Bought some goodies to finish the rebuild of my x58 machine:

Gonna play around with DUET, looks pretty straight forward. I'm re-habbing my NZXT S340 Elite case, window is a bit scuffed up so going to use some automotive plastic scratch removal stuff, see if that works out, worst case scenario I get a new window cutout of lexan and attach using nuts and bolts.

Will end up having 512 GB nvme boot, 360 GB SSD JBOD and 2x 2TB platter drives for large file storage/archival.

Crunchy Dragon got a reaction from NZgamer in Telling a laptop to use integrated graphics under certain conditions
Laptop might be treating the animated wallpaper as a 3D application. Which also makes sense, that's gonna put a lot more strain on a GPU than just running a typical desktop background.

Edit: either that, or the Intel HD Graphics are what's making the fan speed ramp up due to having to run the animated background.

    no.

any benefit you may get, you could also get with tuning OC settings, and this way you also avoid potentially bricking your card in unexpected ways.

No the last two are perfect. Thanks. I could only find the database one, but it hasn't been active in like 7 years lol. But the other two have recent submissions. Thanks!

They don't fully fit your bill, but you can at least document your OC in the LTT database

Yeah you could. I used to daily 4.6GHz and benched in FS Physics with 4.9GHz. I think with 1.2V you could bump it up to 4.2GHz. Cache as high as 4.0GHz would do. You can go further with the OC socket but there's not much of a point.

X99 HEDT is a great platform especially with how cheap some of the Xeons are if you want all the multicore.

Yeah, buying a few thousand dollar laptop and a few hundred dollar dock for them not to work is a pretty massive oversight.

But I think this just goes to show every manufacturer can have issues with particular models. So for as much as people like to hate on certain companies, no one is perfect

Might just be for SEO purposes, so people looking for "y type of Xeon for HP server" would find it more easily.
Unless it is a separate SKU that doesn't work with most motherboards, so do check if that Xeon is compatible with your board

A better option is 24GB but with 8GB DIMMs, since you only need 3 sticks for that. Less stress on the IMC than 6x4GB.

My CPU came in today. It's a L bin 😭 Might only hit 4.3Ghz stable
Anyways stock 1660v3 is as powerful as my 4.4Ghz 5820k. OC'd it's about as powerful as the R7 2700X. The 9900k is about ~11% faster than 1660v3 but about 200% more expensive.
Overall a good upgrade and this CPU should last me another 3-5 yrs before I need to upgrade. A full decade on x99, future-proof check.

I recently re-discovered my long lost x58 gear nearly a year after moving, and am in the process of rebuilding the machine. I had taken the motherboard, cpu and ram and stuffed it into an unused HTPC case for safe keeping.

    Components:
Motherboard: EVGA X58 LE (141-BL-E757-TR) Processor: Intel i7 980X Memory: 24GB Corsair Vengeance 1600 mHz
    Other components going into it:
GPU: MSI Gaming GTX 980 4G (I presently have one, and may look to pick up a second for cheap off eBay for SLI) Storage: Kingston 120GB Sata3 SSD (Boot drive), Kingston 240GB Sata3 SSD (Games) PSU: EVGA Supernova 850B2 CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2
When I originally uncovered this gear, I was going to use it as a Plex Media server, but after researching the lack of on board graphics prevents me from using GPU based acceleration since the CPU does not support Quick Sync Video. So instead my i7-2600 system will be moved into Plex duty (Asus Maximus IV z68/16 GB Corsair Dominator, these were recently purchased and still pending arrival before rediscovering the x58 gear. I may look to grab a i7-3770K for the system, but we'll see.)

I know the x58 platform is getting a bit long in the tooth, but I've had enough of schlepping on a Core i3-7100 8GB DDR4 system on a Gigabyte H170 based motherboard, which is being pushed finally to HTPC duty where it belongs.

I mostly play Star Wars: The Old Republic (MMO), maybe some NFS: Underground/Underground 2 or some EA NHL 2K (Revival). I don't play a ton of modern games, although I do want to try the new remake of Resident Evil 2.

Some people I've met have the attitude of "if a reboot doesn't fix the problem, then it's broken for good".

Others will have a laptop sitting on their lap with the fans going at full blast(a couple restarts fixed that, apparently a problem with MacBooks, who knew), and complain that the laptop is "really hot". The same laptop that is sitting on their lap, at 23% overall system usage.

Crunchy Dragon reacted to Anomnomnomaly in IT Certifications!
Specific certs that are only valid for a specific piece of tech/software are a waste of time and money... Generalised qualifications are more valid... I've had specific certs for specific software and those have been worthless for 15yrs now... But the ones I have for other areas will never be. I was lucky... I never paid for the courses... But I know people who got conned into paying for courses (That I warned them were worthless) that would get them into the IT industry and wasted thousands on quals that weren't worth the paper they were written on... and now they' working in warehouses or driving a lorry because they're not qualified to do anything else.

It's like other areas here in the UK... you have to be qualified to do electrics, but you need a specific and expensive cert to sign of on electrical installs.  So all of those people I know who used to do electrical work and are more than qualified to do it... no longer will because they don't do it often enough to justify the expense of being certified each year to 'sign of and certify the works'...   the same applies for gas work... many a plumber will no longer work on certain types of central heating jobs because it requires a specific gas cert... or they simply do the plumbing side and then have a gas cert engineer in to do the rest.

You can't even do electrical work on your own house now without having it certified... or you won't be able to sell the house until it is.

I can understand the changes in the law, because people have died because of dodgy work being carried out by unqualified people... But getting the certifications is a ridiculous amount of money and unless you do it as a main job all year round... not worth the effort.

then they need to be taught as though they have zero experience, just don't give them false hope that a certification will help then get a job, a certification does not mean knowledge or experience. it's a checkbox on a resume.
