  1. Hi. Today I followed this guide on how to set up a pi as an access point with the intention of just connecting to the pi from my computer over ssh/vnc an so forth. I used my MacBook over VNC to set it up and had a victorious moment when I finished and my MacBook connected to it. However neither my Desktop(Kinda the reason I want this to work) Nor my phone are able to connect. I can see the network and enter password and such but when I try to connect it trys for about a minute then fails. Anyone have any idea? Update : cant connect over ethernet either
  2. I have an MSI MAG b550 Mortar WIFI and the other day audio inputs and outputs in both Windows and Linux(Mint 20.1 if it matters) vanished, thus not a driver issue. Digital audio still shows as an output although i have not tried it and both HDMI and Bluetooth audio work, however front and rear jacks both in and out have gone missing. I've tried BIOS updates, enabling and disabling onboard audio, rebuilding the system on a box, however symptoms remain. I don't know if the tool works but in the bios there is a tool that shows you what ports are connected and disconnected and those jacks do not show connections. device still appears under "lspci" and has drivers its just not detecting connections. Edit : alsamixer shows all inputs and outputs yet they dont work. Could this be bugged detection?
  3. Came home from college for break to discover my family's wifi router has degraded in performance. Ethernet is still pulling the full 110MB/s that we used to get but i can barely get 1MB/s out of the 2.4ghz wifi. ive tried changing network name to make sure no devices were sucking up the connection, and changing the channel to a less congested one, but the problem persists. I tried the 5ghz channel and that is getting 10MB/s with just my one device. I cant play games and im desperate... help... edit: for clarity when i changed the name i ran a speed test with just my phone connected and it was still at just under 3MB/s. Im sure i was the only device on the network as that is what airport utility was saying at the time.
  4. would something like this be smarter https://www.ebay.com/itm/THERMALTAKE-SMART-600W-SP-600AH2NKW-ATX12V-EPS12V-DESKTOP-POWER-SUPPLY-PSU/123973231229?hash=item1cdd61627d%3Ag%3AU0kAAOSwhBFdysmt&LH_ItemCondition=3000#viTabs_0
  5. this is my old unit for anyone wondering https://brainerd.craigslist.org/sop/d/baxter-thermaltake-430w-psu-power-supply/7022852915.html
  6. i found PhysX being an advertised use funny AMD Phenom ii x6 1055t ASRock 890x pro 3 EVGA (i think) gtx 960 FTW and some random 2.5in hard drive i had lying around
  7. so my pc is currently running on the edge of its 430w power supply (previous owner jumped the 6 pin pci plug to an 8 pin for the GPU) and i would like to do some overclocking to give this machine some life. so i realize i need a new power supply but im on a very tight budget and i don't use this system enough to warrant spending alot on parts. so i went to the used markets and found https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/csw/sop/d/victoria-bfg-1000-watt-power-supply/7022102404.html which ive heard of the brand once on an LTT scrapyard wars lol. Should i get it as the wattage rating is way more then i need even if the unit isn't the best or should i avoid it like the plague.
  8. well its more the fact that the drivers don't exist rather then the hardware but none the less i got it going now. thanks y'all for the help as its my first pc and may be the start of my switch from macOS. After my battle with macOS just to make a install usb for windows (ended up just making a linux drive then using that to make the windows drive) i feel i might just stay with windows instead of switching back and forth.
  9. When i first booted into BIOS and saw the speck list i was shocked it didn't natively support Windows 10. Its kinda funny because i don't own a computer newer then 2013 and my daily drivers an 09 mac pro.
  10. So someone gave me an old system (actually my first non macOS system) and it didn't have any drives in it. Luckily i had an old drive lying around but it dosent have an operating system installed. The system has an AMD Phenom X6 1055t installed in a ASRock 890GM Pro3 board and 16gb of Ram and i've been told this system can only go to windows 7. Is this true and if it is why?
