Folding@home is a network of volunteer computers distributed around the world that aims to perform biomedical research with the single intent of helping to further understand and develop cures for a range of diseases such as; Alzheimer's, cancer, and Parkinson's. The exact research that is done is simulating the 'folding' of proteins in the body, this is important because the function of a protein id directly related to its physical shape. And this, when the protein is created in the body it needs to reshuffle its shape to get into the correct structure to perform its task. Many illnesses can be linked to faulty proteins in the body such as many cancers and neurological issues, along with a wide number of other general health concerns. This network if compared with the TOP500 list of supercomputers would fall into 2nd, Folding@home is one of the world's fastest computing systems, with a speed of approximately 98.7petaFLOPS. It would be 50% faster than the fastest x86 computer currently listed on the top500.

    COVID-19
But this is not why we are here, we are here to join the legion of other folders from around the globe who have taken up the fight against COVID-19.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common across the world.  These viruses can cause mild symptoms ranging from a fever and cough to more serious conditions such as severe pneumonia, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.
In December 2019, a new strain of coronavirus (COVID-19) was first identified in Wuhan City, China.  This virus has now spread to other countries.  The UK Chief Medical Officers have declared the risk to the public to be moderate. But the risk to individuals remains low.

    PASSKEYS! (they're really important)

Don't forget to get yourself a passkey from the link below to ensure that you hit the points requirement, the passkey is a feature that was added a while ago to the Folding Client that helps to authenticate each user on the network, an added bonus of this is the fact that it allows you to qualify for QRB(Quick Return Bonus) Points, QRBs are extra points you earn for submitting work units more quickly, such as if you have faster hardware or let the client fold full time, rather than on idle. QRB credit is awarded after 10 WUs have been submitted. You can get your passkey from the link below.

It doesn't hurt to say thank you, if someone has genuinely helped you out don't forget to drop a reaction on their posts, help others where ever you can and finally we are a team first and always.

Check your stats out here! Bare in mind it can take some time for your first WUs to appear so leave it a day or two.

N.tony reacted to Aznsteil in Logitech Z906, Edifier S2000Pro replacement - LF Speaker + Amplifier + Subwoofer + Free Knowledge
@kokakolia Thank you really for your insight, it's really a perspective I'm needing.
After researching and asking around about audio for around 3 month I come to the same conclusion. There always will be a better, smarter, maybe even cheaper choice. I can't wait people visiting me telling: "but what if you would went for DALI, ELAC, or that specific amplifier ... " I guess since everyone has some kind of different taste, they will always be different opinions towards listening experience. That's why this whole area is so much controversial.

I've decided for the B&W 607 for now, keeping the RP600M as a backup though. It would be ignorant to say "I will love B&W forever, since I'm owning them now". I will listen to them at home, if I get *that* feeling, I will keep them. Otherwise I will happily take advantage of todays online refund policies and order the Klipsch asap.

@Derkoli The Onkyo TX-NR686 looks really good in terms of features, not feeling missing out on anything. B&W 607 needing 8 ohm 100 w, which this receiver provides easily and has the option to bi-amp. B&W stating bi-amping COULD result in higher resolution in this and that area, well I doubt it. Will test it for sure though, really curious about that. I could even try to to connect my satellite speaker from the Z906 just to see if theres any improvement to sound instead using dac/amp if its subwoofer. Again, really nice find this Onkyo, thank you!

Lastly I need to connect them with each other. Googled speaker wire, and OF COURSE there are options.
Material full copper, copper aluminium, different kind of convinient plugs such as banana, u form and gauge ... omg gauge ...
I watched Techquickie for that to get some idea what I'm dealing with. The lesser the gauge digit, the bigger the thickness. The longer the distance, the lesser the gauge size. Never go beyond 50 feet / 15 meter, or higher frequencies could be lost due to material proberties of copper. So going safe with 4 mm² (6 gauge) full copper instead of 2.5 mm² (10 gauge) copper alu? And please don't tell me clear cable shroud sound better compared to black/whites/any color, I will lose my mind for sure u_u

My choice would be 50m 2 x 2.5 mm² transparent full copper for 38.90 € (0.78 € / m). 50 m so I can ditch every "less thick, lower quality" cable I am and will be using in the future, starting with the Z906.

If there are still no-goes, or "pay attention to" left over, please tell me. Otherwise I want to thank the following people:

@Dackzy You might not remember me, but You helped me early 2018 to get some basic understanding of headphone dac/amp, how Windows handles volume control and product recommendation. Even I still bought the Oppo HA 2 SE instead of your mentioned Audio GD NFB 11.32/28 (trust me I'm thinking atleast once a month about "what if I bought the 11.28 instead, would by DT 1990 sound better?") I really really appreciate your efforts back then. @rice guru Thank you! You helped me initially 2 threads ago to get an overview over products and features in audio. @emosun "no need to overcomplicate a simple setup." At this point I realise I have no idea about anything and started to rethink about my purchase decision of the Edifier S2000Pro. Even though your answers doesn't seem much, without you I could be ending up with an overcomplicated S2000Pro + studio subwoofers setup and still be unhappy about it. Thank you! @N.tony When Professional mean girl emosun did the prework with jabs and crosses, you did the final uppercut. Your post and following were eyeopening, it kinda scares me! You were the turning point why I gave up on the convinience purchase and started getting into audio the hard, google and time intensive way (100% the correct way). I stopped overhyping products and brand loyalty, actually started listening for hours to speaker sound demo's through youtube and co. Thank you! @kokakolia & @PriitM You guys pointed out speaker and brands have significant different sound signatures. With that I could first time in life decide what kind of sound profile I like to listen to. Before that I could just weirdly describe methaphorically what it feels like to listen to music. Your personal experience, kokakolia, with your Klipsch and the Q Acoustics 3020 gave me a good idea what to expect from said products. Thank you guys! @Derkoli Listen everyone! This guy is actually a legend! Not only that his audio stuff value seems to increase on a daily basis, he absolutely kicked ass with every weird question I throwed at him. Every. Single. One. You spend so much time helping me out, LTT should pay you for staying around here, because quality wise your post were really valueable. I really can not thank you enough, really. I mean really, thank you!

