People often don't believe me when I say this, but electric and even gas powered bikes are ridiculously efficient miles-per-gallon of gasoline wise.

Don't believe me? let's do some math:

My old 48v electric bike consumed about 30 watt hours per mile at 20mph of actual movement on flat roads with no pedaling whatsoever. This was measured using my old turnigy watt meter between the battery and the motor controller.

A gallon of E10 gasoline from any gas station has about 33.7 KWh of energy per gallon.

Divide these numbers and...

33,700 / 30 = 1123.3 eMPG.

Yes, over 1000 miles per gallon of gas I can get on a bike like this. You read that right. Go back and check if you still don't believe me.

We did the math as well for my friend who has a gas powered bike. I don't quite remember the conversion factors, but his crappy chinese two-stroke engine bike could get 200-300 mpg. But i'll just be focusing on ebikes for the rest of thes discussion.

So how on earth is it that these bikes get such awesome MPG?

1. An ebike is MUCH lighter than a car. Even though a trek bike with some chinese 1000w kit slapped on it doesn't have nearly as much engineering behind it as something like a honda civic, the bike crushes any modern car in one word: Weight. The heavier something is, the more power is required to continue moving said object at the same speed due to friction, drag and other entropy on the system. An ebike weighs around 50-75 pounds frame and all, and that's 1/80th the weight of a standard two-ton vehicle her in the US, so that gives it a significant advantage.

2. No matter how far the internal combustion engine has come, it will NEVER match the efficiency of pure electric to mechanical energy. The best exposition powered cars out there can still even today only achieve 30-40% conversion effiency. My crappy ebike kit on the other hand? I've measured it to do at least 80% conversion efficiency at all times and even up to 90% after factoring in for regenerative breaking. There is just nothing that beats converting electrical energy directly into mechanical energy rather than needing to go through a complex engine block of moving parts.

There's a guy on youtube named PDXevgrin who has done 10,000 miles on a mountain bike for commuting:

You know how many gallons of gas this dude used for all those 10,000 miles?

Probably somewhere around 10 gallons. The dude rides a 28 mile round trip to and back from work every day, meaning he got roughly 1 to 1.5 years out of this bike so far. That's about a weeks worth of gas for a car, and this dude managed to stretch out that amount of energy for a full year.

Using some napkin math, taking these miles and diving them by 15mpg (a low estimate for the fuel efficiency of an older vehicle that costs roughly the same as this ebike), he would still have to spend almost \$1666 a year in gasoline for the car.

Just imagine for a moment how much less gas we would use if the vast majority of Americans who live under 10 miles from where they work started ebiking instead. A single person could save several hundred, even thousands of gallons of gas a year. It would not only be good for the environment (which who gives a shit about anyway, were all fucked ) but also for your wallet. A \$1000 ebike is considered a "good" bike these days that will last years of 20 mile rides. But a \$1000 car is probably a crappy beater from a few decades ago that will need work.

There's also nothing compared to the feeling of cruising 25mph down a street on a pile of chinese bike parts you didn't even think was gonna work that you built yourself. I would call the feeling equivelant to building your own PC. This is an ebike. There are many like it, but this one is my ebike, and no other ebike will look, ride or perform like mine.  Buying a pre-built just isn't the same.

If all works out, I should have an ebike assembled by the end of march of this year. No promises though (I DO NOT like to promise things) but if everything falls into place, I can do a build log of my ebike. I'll probably post it in the "build logs" section of the forum to mess with people  .

Solution to solve all theft everywhere:

Any theft performed by persons over 18 will be allowed to keep what they have stolen (if caught of course).

Here's the catch...

The person who stole the item must pay the original owner back the money the original owner thinks it was worth. Meaning if the original owner of a convenience store thinks a candy bar was worth \$1000, then that is what the person who stole the candy bar must pay.

If the person cannot pay, they must be slaves to the owner and their labor will serve as payment.

This will never happen, but that would make for some really funny court cases lol.

"yes officer, my peanut the homeless man stole from me is worth \$10 million dollars".
