I mean your suggested parts look just fine, decent choices for the budget allocated, but are you sure that you're gonna have enough for that?
Next step would be a GPU upgrade, tho that's sadly on more expensive side, at least it's not as bad as it used to be though..

1tb is a third of that price nowadays so you are getting ripped off hard, not like samsung isnt almost always overpriced but this is particularly bad, might aswell go buy yourself an equivalent 2tb like the mushkin tempest, silicon power a80, etc.

You sure there arent any higher power or cheaper units around?

Definitely look for a cheaper aio, or a better one like the liquid freezer ii

    As for intel vs amd

Definitely amd for sff cause their cpus dont draw that much power, intel is only valid when you can get cheap z690 and cheap ddr4 alongside a cheap 13700(f)

It's PCIe 3.0 only, no 4.0. So are the 5500 and 4500 which are usually priced similarly. Only 5600 (non-G) and higher are actually 4.0 capable chips. Other than the PCIe revision, no downside that I know of. I guess the fact that the iGPU will reserve some RAM for itself? Usually an entire 2GB (meaning only 14GB usable by the OS), but you should be able to change that in BIOS if the OEM did their due diligence and enabled that option in the BIOS, I believe some don't. You'd have to google and see if anyone has tested with that specific motherboard.

The 1050 Ti is a faster GPU than the one onboard AMD APUs, so if a non-G, regular 6c chip is available cheaper then go with that. Otherwise looks about the best you can do. I would check the price on the Team Group MP34 1TB in your market as well, if it's cheaper than that WD then it should be a better option. My 1TB one cost me about $50 USD even (the WD looks to be $52 on US market).

Did it come with the oem power supply?
Could be a few things but my first guess is the voltage out of the power supply is too low.
From a quick Google search the input voltage should be 19v but if your supply is lower it might cause issues.
A lot of these external power supply bricks typically output 12v instead of 19v so that is my logic on checking that first.

Yeah you're probably right, while a ultrawide monitor looks pretty cool, its a bit overpowered. I think I'm better off purchasing the two 27" monitors you suggested and spending the money I have left towards a proper docking solution for my MBP and my work notebook

For pure productivity 2 monitors are better than 1 ultrawide. But that being said 1 ultrawide is still much better than your current FHD 24" monitor. But your budget is high enough for either 2 nice 1440p 144Hz monitors or 1 1440p ultrawide with a bit of extra money left over. The choice is up to you.

    I'd go either 2 LG 27GP850-B's or 1 LG 34GP83A-B.

I used to have 2x 1080p. I got my first secondary screen very cheap 2nd hand and used it for 2 years, it was so much convenient.

Then I upgraded my main screen to 1440p and that was a huge upgrade for productivity, the extra screen space easily allowed me to fully use the browser on half the screen and you can also see much more because of more height.

I now use 3x 1440p which is absolutely incredible for productivity.
Unfortunately I can't compare it to ultrawide as I've never used it but I find this setup to be prefect for my use case. I rarely find myself running out of space.

Discord, Steam, Spotify, Blender, Browser, Game, Folders, opened and visible at the same time with no need to switch in between.

I often find 3x 1440p a bit more than I need as I don't need the extra monitor all the time... single Ultrawide would likely suffice most of the time.

In Windows 11 the window management seems to be a lot better if you have UW, in W10, sticking to 2x1440 is better imo as its less of a hassle because the window management is not that good.

You don't really even need more than half of the 1440p for websites since all websites only have extra empty space on the side if you fulscreen them.

FHD doesn't have enough width to half-screen websites without having them to appear in mobile mode and UHD just seems like a waste for that kind of usage imo.

I'm not going to recommend any specific monitor. Honestly, if you don't need any accurate color work done, just grab any 1440p IPS for the lowest price you can find... even 2nd hand if you want to save some money.

    Well, is not it brilliant?
Solder the ssd so that it cannot be replaced and machine is dead once its dead, limit warranty coverage based on TBW, make OS write whole bunch of stuff so that TBW limit is exhausted fast and the ssd is no longer covered by warranty. Sounds like fraud, does not it?

Honestly though - soldered storage is and always was terrible idea, and that's the reason i am personally staying away from many apple stuff nowadays, while i used to like it some time ago...

MoVo reacted to minibois in I want to programm my own "Alexa" (complete newbie).
    Yes.
You'll completely burn yourself out working on such a large project right away.

