    Dang.

Last kit I bought was G.Skill Ripjaws V 4x16 DDR4-3200, paid just over $150 USD after taxes and shipping. That lives in my home server, since I could realistically upgrade to 128+GB in the future.

Haven't foreseen myself needing more than 64GB in my workstation before changing platforms, and because I found a really good deal on an 8x8GB kit of Corsair Dominator Platinums, I decided to just send it lol

The 2x 32GB 3200MHz Kingston Fury Beast kit was 155€ and the 4x 16GB version would have been 178€. The cheapest 4x 16GB 3200MHz kit is 162€ Corsair Vengeance LPX.
8x 8GB would have been 192€ for two 4x8 kits or 255€ for the cheapest actual 8x8 kit. I wouldn't want 8x8 anyway because there wouldn't be any room to upgrade, I often had over 60GB RAM usage on my X58 system which has 24GB physical + 120GB SSD for the page file. This time I'd prefer to have enough RAM to not need to constantly wear an SSD with the page file.

This is what the 120GB SSD health looks like after around 4 years of abuse

2x 32GB was cheaper than 4x 16GB and it leaves a bit more room to upgrade if I ever need 256GB RAM

The temps are around 80-85C when pulling 250W on Cinebench. I haven't tried any actual overclocking yet, I've only changed the mesh to 3000MHz and played around with the power limit. With the power limit raised it seems to run at 4.5GHz all-core on non-AVX loads and most cores drop to around 4.2GHz under AVX loads

I finished my X299 build few days ago.

    CPU: Intel Core i9-10900X 10c/20t
    Cooler: DeepCool Assassin III
    Case: Fractal Meshify 2
Memory: 64GB Kingston DDR4 3200MHz (just 2x 32GB in dual channel for now)
Motherboard: Asus TUF X299 Mark 1
Graphics Card: Asus GeForce GTX 1080 Strix Advanced
SSD: 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus (OS and programs)
SSD: 2TB WD Blue SN570 (games)
    HDD: 8TB Seagate Exos 7E10
    Power Supply: Seasonic Focus GX-850
    OS: Windows 10 LTSC 2021

(with a GTX 760 for testing)

GTX 1080 inside the case. The case has a dark tinted glass so pretty much the only visible things are the RGB LEDs on the GPU and motherboard

I'd just get a Faxon gas block of the same gas port spec, but that's just my opinion. Gas tube, just get a milspec one, its designed to be a failure point before the barrel, so getting a crazy high temperature one is somewhat contradictory to its purpose.

You can dimple the barrel for the set screws but you're unlikely to run into an issue if you simply red locktite them with enough torque. I didn't do that for mine since I'd rather not drill into a pencil barrel. Less of a problem with a properly free floated handguard than the time with a front sight block style gas block.

Unless you're planning on a certain suppressor, I'd genuinely just get an A2 birdcage 😄

Crunchy Dragon reacted to seon123 in Can the included 12VHPWR adapter cable with Corsair HX1500i fully use the standard, and communicate with a GPU?
There isn't any fancy communication going on between the PSU and the graphics card. All it is, is different configurations of pins being shorted to ground or not.

The included 12VHPWR cable is not an adapter, it is a native cable, just like the CPU, PCIe and SATA cables are also not adapters.

Most of it is usually the barrel with other variables like the mating face of the receiver. Depending on how 'standard' you go with the parts will depend on how difficult it is to tune.

My DIY InrangeTV WWSD clone rifle took some time to tune, part of the problem was getting a slightly out of spec first batch KP-15 lower. Something about that lower had the takedown pin holes too far forward, something KE Arms fixed by replacing the lower. Wasn't my go-to rifle for a solid year after tuning all the parts, although, every part was non-standard but the gas tube 😄

@Crunchy Dragon Something to keep in mind with Faxon barrels is they like to oversize the gas port. Easily fixed by using an H1 buffer, something you can usually get away with no matter what, but especially important on most Faxon barrels. Supposedly they do it to reliably cycle underpowered ammo, and usually having a slightly larger gas port is A LOT better than a slightly too small one when it comes to reliability. My Faxon 14.5" integral barrel wanting an H1 buffer to not beat the lower up with too high of a bolt velocity.