N.tony reacted to Aznsteil in Adding Subwoofer into 2.0 Powered Speaker
I feel like someone talking outside from the box I'm sitting in. That addictive consumption in consumber behavier box. While I read your reply I was wearing my DT 1990 Pro and listened to amazon music's playlist "best 2010er". Weirdly enough I was suprised how good music sounded on them, like I forgot the details it reveals. How do I describe it. Switching to the S2000Pro I would  recognize these details in music, too, if I really paid attention to it. But with my DT 1990, it's like they are presented to me unsolicited? Switching back to the active speaker to confirm if they are there: yes they are, if you really searching for it, but they could be gone easily if you just listened casually to them.

I think I forgot why I wanted speaker initially. I wanted to have that DT 1990 unquestioned detail presenting to the room to share with friends, without always wearing the headphones.

DAC's the same, only amp (ha2 se vs integrated speaker) and driver are different. It has to be the active speaker then. There was bass lacking with them, but I think buying a subwoofer wouldn't change my feeling about the details. I didn't find the ELAC's at that time shipping to germany, and the amp listed wasn't available either. Since I don't have any experience about speaker amp setup, I thought going with the S2000Pro would be way more convinient.

Sorry @Derkoli, I kinda not appreciate your efforts by my indecisiveness. I will return the S2000Pro and hopefully find a better fitting pair for me with your and mina's help. I keep the speaker stands though.

@N.tony Thank you kind stranger from the internet, you invested several minutes in your reply and saved me from a non fitting purchase decision. This reply is by far the best and most helpful.

N.tony reacted to LudwigVonSneider in This $150 HDMI Cable Boosts Image Quality.. WHAT??
Imo it makes it look worse.
It just makes everything soft and then cranks up the contrast and sharpening filter crushing blacks and drawing halos all over the place.

If you look at the first side by side from Tomb Raider, it makes all the small highlights three times bigger blobs destroying all detail in the process.
The same soft blobbiness is preset in the whole image, not only the highlights.
Also notice the the halo from the sharpening in the bottom right corner.

In the next side by side, Lara's jacket almost black (on my screen) with severe loss in detail where as the original looks completely fine.
This contrast boost can be seen in every example, but here you can see the downside well.
I'm not sure if this is the cables fault though, it could definitely be fuckup from LTT and how it was captured.

Here you can see what the overly done sharpening filter does. Look at the edges of the character. There is noticeable halo all around the character.
The pillar on the left is another good example. The original is perfectly fine, the edges are sharp and you can see some texture in it.
The filtered has horrible edges and all the global softening takes away from the texture in the pillar.

The whole image is just soft. The grass has little detail to left anymore. And look at the leaves and flowers, they are just blurry mess.

Some of the 1080p videos didn't show too many negative effects, but it wasn't better either. The contrast boost can fool you thinking it looks better... well, I mean, if you like it, then just crank that shit up on your tv.

You can find this type of conversations about bluray transfers from the day first blurays were released.
Some people like digital noise reduction that removes film grain, sharpened and contrasty image.
Others hate how digital noise reduction makes the actors look like wax sculptures, the halo around edges from over harpening and crushed blacks/blown out whites.
(I'm one of the latter ones)

I guess it boils down to - as it often does - personal preference.

N.tony got a reaction from Zando_ in Affordable G-Sync Monitor for 1050 Ti
Even then, you should kind of critically evaluate your setup, much like yesterday's LTT video on DDR speeds - yes, you can get an advantage of sorts by spending this much money (in this case it's ~$200 for just G-sync on top of an equivalent monitor), but realistically, there are definitely several upgrades available, that would give a much more noticeable advantage for this amount of moneys.

As people mentioned, selling your 1050Ti and adding $200 will probably get you a 1070, which can turn your ~30FPS G-sync experience into a solid 60FPS experience at higher settings. Alternatively, replacing 1050Ti with an RX480 and a FreeSync monitor will lead to both higher framerates, similar AdaptiveSync experience AND possibly a TN -> IPS upgrade for a change.

The only scenario when you might make a worse short-term decision, is when you know you will keep upgrading graphics cards, while staying in the green camp. Then it makes sense to invest in a monitor, which you will hold on to, instead of buying something less feature-complete and thus hampering the possible future gains. Now, whether doing this backwards future-proofing is sensible is up for debate, I personally am not a fan of such strategies.

I can't remember specifics and I'm away for the next while so I can't check. Just play with settings and online review profiles.
