Either choice is good.  The K7XX might need an amp, which will bring it closer to the X2 in price, emphasis on might since most onboards should power them sufficiently.

And 3/4 way SLI never were any good for gaming either.  Hence my point being they would rather you buy one of their expensive compute cards rather than ghetto it out with multiple gaming cards.

Well i did say, if you can go open, in your case you can't.  I still wouldn't recommend the M40x, IMO HyperX Cloud (aka Takstar Pro 80) is objectively better, but the M40x is sort of portable so theres that.

HD558s and a Blue Snowball fits your budget.  Another option would be the Phillips SHP9500 with a Boom Pro mic.

Buy a cheap used receiver then if you have the space for it.  Cheap Class-D amps are notorious for high noise floors, as well as clipping and tons of distortion at higher volume.

At the sample rates and bit-depth it runs at, I would hazard a guess that it's a standard Class-2 USB device, meaning you won't need any external drivers unless you need to use ASIO.  I could be wrong though.
