Crunchy Dragon reacted to aisle9 in Which GPU?
Please don't buy a 580 to game on right now. The price is borderline homicidal. Buy a used 780 Ti instead.

But what if this is the only answer for them for a few years? Its not like Intel or AMD can go years and years without bringing out a new chip. I mean AMD has kinda done this, but it didnt work out well. I mean the fact is Carbon Nano tubes are not there yet and Quantum computing is not there either. I dont see any other choice. Software devs will have to get off their lazy asses and learn out to code for these new chips.

Bush wacking or jump the guard rail, either one works.
Airfare is quite expensive. Greyhound is cheap but takes forever!

if I had to make a guess, it is that Intel is having a difficult time reaching target clocks on 10nm to be sufficient for desktop and high-end laptop usages.
This is the primary difference I can think of between what Intel's 10nm is for, and Samsung's 10nm.

Crunchy Dragon got a reaction from Canada EH in Bought open box cpu, How should I stress test it to make sure that theres nothing wrong?
Cinebench and Aida64 are normally what people use. I've also seen Prime95 recommended, but I've not used it personally.
Also, that is a real steal for an 8600K, even being an open box.

Well, even so a MacBook would do the trick.
Or possibly a midrange laptop from Asus, Lenovo, or possibly Acer.

I particularly like the Lenovo ThinkPads, although those might be a little out of your budget.

Since I doubt you have any budget limitations, I would go for Seasonic Prime Ultra Titanium, 1000W should be more than enough.

Yeah because we have a nice good internet infrastructure. Cloud Computing will never take off until every one has a decent connection. The fact is, there are millions of American's stuck on slow as shit DSL or Satellite connections. Luck for me Im not one of them.
Now my question is why dont they just make the CPU's physically bigger and just add more cores? Im sure eventually they will find a new material to build CPU's out of.

I think the most amusing part of this kind of thread is how nostalgic it makes me feel. I have lived through almost exactly the same discussion three times in my life. Once in the late 1970's/early 1980's, once in the early to mid 1990's and again starting about 4-5 years ago. The argument is the same "computers are as fast as they need to be"/"we are reaching the end of computer advancement because of the physical limits of the materials". Then the original poster goes into a long involved discussion about both why we can't possibly make CPU's (or memory or Disks) any faster or smaller due to the actual physical limitations of the materials that are currently in use. Then adds on how the existing computers are as fast as we could possibly need for the foreseeable future so we could just stop advancement of chip manufacturing and live with the current generation forever since we don't need better than (68000, 80286, 80386, 68010... fill in your own favorite).
Sorry guys, I can't get excited about the physical limits of the material. I have heard it all before in the exact same arguments about the death of Moore's law, yes we will eventually run up against the limits, no I don't believe we are there yet. We are still on basic materials we haven't looked at anything more interesting than silicon, which is one of the easiest materials to work with, there are other options that I am sure are out there in the labs...

I know i was genuinely surprised at the price. They sell cheaper than market I know that. $220 for a new while others are at 240. openbox strix z370 itx as well for $143. $30 mobo discount down to $113. $288 + tax for 8600k + itx board. love that store.
I'll DL and run Cinebench then!

Nah there's still local deals to be had if you look around.
Or you can buy a complete PC, sell off everything else, and come out ahead.

Mining, but I suspect you already know this

Crunchy Dragon reacted to Mmore in Help on my build?
On first glance at that build one thing I'd recommend is adding an SSD for the operating system (Windows) to work from. This will drastically improve performance.
Parts look compatible to me. That motherboard is quite small compared to the case you've chosen, so it will look a bit funny but should work just fine. Keep in mind the case already has 2 fans included, in the front and rear. The 2 fans you've added will have to be installed either on the top or side (there are 4 additional 120mm fan slots), but they aren't required, 2 fans should do just fine.

Crunchy Dragon reacted to TheRandomness in can this small scratch be cause of death of my gpu?
Scrape off the solder mask and solder the traces back together. Alternatively, draw a line with liquid metal thermal paste, the smallest amount you can.

I would try running your computer without the hard drive installed to narrow down which component is making the noise.

Crunchy Dragon got a reaction from LienusLateTips in GPU problem : Upgrade now or holdon?
The 1060 6Gb would be a nice upgrade, I would wait until mining dies down more and see if you can grab one used for a decent price, or maybe even a 1070.
With that, an upgrade to an i7 wouldn't be bad for keeping your system as a whole running longer.
EDIT: As a fellow GTX 780 user, hearing about dying Kepler GPUs always worries me... RIP GPU, you will be missed.

The EK radiator should do the trick, it's also worth mentioning that you'd have an easier time pulling off such low load temps if you went for a 280 or 260mm rad.
