It's the first product of this kind, of course it will be expensive. The PC required for such a gadget will also be more expensive than a normal computer. The prices will drop in time.

Somewhat better value than Oculus given the hand controls but it's all a crapshoot right now to see who is actually better.

Pricing will be high no matter what. This is enthusiast grade hardware requiring enthusiast grade desktops. It's not for us "poor people" on any level. I need 1 grand in GPUs just to run VR properly to start off with

Not sure if you noticed, but right at the top of that page it also says "The International Olympic Committee recognizes some board games as sports including Chess." Pretty certain chess doesn't require a great deal of physical fitness...

On another note, a lot of the comments about how "gaming is not a sport" and "people can't make money from gaming" sound a lot like the people a few years ago, going on about how "making YouTube videos isn't a job". Which is quite ironic, seeing as we're having this discussion on a forum created by someone who makes a living from YouTube videos

    EDIT:
That being said, I don't think e-sports should be at the Olympics. It's a great spectator event, sure, but it's not (at the moment) what people watching the Olympics want to see. There's a reason that Chess isn't part of the Olympics, despite being recognised as a sport.

unfortunately it sounds like he was warned, and told not to be there before this event.  I hate when cops detain the innocent as you say it is a bitter experience, but by the same token when people are arrogant and selfish I have little sympathy for them, mostly I don't even care if the punishment does not fit the crime because it certainly fits the attitude.

My only gripe with the "publicly funded" argument is that the school is only funded so it can educate and provide tools for learning, not so anyone of the street can capitalize on free commodities.

Regardless of where the outlet is positioned it's still school owned and so up to the school as to whether "the public" should be allowed to use it. Considering that it was near some tennis courts and a parking area I'd hazard a guess that it'd be used for lighting, perhaps. Or maybe that's the area where they hold fairs, and so they'll need power for that (and it'd be cheaper than having to rent a generator).

If I leave my laptop on my front doorstep then I'm an idiot, but it's still theft if someone takes it (although not breaking and entering).

Fair enough, item =/= service. Although if I have an unsecured wifi network I'm still an idiot but it's still (I think) illegal for someone to come and use it.

And we don't know what the situation is with lights/other power needs, so we can't really make any reasoned argument about them without knowing more. Ofc if the situation is that there's some random electrical socket which is never used then that's fairly ridiculous but still not a reason for someone to just use it for their personal use.

He definitely has a right to use the facilities provided by the school, but what his taxes are paying for is the ability for him to (potentially) send his children there. I'd be fairly confident in thinking that one of the services provided by schools is not as a place to charge my electric car (unless there was a designated spot for doing so, and the school had said it was ok of course).

Plugging in at a coffee shop is different, as most coffee shops don't have an issue with people charging devices; if they did, they would likely not provide sockets in publically accessible areas, or at least have signs up advising people that charging was not permitted.

That being said, considering the offence, being arrested is pretty OTT imo. For something of this nature I'd expect at most a fine, and possibly just a warning.

Technically, G-Sync hasn't been released yet so we don't actually know if it has any effect on performance (NVidia PR and independent testing are 2 very different things). Based on what they've said I'd expect it to have little to no impact, but we don't know that for sure until we've actually seen G-Sync tested.

Valinor got a reaction from eshbop in nVidia G-sync
GSync sounds like a neat idea, but making it proprietary had me concerned. Take PhysX, for example. That could have been used to write entire games physics engines (from what I've read) in a way which would have enabled far superior physics to what had been seen before (because offloading to GPU means moar betterness). Yet all the games I've seen PhysX in used it only for eye candy, not for anything more substantial, which I'd imagine would be due to the game devs not wanting to write such a core part of their game (considering how it'd affect the mechanics and everything, not just how it looks and performs (such as Mantle, because I just know someone's gonna make that comparison)) using a proprietary system. Then again, if it's something which is relatively easy to put into games then it'd likely come up as an option if it's available and that'd likely see far more adoption imo.

As an aside, the comment about "being implemented in gaming monitors" immediately got me worried, as nearly every gaming monitor I've seen described as such is a TN panel with a high refresh rate (nothing wrong with a high refresh rate, just with the TN-ness).

And Anand mentioned in his coverage that "It's seriously a huge difference". This was in a NVidia controlled demo ofc, so it's possible that it was being compared to a worst-case scenario, but as always it's a "wait for the benchmarks" kinda situation.

EDIT: Meant to mention that I'd be worried about all proprietary stuff (Mantle included), but re-reading this I'm not sure I got that impression across properly...

Oh, and very infrequently I'll just get a couple of hours where my PC won't work. It just crashes and won't turn back on for a bit, then it'll be fine. It's annoying and unrepeatable, but (so far) it seems to fix itself...
