So i just bought an HD650 cuz curious of why people say its the best and 'legendary'. I actually already auditioned them a long time ago and thought it was too colored and just 'OK'.
Little did i know that.... this thing sounds absolutely NATURAL! (not neutral, don't get confused)
The voices, the instruments, soundstage.... EVERYTHING is so... 3D like. Listening to binaural recording is just a trip to heaven.
I've heard headphones like the HD800, Beyer T1, TH900 and many other closed backs/ open backs. I tell you, NOTHING can get to the naturalness of the HD650, I REPEAT NOTHING ( maybe HD600 can... i dunno i haven't tried) but at around 400-500$, this thing is a BARGAIN. A MUST HAVE!
So if you want a "real" experience of being "there", this headphone is the way to go. This thing eats everything from classical, rock, J-pop/J-rock, jazz or any other genre. Maybe you may want to get something else for dubstep or bass heavy music because this headphones sounded a little bit too airy. But again, its all in the recording.

Just telling my experience, not a review since i just got them

lol u guys talking bout jpop, most asian music are so badly mastered, no audio combination can make them natural. unless you use some sort of processing.
The Beyerdynamic T1 has accentuated treble and nasty sibilance, HD 800 has nasty peak at the 6khz, means its dry and tizzy as f*k. All audio technica doesn't have that stereo imaging.
Is the HD650 dark? i would say no, they are perfect. if you think its dark then your ears are broken with all the treble grain in headphones. And dont judge with badly mastered/recorded music. especially in digital format where its all compressed stuff and has that digital tinged. The reference here is how its like listening to Vinyl or some analog recording, and the HD650 is the one where its 'kinda' does that.

And no... i dont support hedfi...

i dont really care about what y'all guys say, but HE-500 leagues out both of those. planar drivers are unmatch for sound quality per dollar (below 1000$ that is) the degree of transparency is stunning.
the downside though is finding that right source and amping, and the weight/comfort are not the best .

There are plenty of people. No, I don't have a wide range of $1000 headphones because there are less than a handful of good ones. Not only that, the OP isn't looking to spend $1000 so the argument is irrelevant. Good headphones can be acquired for much much less.

Headfi is a joke of a website and is a giant sponsored mess that is ran by a greedy owner Jude. There is a reason I'm on here and not headfi and why I don't like it when people just tell our community members to go over there.

It can get loud enough doesn't mean it can get loud enough without distortions like clipping. When you have to crank it to max, there really should be clipping present. HE400 requires less voltage than HD800s, but is in line with Game Zeros in voltage required, yet requires quite a bit more current. I don't get how people can be iffy about Game Zeros on onboard yet feel fine with HE400s with onboard when the Game Zeros are easier to drive. Surely if HE400s are ok onboard than so are 90% of all other headphones? Or is the reason that many onboards are much weaker at giving the required amount of voltage than current?

And just to prevent any misunderstanding, I'm not arguing with you. I ask many questions about anything I think is in conflict with what I know. Look at my question threads at HA, they are at 230 posts!

My guess is that you're a casual listener, if the sound is good to you, you like it, even though it doesn't actually means 'better'. ATH-M50 is one of a lifetime close back headphone that has one of my favorite (but not perfect) frequency response, but everything else that thing produce are beaten by competitors.
honestly, there's no alternatives to the ATH-M50 for comfort without changing sound, but i have a suggestion for you, Philips Fidelio X1, its open back, comfortable, bass heavy, treble light... maybe the midrange and vocals isn't the same as the M50 but honestly nothing else is...

    lol....
    NO
To OP pls don't go ATH-M50, from my experience, M50 has super harsh treble. Your beyers is infinitely better, its grainless, more transparent, better soundstage than the M50. You're actually downgrading! and also did i mention its not a comfortable headphone?
My suggestion is getting a tube amp, to make the sound 'warm'.

    Pc gaming 75%, music 25%?
    comfort number 1 priority?

then the Sennheiser HD598 is what you're looking for.
imo never seen the fostex T50 rp myself, but already with the HD600/650. To my surprise, they're quite a 'small' headphone. full of clamping force, and comfort is just not what they're meant to be.
and the soundstage is actually quite small unless you amped them right.
for the HD598, its actually the most comfy headphones... EVER, (i've already put a HD800 on my head btw). directional sound is REALLY good, very balanced sound like HD600, just less musicality.
you don't even need an amp or DAC to drive them.

also when visitting head fi, just take it with a grain of salt...
