  1. A number of people are understandably comparing to the bluetooth contact tracing app (which is also due to be released in Australia). In my view, there are 2 massive differences between this and that. The first is that the bluetooth app has no direct location data, it's only checking who you've come into proximity with. That could be on Mars for all the app knows. The second difference is that the app is explicitly opt-in. You have to download and use the dedicated app. You can't get much more opt-in than that. Whereas this scheme is not only automatic, there's no way to opt-out. And worse, they didn't even tell us it was happening. The original article is an 'exclusive'. Meaning there was no public announcement, someone probably leaked it to the journalist who then followed up and got if confirmed. If not for the journalist, we'd have no idea they were doing this.
  2. https://www.theage.com.au/technology/mobile-phone-location-data-used-to-track-australians-movements-during-coronavirus-crisis-20200404-p54h09.html One of Australia's largest Telcos is giving location data to the government to track people's movements. The other telcos are refusing to say whether they're also doing it and have no legal obligation to disclose. It's not as bad as the headline suggests. The data is not personal, and only shows the number of people in a given area at a given time. They've stated it will not be used to enforce self-isolation. Would be curious to hear Luke and Linus' thoughts on this kind of data usage on the next WAN show.
  3. Honestly, you look pretty set. CPU is fine for the GPU. If you really want to upgrade something, you could get a bigger SSD or upgrade to a Z370 motherboard, so you can overclock the CPU.
  4. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Amazon always show the lowest available price? And it says "used and new", so there are second-hand listings, which are obviously cheap and that's the price amazon displays. If you go into the produce page, it'll show which ones are used, which are new and the various prices for each.
  5. Why was "sponsored showcase" not in the title? Because that's exactly what this video was.
  6. Linus and LMG seem really committed to being clear about sponsors and taking great care in their video titles. The various livestreams and discussions on the WAN show about this make their position clear. Which is why I'm highly disappointed that the two most recent videos ("How we make a video in one day" and "How did they fit a gaming PC in this") were labelled as regular videos. Both of them are the very definition of sponsor showcases. Linus has said many times that in regular videos the sponsor has nothing to do with the video topic, and if it does, then it's a showcase. I'm hoping this was just a once-off oversight (even though it's happened twice in a row). Plus sponsor showcases are supposed to be 'extra' content. I'm curious to see how many videos we get this week. Will we get the regular six in addition to these two showcases? Somehow I doubt it.
  7. Every ~2-3 hrs my pc freezes for ~1-2 seconds. The exact symptoms vary. The main one that happens every time is the speakers give a loud buzz, and I can often hear the fans get interrupted briefly as well. Occasionally when it's really bad, the Audio controller will disconnect and reconnect. First thing I tried was removing all overclocks, but that didn't help. I've also re-seated the cables and RAM but that didn't help either. I'm not really sure where to go from here or what might be causing the problem. 8. I have an 8600K which has a max of 16 PCIE Lanes. Intel lists PCIE configurations as Up to 1x16, 2x8, 1x8+2x4. I have a GTX 1080 in a 16x slot and a Wifi-card in a 1x slot, and have ordered a USB expansion card, which will also go in a 1x slot. Motherboard is ASUS Prime Z370-A. My question is, as the CPU has a max of 16 lanes, does having other slots occupied reduce the lanes available for the graphics card? Is it running on only 8, or 15 lanes with the 1x wifi card? How much of an effect would that have on performance? Is there somewhere in the BIOS or elsewhere you can view and control PCIE lane usage? Will installing a second expansion card reduce my GPU's bandwidth even further? Thanks
