A friend asked me at school today that if I suddenly had $1,500 to build a PC, what would I buy?
My answer surprised him. I told him I wouldn't build a super high-end PC.
See, there's no fun in having a PC do things easily. A high-end system doing things quickly isn't interesting. I like old hardware. Pushing 2, 5, 10 year old hardware to its limits. Making it shine again. Making it top-of-the-line. Having it do things quickly, but not easily.
There's also no story behind new components. You have to create the story. Some may enjoy that, but I don't. I like exploring and continuing the story. That's why I'd buy a used system. Because making old parts shine and adding to the story is fun. There's no enjoyment out of having a generic, brand new, off the shelf PC. There's enjoyment between finding many websites and hunting for the parts you need. There's enjoyment in communicating people, asking them how they used the hardware, and how much they'd part with it for. There's enjoyment in troubleshooting stuff that won't work, and hunting on ancient forums and websites for information on how to make it work. It's way more satisfying to put together a system that was an adventure to build, rather than a LEGO set. And that's why I'd spend it on used hardware.

Not sure if I'll be folding 24/7 but I'm glad to have started. I plan on setting up a dedicated folding rig in the future with my FM2 system so that should be fun.

Typing this update on the lenovo E530 laptop I found at the scrapyard.

okay get ready children, it's story time:

A couple of weeks ago i found a Lenovo thinkpad E530 at the scrap yard and i got it for $5. it had an i3 who-really-cares, one 4GB stick of DDR3, and no HDD. The system did still have a battery that was partially charged, and it booted up into the bios, so I at least knew the laptop worked.

I found an additional 2GB stick of DDR3 from another broken Lenovo laptop also at the scrapyard for $5.

The next week I found a Lite-on 128GB SSD from an HP desktop and an i7-3540m CPU ripped from an old dell laptop.

I had to order a lenovo charger online, because I couldn't find one at the scrapyard. For some reason it took two weeks to come in, which was annoying.

when i got all the parts together I upgraded the laptop from 4 to 6GB of DDR3 from the broken lenovo laptop, the i3 to an i7 from a deal dell laptop, and a lite-on SSD removed from an old HP desktop.

the hard drive bracket for this laptop is actually missing, so I had to hot-glue down the SSD to the laptops HDD bay to the drive doesn't just flap around during use.

Installing windows only took a few minutes. One thing Microsoft does actually get right these days is windows 10 will just install all the drivers for you if you leave the computer on long enough, so that was cool.

I guess you could call this machine "the zombie laptop" since it's built from a bunch of other parts from other laptops and desktops.

I'm giving the laptop to my sister, who doesn't even have a computer. she usually uses her school issued chromebook, and chromebooks aren't great for anything outside of a web browser.

it cost me a total of $25 worth of parts to re-build this machine. Ironically, the charger for this laptop costs more than the laptop itself. i paid $10 for the laptop charger and $5 for the laptop itself.

Benchmarks show that this laptops CPU outperforms my laptops CPU, but my laptop has 16GB of RAM so i think i'll keep my current laptop.

    Other stuff:

i also found an intel DX58SO Motherboard with a ton of bent and one broken pin at the scrapyard. After bending back the pins, the mobo was able to successfully POST, but with only 2 of the 4 RAM slots functioning. Such a shame. At least the motherboard works. X58 is still a pretty mice platform, but this motherboard is effectively capped at 16GB of RAM max because that's all this motherboard can handle now.

I also found an HP Z400 workstation with a Xeon W3520, 8GB of unbuffered ECC and no HDD. I upgraded it to a Xeon X5680 and 32GB of DDR3 and installed a 120GB Samsung SSD and a 1TB HDD. I'm giving that desktop to my dad, who is running a sandy-bridge i3-2100 and a stupid HP oem motherboard with no upgrade path (the i3-2100 is the best CPU that can be installed in that mobo). On paper at least, the Z400 is faster.

$6 shipping to ship $1320 worth of computer processors.

    The buyer received:

    6x Intel I5-4570S
    6x Intel i5-4690S
    2x Intel i5-6600

I bought those CPUs at the scrapyard for a whopping $7.50. They all weighed 1.5 pounds and CPUs are $5 a pound so that's what I paid. This definitely doesn't happen every day. It takes a good 1-2 months for a sale like this to happen.

the employees are now letting me let me sneak out RAM and CPUs every so often even though the owner doesn't want me buying it (the yard owner is never there. He's always out every time I go there.). In exchange I can't tell a single soul about the place and where it is. Today I got lucky and got to buy quite a bit of stuff.

the processors in question are going to a large computer repair shop in California. A ton of computer repair stores buy parts from me all the time.

The stupid thing about these business owners is they ask me "please ship as fast as possible (presumably because a customers PC is waiting to be repaired)! Well then bitch you should've chosen my overnight shipping option. But nobody wants to pay $30 to ship a computer part that costs $50 and I understand. I'm still not gonna pay for express shipping and eat the cost just because you asked nicely. If you select "free shipping" at checkout i'm gonna use Fedex Smartpost and it's gonna take 1-2 weeks (it's the cheapest). Want something faster? Then pay for it you dumbfuck!