I owned an M&P AR when they first got to market, sold it at one point to fund other stuff. I built my current AR a few years back, started with a matched Wilson Combat receiver set and picked-out everything over a few months time; It’s much more rewarding to piece something together, and it is more accurate than the factory rifle I had.

Higher power draw does not equate faster death.

As long as a given part is kept under control with regards to power input and cooling, it should run basically forever. Overvolting usually won't pop off resistors on the bottom of a CPU, but it doesn't sound impossible if the motherboard crapped itself and sent entirely too much voltage to the CPU.

I'd be curious to know how much it actually matters to get the highest possible speed out of DDR5, which is already hilariously fast compared to DDR4. I get that it's rated for a certain speed, I'm just wondering how much it matters performance-wise to actually run the rated speed as opposed to whatever the default is for DDR5.

Lightroom loves to eat RAM, so I definitely understand wanting more of it.

Started my first AR build today. It'll come slowly, but I'm piecing together an upper, paycheck by paycheck. Should have it done by the end of the year, or shortly after the new year.

Contrary to what my above post may imply, I'm opting for 5.56 instead of .350 Legend.

In terms of price, it should come out to More Expensive Than My Current Rifle, which is partly why I'm not buying all at once. I also like the idea of having a rifle that I picked all the parts of and assembled myself. Should be fun!

Today I ordered the barrel from our boys at Faxon Firearms because early holiday sales go hard. Not sure what order I'll buy the rest of the parts in, but I'll figure that out.

As for gpu I'd say just send it and get the best you can afford new or used ( for the price of a new 3060ti you can often get quite a bit better stuff used) as long as the psu is good.

Which then brings me to the point. What is the make and model of the psu you have?

As for ram upgrade in the new big games it might be needed however aversly those games will max your cpu easily. So expect to hover at 60 most of the time and hope it's stable. Ark is a optimization mess so that might not happen but who knows 😛

Based on what I've heard, 360mm is mostly needed for the newer Core i9 chips.

I'm rocking a 280mm still on top of an i7-7820X, and it stays pretty cool for being Skylake-X.

My advice is aim for higher end models. My rational is even if they been mined on, beefier cooler can keep the temps under control, limiting die ware. In my particular case, it's also from a Nordic country, where summer never got hot anyway.

And also do a bit research, like the Gigabyte 3080 Aorus Master had bad VRM temps for v1 due to bad thermal pads. But the one I got is v3 which have that issue fixed, I quickly made an offer and was expecting seller go in between mine and theirs' but they accepted my first offer so done deal.

*3080 3090 Aorus  Master seems also rumored to have PCB crack near PCIe slot cracking issue, but I suspect it's because people didn't use GPU support. After all these are some chunky cards... mine take up 3.5 slot while the bracket is only 2 slot. Besides, same issue happens on Asus cards too.

Definitely have to shop around a little.

If I'm looking for a good deal on used hardware, it's not uncommon for me to spend as much as 2 weeks searching around before I find something I'm satisfied with.

There are plenty on Ebay. that said you might have to shop around a little... as it depends on when sellers put them up.
My seller was also kind enough and provided original purchase proof just in case in need of RMA (they bought it during the crypto craze... hope they made up that 500Euro)

Good catch! I do all my 2011-3 tinkering on servers and workstations; they all support registered ECC.

(At least when it comes to cheap used parts. I'm sure you can overclock the snot out of some chips on a good x99 board.)

Be aware of lacking ECC support. Not every X99 board supported ECC memory(even with a Xeon installed). Otherwise, I can't argue with that. Would've done it myself if my board supported it.

This sounds like a saturated network on your ISP side then if its at the same time every night and goes until roughly the same time every night. Nothing you can do unfortunately. This is why ISPs state "UP TO" for speeds.
