kachel94 reacted to LinusTech in August 31 2018 - WAN Show Document
Riley and I have known each other for almost 8 years and we've worked together in some capacity for over half of that time.

He asked to review a graphics card as a total joke. That's not his forte and he's perfectly comfortable with that. Even back at NCIX Tech Tips (as he mentioned on the WAN Show today) he got Ivan's help with a lot of the benchmarking stuff. Big deal.

You also need to understand that he's not some intern who isn't sure about his job security or his skills. Evaluating gaming cards may not be one of them but who cares? That's not what he was hired to do.

Riley was brought in as a specialist for TechLinked.

Something you guys might also not realize is that Riley is perfectly comfortable dishing out his share of trolling off-camera - even if he's not sure where the limits are yet with the live audience.

If LMG was a horrible place to work and anyone actually took me seriously about this stuff, we'd probably have a little more turnover, don't you think? These are very talented people who could get a job tomorrow if they felt like it.

We tease each other, but it's part of having some fun at work instead of being all corporate.

I messaged Riley to tell him people were upset at the way he was treated on the WAN Show and to make sure he was okay and he had to go find the timestamps people were posting to see why he was supposed to be upset.

So it's probably worthwhile to try re-watching with all of that in mind..

Yes it would be good for that, but you shouldn't have any problems with those pumps the D5 is capable of 1500L/h and even when dialed back will be more than capable.

kachel94 reacted to WMGroomAK in Using the internet to detect earthquakes?
Originally saw the link for this over on HardOCP and as a geologist, thought the concept sounded interesting so pulled up the article.  A Geophysicist over at Stanford has developed a method to turn existing fiber optic infrastructure into a massive seismic network in order to create a higher density sensor.  The technique works by measuring the backscatter signals from the fiber optic cable to measure the vibrations and strain on the cable.  So far, they have run a trial using a 3-mile figure 8 loop on the Stanford campus and have been able to pick up small local tremblors as well as the recent Mexico earthquake.  The array, while not as sensitive as a standard seismograph, can be used to distinguish between a magnitude 1.6 and 1.8 earthquake as well as pick up the different P and S waves.  The biggest benefit from this is that the cost of using the existing infrastructure of fiber optic internet to establish this sort of network is less than installing seismometers, which can lead to more data and better coverage of cities.

While this is not as sensitive as a standard Seismometer network, I could definitely see this as being useful in large urban environments, especially for mapping out the substrate material of the cities, engineering more earthquake proof structures and potentially providing for a possible early warning system (although that part may be very limited in capability).

As shown above if you want to change the default location of "Documents' right click on it go to properties then "location" and finally "Move" point the folder at your new directory.
You can change the drive letter assigned to your drive in "Disk Management" but i don't really see a massive necessity to do it if stuff is already pointing at it.

kachel94 reacted to ARikozuM in Reason for a gaming keyboard?
It has the word "gaming" on it making it inherently better in every way when gaming especially when coupled with RGB.

Disregard the above [as "gaming" is a marketing term]...

If you play games that have complicated button arrangements, macros can make setting those closer much better. In the case of some KB's, you can actually set multiple sets of macros for any single game. For example, you're playing an RPG and will use a sword and shield. Set your weapon skills to one set for fast access after using 1-5. Then do the same on another set for magic or archery. I play a lot of strategy and RPG's and having those easily accessed keys near WASD makes things much easier rather than having to press "I" for inventory (seriously, couldn't make it Tab?) or, for AoE2, go to Town Center and make 5 villagers with only one button press.

The 2nd reason could be better switches. This is purely subjective and only you can determine which switch is right for you. Some like membrane and others use mechanical. For mechanical keys, some people like MX Blues and others Reds. I prefer Romer-G after using Blues, Reds, Browns, and membrane. You should walk into an electronics store and test out the keyboards as you like. I have a paragraph that I like to type out a few times to get a first impression of the switch and keycaps.

Third reason from me would be elevating your game. If you've ever felt like a KB or component has held you back or that you've outgrown it, you need an upgrade to advance yourself. Having keys that take less force to actuate or that you can more accurately depress without bottoming out will make your follow-up strokes faster as you're wasting less time to do so.

I don't understand why you'd want such cheap hardware. Just virtualise it if its for learning and testing. If you're learning how to manage DC's for a job, then you'll need to know about virtualisation as thats where everything is now.

You may want to consider an upcoming coffee Lake i5 instead. A lot of cad programs (auto cad included) have a lot of single threaded portions.

Also I would get a 1060 6gb instead for CUDA and because they're cheaper.

Also get a different psu, even though it's platinum it's still worse than others like the focus Plus, g2/G3, etc.

I wonder if the Xeons will have this same dual-PCB design, and if it can be proven that they are the exact same chip, by swapping the top-layer PCB between the two. that would be awesome.
