Big updates take an eternity to do OTA because iOS has to

1. download the OTA
2. extract it (it's a zip)

3. copy it to the temporary partitions for the update (steps 2 and 3 are what it does when it says Preparing Update)

4. verify with Apple's servers that the update is valid (hasn't been tampered with and isn't too old to install)

5. reboot

I doubt it will take an hour, but I typically do my updates via iTunes with a downloaded firmware file because it's much faster

IIRC it's the same situation on macOS as well now. I had a 2014 Mac Mini and on Mojave installing updates wasn't too bad, but with Catalina and above (which is when the dedicated system partition became a thing) it started to take an absolute eternity to install updates. Though I think that's also just a macOS thing now because my M1 Mini behaves the same way, albeit much faster than the trash ol' 2014.

Also that is very odd app install behavior. I've got a Pixel 7, SE2, and a 15PM (used to have a 13PM) and usually every one of the iPhones would end up installing faster than the Pixel 7, or at least install equally fast.

iOS 14 and up introduced sealed system partition (and 15 added signing to it), which adds an extra layer of updating time. No longer can you just store OTA update files in a temp directory on the real filesystem, you have to create a new partition, dump files there, and then write them back to the old partition (which murders optimizations for APFS in that it supports changing a file's location on the filesystem without moving the physical data).

Doesn't help that the Ventura+ Settings app lags immensely while installing updates - I just update via softwareupdate cli and creating bootable installers.

Installed Monterey on one of my Xserves and the difference between the Settings app there and Ventura is MASSIVE.

I literally got a sunburn just from driving inside a modern car with the windows up for a couple hours. My skin was peeling the next day. I think I might be the whitest person alive

It always kinda baffled me that ;

I wish it's hard for me to get a tan, so I don't have to look like someone just dumped a bucket of dark walnut wood stain for just doing a bit of activity under the sun. >(
