How much you looking to spend? There are a fair number of inverted cases on the market (this is the marketing term for the style of case you're referring to), though admittedly the ones I can think of off the top of my head are on the expensive side. be quiet!'s higher end cases like the Silent Base 802 usually have the inversion option (usually this is done manually by rotating the motherboard tray), and the Lian Li O11 Dynamic Evo does have options to invert it, though both of those options are $170+. There probably are some cheaper inverted cases you can find, though the cheaper ones are definitely not that common.

Among these options, TrueNAS Scale would seem to be the easiest way to start with, as it serves as a native NAS with other functions available by just installing apps, avoiding any complications such as management of VMs or issues with Docker in Windows.

This build would be a good start for a home lab, but it's questionable in some regards:
If you intend to make transcoding in Plex, then unfortunately, the GTX 970 GPU would not be capable of 4K HEVC decoding and would waste your power. You may need to replace it with a more recent GPU starting from GTX 1050 or Quadro P400. Having an SSD for booting would be the first consideration in regard of storage. Since you already have hard drives as well, check out their capacities and ask yourself whether they would be sufficient for future use. There have already been lots of 4K contents that may not be missed out, but require a lot of storage.
You may also consider which types of files to be stored. For re-downloadable media, a RAID disk array may not be required, and Just a Bunch of Disks (JBoD) can be implemented to arrange all drives as a single pool. For critical & valued data, however, you may consider other options like a RAID 1 (Mirrored) array, another pool for redundancy, and a cloud backup. In any case, these software would be handled by this machine pretty well, but would have pros & cons. It depends on your choice, but remember: just have fun with it, do not panic.😉

That system is plenty for a starter server.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of Proxmox and virtual machines, but bare metal Linux with Docker will be just fine. It's possible to run everything in Docker through Windows, I would say it really comes down to what you feel like running.

A lot of people I know like Jellyfin over Plex these days. I haven't cast my lot in with either one yet, but have used Plex in the past.

Gigabyte, Asus, and MSI seemed to be the main ones, but I wouldn't imagine uncore memclk ratios would be relevant in any way, if all you want is ECC support.

There are lots of PCIe devices built into your board, like network controllers. PCIe doesn't mean it goes in a slot.

Look up the device ID, google it and that can help tell you what it is.

To be fair, most of the time RAM isn't that much cheaper on the used market compared to just buying new that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to buy used. Most of the kits I've gotten used were either high end offerings or bought in bulk, so there was a fair bit of headroom in the price and therefore made sense. For most consumer kits though, it doesn't make all that much sense.

I know people have gotten 500GB+ of RAM to work on boards like the SR2. Most X58 boards AFAIK will work with registered memory if you have a Xeon installed. If your goal is RAM overclocking though, registered DIMMs do not go that far, so you might as well stick to unbuffered DIMMs unless you really need the capacity.

Based on my internet searching, I'm not yet convinced that it does work.

That may not be a server board, but Intel's HEDT platforms have always been very close to being server platforms, except for a few minor details in chipset features. Numerous X58 boards are reported to have BIOS updates that add ECC support, but no Core i7(that I'm aware of) has ever supported ECC, and the i7-975 in question certainly does not.

I buy most of my PC parts secondhand, haven't ran into many problems.

I would keep an eye on ECC vs non-ECC. Typically ECC RAM will work in non-ECC mode with motherboards and CPUs that don't support ECC, but that's not a guarantee.

*Unbuffered ECC will work in non-ECC mode. If it's registered memory like the cheap ECC you'll find on eBay, it won't work on a consumer CPU.

2nd hand RAM is fine, pretty sure every single kit I have in my house right now is second hand to some degree, and they all work fine.

That kit is registered memory, and therefore will not function with a 13600K.

Most of the time a computer requires DIMM slot A1 to POST, even servers. If that's not populated, then I would, otherwise if that slot is damaged, then its potentially a terminal fault. If you Google the server and/or motherboard model, you can find a manual for it.

I had to do this recently with an old X58 server that no longer POSTed after a RAM upgrade.

Apple is no longer a "computer company", but they still make computers.  Even though iPod, iPad, then iPhone blew up Apple's revenue.

It's hard to pass up on a side business even if it's only a few billion a year.  Think of it as training for new engineers before they get to work with the AI teams if they are good enough.

If you already have Windows 7 downloaded you can just put it onto a USB drive with something like Rufus, and as long as the computer supports it you should be able to boot from it. That machine is quite a bit newer than Windows 7 though, so it might not have drivers available for everything. Windows 10 is better on that machine.

Crunchy Dragon got a reaction from KENZY9 in Is 32gb ram the sweetspot now?
Most everyone you see on Reddit is an enthusiast, and a good number of people here are power users in some way. Both of these circles will usually be found running a minimum of 32GB. If you're only gaming and doing some light productivity, you don't really need 32 yet.

RAM is the cheapest and easiest part to upgrade in a PC, so I'd say roll with a 2x8GB kit for now and buy another one when you find yourself needing more than 16GB.

You can install the update without much of an issue, however next time you run a windows update it may try and install the old update again.

Don't worry to much about the "It will remove OEM customizations", I installed the new update on my LG gram 2021, and I haven't had any issues.

I did find a way to disable the auto update with windows. But I'll need to see if I can find the way I did it earlier.
