issue so he wanted more ram and put DDR400 sticks in a DDR2 board. Now he needs a new motherboard. He's a non-techie

I'm not sure if this really belongs here, but I was just so happy that I just had to share it.
I was dinking around on r/PCMasterRace today and found out that they had a folding team. Sure that they would be one of the highest teams, I check their ranking , and was surprised to see that the were in 108th place, while our team is currently in 18th place. Well done guys. This really just shows how supportive our community is of efforts like this.

My friend just bought a GPU, Radeon HD 7870.
Me: "Nice GPU, so where's your PC?"
Friend: "Here."
He has laptop ;_; and he bought a desktop GPU....
It can be set as an external GPU, but it's hard to find the part....
Now I don't know what to do with the HD 7870....

Speaking of dual screens...
My x301 with the GeChic portable monitor. Monitor is works with standard video inputs (vga or hdmi... ) and uses USB for power. Try this with them other flimsy notebooks! B)

Lenovo needs to stop using TN panels in their highest end T and W series.

Well, they were xD Seems every successive release now they are sacrificing functionality to make it look nicer. 7-row keyboard is gone, to make it look more modern. Trackpoint buttons on the way out with their upcoming Haswell releases, to take away as many buttons as possible and reduce clutter. Angled edge at the front of the palmrest/top of LCD which kept out dust and dirt gone, upcoming Haswell designs are flat all the way across. Display latch gone... I guess that didn't serve a huge purpose but it sure felt good whenever I closed it :P... LCD Roll cage gone for thinner displays. Strong steel hinges attached directly to the internal metal frame gone, now replaced by drop down hinge like their Ideapads, with the hinge attached to the LCD now, and again with no magnesium roll cage in the LCD anymore... :/
EDIT: Anyway... Thar she blows! Beautiful!

I've got my T61 and it's still going strong 6 years later (still has original IBM logo hehe). It looks exactly the same as it did when I bought it, and it seems to be indestructible. Stuck in an SSD and it flies. Not really suitable for gaming or CAD anymore but I just use it for lighter stuff. 16:10 screen is way better for browsing and documentation. I love the tough look, I don't really like the direction Lenovo is taking them now, trying to make them sleek consumer devices rather than workhorse machines. Hinges redesigned, touchpad redesigned, trackpoint buttons gone... :(
That being said I don't mind the new keyboard. It's quite good as far as the typing experience goes. The layout could use a complete overhaul (and by that I mean it needs to be almost exactly what it was before), although I'm glad they removed the page forward/back buttons by the arrow keys. Those were a disaster. Lost so much stuff I typed into internet forms because of those.
Yeah... when I finally retire this one I'm not sure if I'll get another ThinkPad. Lenovo has messed with the ThinkPad design so much I'm not going to consider them with any more favor than other OEMs... as far I'm concerned they are not part of the same brand or line that my T61 is from.

pastafingers reacted to skullbringer in [FALSE ALARM] GTX 980 Ti 5.5GB VRAMgate Reloaded?! WTF
I did the testing wrong and therefore my results were wrong. How to do it right:
This is my correct result:
So no VRAMgate with 980 Ti.
Sorry for causing any confusion!
Ok, so another forum member just messaged me, asking what my experiences with the GTX 980 Ti were: "What I want to know is, are you limited to utilizing only 5.5 GB or can you use a full 6.1 GB. What's your FPS in the Witcher? Which card do you have?"
I kinda lol'd at the thought that there might be a VRAM restriction like with GTX 970, where one eighth of the VRAM is attached serially and therefore runs much slower than the rest.
So I just ran the test (You can download it here from Guru3d.) and this is what I got:
To be honest, I dont know what to think right now... GTX 980Ti was advertised to have 6GB of VRAM, but it does not really?!
With GTX 970 Nvidia admitted it to be an error in their marketing:
So did I get something wrong here or was there an internal "misunderstanding" at Nvidia again?! And why did nobody notice this earlier?!

pastafingers reacted to SuperPug in Can't change stock N600 fans' orientation (or can you?)
Yeah fans dont come pre threaded... The screw makes the threads when you install it the first time so its fine.

pastafingers reacted to dfsdfgfkjsefoiqzemnd in Can't change stock N600 fans' orientation (or can you?)
The rear fan doesn't have a dust filter, so if you plan on using it as an intake, make sure you get something that can be used as such. fine mesh ideally, but a piece of old pantyhose could do the trick.
Also if you have an aftermarket air cooler (I see yours is stock but I'll mention it anyway), make sure it isn't blowing towards that fan as you'd be reducing the effectiveness of both.

pastafingers reacted to ZetZet in Can't change stock N600 fans' orientation (or can you?)
There are no threads, it's plastic, you just screw it in an threads happen.