  11. The audio for Bluetooth is on WiFi? My Bluetooth earbuds did work normally.
  12. I just got Bluetooth working but nothing else. Is Bluetooth on a separate chip?
  13. so... i plugged my 2013 MacBook pro into a mixer and left phantom power on. It caused a spark while plugging in the jack and now all my audio outputs and inputs including internal speakers and headphone jack have disappeared from not just system settings but audio MIDI as well. Did i just kill my MacBook or is this a software issue?
  14. is there any way to flash the card in macOS? I'm starting to revisit the idea and if i can't do it by myself i have a friend who might have me upgrade his GPU so i would have a PC around for a few days.
  15. the computer itself works its just memory slots 1-4 that don't work anymore. all of these belong to CPU A (dual socket system) so i wonder if i got a bad CPU (should i ask for a partial refund?)
  16. so i have a flashed 2009 mac pro. i have been slowly upgradeing it with the final upgrade being cpus. i had 48gb of ram (6x8gb dims of Samsung M393B1K70BH1-CF8 ECC 1066mhz ddr3) but after i put in my cpus, which involved 2 days of fighting it since it was just refusing to POST with my 8gb dims and thinking my processor board was dead, I'm now left with all of my memory slots on cpu A not working and my 8gb dims causing my system to fail POST even with my old CPUs. i would be kinda fine with it but right now im stuck with my old all 4 of my 2gb dims in my only 4 working slots. my only theory is i somehow damaged the Northbridge when i repasted it and fried my 8gb dims as they won't work in my 09 Xserve UPDATE: i realized the ram i was having trouble was non ECC so i pulled out my ECC and the ram works. so now my only problem is the dead memory channels on CPU A
  17. he gave me a video of the internals but he dosen't know what a power supply or a graphics card is. his card didn't have any pci power and his power supply is in a basement but as its a pre built i doubt they would have put extra cables and capacity if they weren't going to use it from the factory.
  18. sorry forgot to stay. Its a FX 6300. all i know is its 6 core
  19. i'm helping a friend upgrade his "gaming" pc by replacing his suffering R7-240. He's on a tight budget <$100 but is fine getting something used. i haven't seen his rig in person yet but as its a prebuilt i doubt it has PCI power connectors and i don't think it could handle adapting as it was a cheep pc so i'm assuming its a cheep power supply. So i'm looking for a good bang for the buck GPU that doesn't require PCI power OR, is it a better option to try to find a cheep power supply that could handle a better GPU and take some money away from the GPU budget? Thanks
  20. I forgot about this. would this also be able to take advantage of my CPUs and the army of weak GPUs simultaneously or just one of them. i have dual quad cores at 2.26ghz
  21. Sooooo... i have a 2009 xserve in my basement with rarely anything to do and i have 3 crapy old Gpus consisting of a gt730-2gb, gt120-512mb mac edition, and a mxm gt120 256mb that came with the server. So naturally i though, can i mine with this? i know that i will be lucky to make any profit at all but i'm a tinkerer and love doing ridiculous stuff. An interesting problem I've encountered is the lack of support for GPU mining on mac for cards this old (shocker i know). anyone have any ideas?
  22. My xserve is still up (it’s got a couple weeks of non stop runtime actually) but I was looking for not just better final renders but faster live rendering as well as just quick test renders.
  23. What would be the added benefit of that? The best computer I own is this Mac Pro and building a new pc is a bit out of the picture as that would be far more expensive than just getting higher end components for this machine.
  24. i have an old mac pro that is still got the base 8 core 2.26gh pair of cpus in it. as i do alot of blender work (seemingly the only thing to hit my cpu hard) i was looking at ether a x5677 (8 core, 3.46gh) or and x5680 (12 core 3.3gh). the x5680 has a clear advantage for blender but does cost 2-3 times as much (x5677 pair can be had for $30 vs x5680 pairs are $100). Im on a tight budget so i ether get the 12 core or an SSD to replace the 5200rpm stock drive the machine came with. What do you think?
  25. So I have an old cheese grater Mac Pro with a relatively new sapphire nitro RX580 4gb. As far as I can tell this card is meant for some big overclocks (even though I don’t intend to do so) I was wondering if anyone knows how to how to overclock this card as I can’t boot windows any more due to apple ripping Suport for boot camp on my Mac before I could install windows. Thanks
