  1. Same here. Watching it on youtube, but can't find it in my floatplane feed
  2. Budget (including currency): 3-5k CAD Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: - The most demanding game I play is MSFS, other than that mostly RTS and RPG games - CAD (CATIA) - Encoding video (handbrake) Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): My current build is 4770k, Maximus VI Formula, 32gb DDR3, NH-U14S 860W Corsair Platinum psu (approx. 8 years old) 1TB Samsung SSD (SATA) 2x 3TB HDDs in RAID1 6800XT (main) + 3070. Mining on both in downtime. 27" 1440p IPS 60Hz monitor The 4770k and 6800XT run almost every game I play fine on good or maxed settings, but it chokes on Flight Sim where there's lots to see (cities, buildings, etc...). CPU is pinned in these situations. I like eye candy in games and try to crank everything up as high as possible, the types of games I play aren't super demanding from a frame-rate perspective (ie. not a twitch shooter gamer), but more fps is generally a more pleasant experience to a point. With work-from-home, I really felt cramped on my 27" monitor, and so I want to upgrade to an ultrawide (3440x1440). I feel that resolution bump would really exacerbate the CPU bottleneck, particularly in gaming, so I planned late last year to upgrade as follows: keep GPUs (obv), CPU cooler, and PSU replace board/cpu with a 5900X + X570E Strix add 1TB NVME, 4TB SATA SSD Update case to something that would fit both cards well. I'm partial to the stuff Fractal makes (Define 7) But now I wonder: - Does increasing resolution like this (from 2560x1440 to 3440x1440) tend to make a CPU bottleneck worse? - Should I look into Alder Lake? - Should I wait for AM5 with AM4 getting to the end of its life? - Will DDR5 bring some benefit? I know it'll be more expensive but I'm not super cost sensitive if there is a tangible benefit (easier replacement in 5 years, better performance, etc..) as I've been saving couch change since my last build almost a decade ago. - Should I look at replacing my PSU? If it were to die I have other PCs to pick up the slack until a new PSU comes in, but if a failing PSU would take out shiny new components, it's probably better to retire the old one. I'm not in a huge rush to upgrade since gaming is a small fraction of my downtime and I feel that's the main place my CPU shows its age. Transcoding my 15+TB media library to x265 (to save space on my NAS and reduce network congestion during playback) is taking a long time on 4 cores, but it's not critical I speed up that workflow.. more of a nice-to-have. Will I notice a huge performance bump on MSFS and in Handbrake going from 4770k to a 5900X and in your opinion, is it enough to justify buying into a late-ish cycle processor/platform? Or better to wait for the next gen? What are the current best guesses on the next gen AMD CPU release timeframe? thoughts, comments appreciated!
  3. I was lucky enough to overpay for a 3070 way back in February on a Newegg bundle. Since then, I've managed to get a reference 6800XT. Which should I keep? My use-case is as follows: 2560x1440p monitor, but will probably upgrade to a 30-something-inch 1440 ultrawide in the near future. Gaming: primarily Flight Simulator and a couple older games. Not a lot of AAA games but I like solid framerates and eye candy. I haven't tried Raytracing, but am interested in it. It's not really a deal-breaker unless someone can convince me it's the best. Productivity: Solidworks and CATIA (V5) design (surface/part/product design) Mining in my down-time from work/gaming. Would love to dabble with VR, but no set-up just yet. I know I'm CPU-bottlenecked with my 4770k for MSFS and other newer games, but will probably upgrade to current-gen Ryzen when funds allow (58 or 5900X) Whichever one I don't keep, I'll sell to a good friend for MSRP. So my question: which card should I keep, considering my use case? It seems like in pure gaming workloads the 6800XT is the winner. In mining, it seems to be a wash. I found references to the RTX cards performing better in some productivity tasks but it wasn't clear how the 6800XT would perform in a CAD environment. Is VR better on the RTX or the 6800XT? I've only ever had Nvidia GPUs, is there anything drastically different about Radeon GPUs in terms of drivers/software functionality?
  4. have you looked at nanoxia cases? They're very similar to the Define R4.. Pretty sure the Deep Silence 5 is the same size as the R4 http://www.nanoxia-world.com/product/1/62/Deep+Silence+5+Window
  5. high-profile RAM can clash with the u14s push fan depending on your mobo and fan configuration. I made a couple posts on my pcpartpicker build (http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/b/I2z) explaining the clearance and how it all fits together.. have a look at the pictures and read my comments below the build apologies if linking to my build is frowned upon.. too lazy to clip, condense, and repost the whole deal at the moment edit: my username on pcpartpicker is pikguard and my conversation with BigBoss94 is the one where I'm discussing the RAM clearance
  6. I dont have any on my case. I might put them on the back-side of the mobo tray one day tho
  7. This Mismatching monitors bug the crap out of me in multi-monitor setups (just my OCD opinion, of course ) . I would lean more towards 2x1440p 'cause moar pixels but you sound kinda set on 3x1080p and you're already 33% of the way there
  8. I'm not sure about you but I'd rather have some hardwood caps. Like black walnut, or some maple To do a nice concave top you need a 5-axis router ($$$) and the pockets for attaching to the cherry switches would be either very difficult or very time consuming to machine (both = $$$$). I wonder if gluing a nice veneer to some existing plastic caps would work??
  9. non-standard keyboard layouts irritate the sh*t out of me. Case in point: Lenovo in their infinite wisdom decided to switch the Fn and Ctrl keys on the thinkpad X220t.. After 3 years of owning this computer I stlil can't perform ctrl hotkeys reliably
  10. Just thought I'd share my recent experience with Fractal Design customer service in case anyone is on the fence about which case to purchase. I was gaming the other night when my hyperactive spaniel got all worked up, charged into the room, and started running laps. My headphones were plugged into the front panel connector and he got tangled up in the cable. Needless to say, my case/headphones lost that disagreement and now my connector is broken. I sent in a request to Fractal Design tech support (who, by the way, have one of the BEST helpdesk systems I've ever used) asking about replacement part numbers and where I could purchase them. They responded the next morning saying replacement parts will be mailed out ASAP. I had basically the same experience when I first got the case and one of the latches didn't hold the front panel very well. Both times: they were quick to respond, super helpful, and friendly. FD customer support FTW!

  12. I got Rocksmith for christmas from my brother but I can't find any online retailers that have the cable in stock. Also, the Shine 3 I want is backordered on NCIX.... FWP..
