well.. i can confirm you are an idiot. but really the fact that you didnt even realize it is not that weird. SLI doesnt "double" performance like some people think it does.

What are you even talking about? I was considering optimization, not code readability.

    For example,
int something = 86400; //or 24*60*60 Which is optimized, in compilation and runtime, and also perfectly "readable".

Then document the operation via comment, and use a calculator to do the operation beforehand and hard-code it.

For such operations, I'm pretty sure all modern compilers do that.

    #include <stdio.h>void main() { int a = 5 * 10; printf("%d", a);} This produces the instruction "move 50 into the edx register":
mov $0x32,%edx There is no need to perform a math operation that is the same every time, thus the compiler optimizes it away. I would guess that interpreted languages perform the same type of optimization as this is basic stuff to deal with for a compiler, JIT or otherwise.

I ended up manually overriding the XMP base clock change back to the normal 100 strap because my system was perfectly stable with it. Not all will be, and many CPU/motherboard combinations will require a 125 strap to reach 2666MHz RAM.

Great guide but I got a bit confused. When you enabled XMP you said the bclk changed to 125 and had to adjust cpu timings to it. But later when you said to mess a bit with the bclk for a stable overclock you changed it from 100 to 101... so which is it? Enable XMP and go back to 100 bclk or stay with the XMP bclk?

Love the "it's science time." I don't like Windex at all, leaves residue and the ammonia in some types of it destroys tint and paint.

Foaming alcohol based glass cleaner... "I put that S*&@# on everything."
Spray onto the surface (screen, keyboard, case, cables; I avoid cleaning acrylic at all costs though ), apply liberally for really oily marks on brushed aluminum ( like my old Lenovo laptop ).
Let sit for a second, then use a microfiber and clean with AND against grain.
As it dries keep buffing as it pulls any dust, lint and streaks with it and you should have a really clean surface.
Last step, sell said laptop and never buy brushed again so everything looks new all the time.

I never said I'm not jealous, but the way I look at it is I look at the bright side.  I'm getting to do something that nerds like me pretty much NEVER get the chance to do, but dream about most of their lives.  Also, I plan on building a 2-3k beast of my own once DDR4 ram and the next gen of video cards hit, I'm sure the difference in performance will be minimal between his system and mine.  It'll be good enough/

I think it's because I grew up with wealthy people around me.  My best friend's dad spent around $75k having an old Dodge Challenger completely restored to original specs.  The car will never be worth what he spent on it, but he didn't care.  People gonna do what they wanna do, as long as you take the time to tell them "Hey, this is completely overkill.  People who spend $20k less than you will have almost the same perceivable performance in most things... Are you ok with that?"

Not really.  If you're mainly gaming, you made a wise decision.  It'll be a few more years before game devs start utilizing 8 or more cores, so that's still a wise decision.  He just wanted all the cores he could possibly throw at his professional applications without getting TOO absurd.

The goal for this build was to be completely and absurdly overkill for everything my friend can throw at it.  He has more than enough money to build this and not bat an eyelash. He is a 3d designer by trade, and plans on getting into 3 printing as well. Please keep all the comments about how overkill this is out of this thread.  We don't care.  We've heard it.  We know it's obscenely overkill.  Neither of us care.

I planned the final details on this forum and if anyone is curious, here is the thread.

With that said, I've been planning this build with my friend for over 2 months.  I'm sure there will be things that we planned wrong, or chose the wrong part.  We're both expecting to have to return parts and switch them.  I'll be documenting the progress of the build.  I know this thread will be a popular one, so I'll lay out our timetable so people don't go crazy wondering when the next update will be.

The build will consist of 3 phases with 1-2 weeks between each phase for planning, part fabrication, etc.
Phase 1: Aircooled build - Just get all the hardware running, playing nice, do burn ins, and make sure the system is stable.
Phase 2: Clean up - Make the build pretty, get everything put in to place, all hardware mounted where it belongs for phase 3.
Phase 3: Watercooling - Take the pretty to the next level, and make this rig silent with a fully custom watercooling loop.

Being EVGA, I would try to contact them to see if they would replace it for you. Just last year I was moving my 8500GT from one PC to another and same thing happened. I felt myself shock it and it was dead. I contacted EVGA and they said I could send it back and they could have a look at it. I thought why not as it was already a dead card and it might as well have gone into the garbage. In the end they couldn't fix it, nor could they find a replacement 8500GT to send me, so they ended up sending me a GT520 as a replacement instead! The card was surely out of warranty (8000 series please, it was also overclocked and I had installed an Arctic Accelero L2 cooler on it) but all I had to pay for was the shipping to send my card back and for them to send me a replacement.

    Massive thumbs up for EVGA!
