I can't tell if this is legit or if you're just Microsoft in disguise trying to push Edge... 😄

Tired so this is going to be quite the rambly post. My TFX PSU arrived, literally the cheapest unit I could find with an 8-pin EPS (an old 300W 80+ Bronze Silverstone unit), so I got to mostly finish a project I've been meaning to do for a while:

X99 Micro 2 with an i7 6950X, cooled by an NH-L12S with a 92mm fan zip tied to the underside as a cheapskate's L12 Ghost Edition, 80mm intake and exhaust, WX-2100 for video out. Has the 256GB 960 Evo you can see there, and a 120GB TC Sunbow SSD in the 3.5" slot that's under the ODD because I had it lying around. It's using a 2x 2.5" to 3.5" adapter from IcyDock so I can add a 2nd 2.5" drive later if I want. ODD is a Lite-On unit I got back when I was looking for drives to rip CDs, according to some chart assembled by audiophiles it was like 1% more accurate than most other drives or something at ripping music from CDs, and I wanted to turn the albums I own into FLACs for my iPod Classic. Can't find my low profile PCIe bracket for the WX 2100 so that's currently held in with a ziptie, I have a new bracket on the way as they're only ~$7 shipped.

From the outside, aside from the 2 small nubs from the zip ties holding in the exhaust fan, it just looks like a worn old Vista PC (Chassis is a Dell Inspiron 530S from 2007). That front I/O works too, the front panel header for power button/LEDs are a single block, but use the same pinout as the standard split ones normal cases use, so no issues there. The USB and audio are just normal connectors. Seems basically inaudible so far too, which is rather nice.

And RAM because it's EVGA branded and therefore magically better than any other 4x4GB kit of 2800Mhz DDR4. I'm not sure why they sold RAM, it seems to only be early DDR4 (as I haven't seen a more modern speed kit), and I think there were some DDR3 kits as well.

I still have my 1000W G3 so I'll get... probably my X79 board (an EVGA Dark with a 4930K) up and running again, as my X58 board is XL-ATX and my main rig has stolen the Corsair 750D I got for that purpose. If I end up having the time/energy I need to do a CPU swap on my Mac Pro 1,1 as well. That's also Intel HEDT, an old set of LGA... 771 Xeons I believe. Currently a pair of dual cores, I have a set of quad cores to swap in, so it'll be at 8c/8t, 32GB RAM, and an HD 4870 512MB, not bad for a machine from 2006. EFI flashed to a 2,1 so it will run El Capitan which is mostly usable still, though I should see how running Linux or Windows on it goes.

What are your full specs and what do you use your pc for? If it is doing everything you need now I wouldn’t bother upgrading it at all, just saving for your next build you might want to do.

Crunchy Dragon got a reaction from kirashi in Charging issues with MacBook Pro
There should be an option in Windows to select which GPU to use, unless for some reason it only detects one.

My MBP charging issue was solved with getting a new cable, and I've not tried running Windows on mine.

Yeah, that might be your problem.

I'd honestly just chalk it up to a "Windows on Mac" issue.

I love Lucky Gunner. One of the big things that sets them apart from the rest is their shipping speed.

Be wary of ammoseek. There are some scummier sites out there selling rounds at 2018 prices($0.15-20/round) but charging you 3 arms and all of your legs for shipping.

My go-to places to are PSA, Lucky Gunner, and True Shot.

Rather late with this one, but internals pic of my latest configuration:

Finally got a pic as I was adding in the 140mm exhaust fan, and an 80mm intake under the GPU to try and bring in a little more fresh air, has so far kept it from going into the 80s like it was. The ARC cards are usually cool running, but the main intake is filtered through that 60mm front rad so there wasn't any fresh air for the poor GPU. Also upped the fan speeds overall which I think helped a bit as well.

Mine is also Intel, it's a Core i7.

I also tend to run my laptops on lower brightness and in low power mode when on battery, so that might help get a little bit extra life.

Probably both actually. Being a wood case, it might take more time and resources to actually make, and also makes it very popular among people. I guess all you can do is wait. What country are you in? The Fractal North is in stock at normal price here in Indonesia.

Either hit up the customer service from the manufacturer, or dig up the owner's manual and see if it tells you anything about what kind of power the NAS needs, then try to go source an adapter that meets those specifications.

Are you just using the gpu for encoding? Id just use the intel iGPU. The encoder on that card is pretty powerfully, and does about the same as the 3070. The only reason I see to get a dGPU for encoding is for AV1 with a arc or rtx 4xxx or 7900 card. I'd argue its too early for av1 for most uses, so Id just stick to h.265 for now.

Id probably get 2x 16gb dimms instead of 4x 8.

Crunchy Dragon got a reaction from vertigo220 in Desktop GPU sales hit 20 year low, 42 percent fewer than last year.
My take is that during the pandemic, Nvidia learned that people will buy their GPUs at scalper prices. Because of this, Nvidia increased the price themselves because they figured they could make more money per card without necessarily shipping hardware that justified the higher prices.

I guess people aren't as willing to pay scalper prices as Nvidia thought they were.

Crunchy Dragon got a reaction from ilikememe in New build or new gpu?
I'm skeptical that an i9-9900K will bottleneck a 4090 by 50%. I'm also unwilling to say DDR4 is at the end of its line simply because motherboards and CPUs that support DDR5 are on the market.

OP: I honestly would not recommend buying a 40-series card. Maybe a 4070Ti or 4080 if money isn't an issue for you. If you want a better experience gaming without going crazy, a 3080 on the used market would be a solid upgrade.

You live with black bars for content in 16:9, there's no good way to fill the screen without stretching (and that's hideous)

Enjoy your 21:9 content when it's available, and view 16:9 content as is, you'll get used to it.

Crunchy Dragon got a reaction from kirashi in 10 Years of the LTT Forum
It's crazy to think that I've been watching the channel for nearly 9 years, and been on the forum for just over 6.

Time really does fly. I still remember the first few LTT videos I watched from searching "how to build a computer" on YouTube back in 2014. What's crazier is seeing how far technology has come since then. I've been in the scene long enough to remember when you could buy a 128GB SSD for the same price as a 1TB SSD nowadays.

The channel and company growth has been insane, too. LMG has come a long way from the kitchen set most of us know and love.
    Here's to the future!