It may be silly, but the human mind wants accomplishments. Making your own "Amazon Alexa" fully fledged will take thousands of man-hours to fully complete, if you're going to do it on your own. Start with simpler programs.
You can of course work towards an Amazon Alexa like program, but first start with the basic things.

To give you an analogy. If you say you want to paint, you don't say "the first thing I'll paint is the Mona Lisa". No, you first start with the fundamentals like shapes and shading, then go into color theory, anatomy (for facial structure), etc. etc. and then you start painting the Mona Lisa.

Same with creating your own Amazon Alexa. The program in full includes:
    - User input
    - Output
    - Entire algorithm, which needs to be able to change (AI)
    - privacy/data/etc.

first master these, before working on Alexa (plus, there are probably hundreds if not thousands of people working on Alexa, all with their specific professions).

In short; you don't start something with a project you won't see an endgoal from in years. Start with something simpler which teaches you the basics/fundamentals which you can use in larger projects.

I won't put anything directly onto the internet. We have a decently fast home connection with 100mpbs down and 30mbps upload, so I will configure VPN connections for the notebooks and the mobile phones. This was the plan anyways and my router provides a relatively easy service for to securely configure a VPN, including a dynamic dns. But I won't put the home server on the internet.
You're right, that's probably a better option for photo sync and a decent option for document storage as well (my dad wants to move his dropbox to the NAS)
Most likely we'll just use native clients anyways. Our main TV is a new Samsung Smart TV which supports the native Plex app. My brother and I will use the Windows/Mac client and the phones will use the android clients anyways. The only time where I can see transcoding become necessary is for the Chromecast for the home gym tv, but that single stream shouldn't be the with quick sync.

MoVo reacted to Slayer3032 in DIY Family NAS - looking for advice?
Ideally with Plex you're going to try to avoid transcoding in the first place, direct streams generally aren't even noticable when I check the usage on my home server using an old Xeon X5660 that doesn't even have AVX or Quicksync. It's not until you start trying to use clients which don't support the codecs which your media is stored in, like desktop web clients trying to watch HEVC content instead of a client like the Plex Windows app. Make sure to educate everyone to not transcode when possible for the best quality and experience.

I'd look into something like Nextcloud for photo backup, which also has most of the functionality that something like dropbox or google drive do. Running a something that's accessible on the internet though shouldn't be taken lightly, please do consider what should be accessible to the internet and don't just slap DMZ or anything like that onto it. Figuring out what you want this home server to do, and what you plan it to be able to do needs to be considered before you take it from a basic home NAS to a more proper home server. You don't want to have to reformat everything down the road and start over after figuring out you want it to do one new thing and it won't do it, ect.

I'd also second the single 8gb dimm, or the 2x8gb. If you need more VMs in the future 16gb max will be very constraining. You'll easily saturate a gigabit lan long before you saturate your average 3.5" hard drive from the past decade, even my 10+ year old 500gb drives in a ZFS mirror would hit 114MB/s from what I remember.

Depending on your board, you might also want to make sure you even have enough pci-e bandwidth for what you want to do. Some boards are going to disable sata ports if you use nvme drives, you'd also likely want to be looking at a SAS HBA if you're looking at 8 drives which will take up 4 lanes. If you plug all of that into slots that are only connected to the chipset, you'll likely have some issues. It looks like a fairly nice board though and you always have the slots connected to the cpu to utilize, which could be used with pci-e x4 slot to m.2 adapter cards if needed. Intel consumer platforms are pretty constrained in this regard when it comes to anything but tossing a m.2 and a gpu into a board despite having like 3-4 16x slots soldered onto them most of the time.

Edit: I just now saw the line saying you plan to use Unraid, don't even consider 2x4gb lol.

I would recommend a DeskMini A300. I built one for my dad a year ago or so with a 2200G, and it's a pretty solid little thing. It won't fit the stock cooler, so you'll have to get a lower profile cooler. I ended up going for a Noctua L9A. Stick a NVME SSD like a Sabrent Rocket inside, and it'll be a good office PC.

DNS for hostnames works best if you manage dns well, best way to do that is to make windows your dns server.

Can you mount the server by ip? This seems like a dns issue.

Just to see if you like linear, tactile or clicky.

Also are you doing more typing or gaming? Normally linear is better for gaming and the other 2 for typing.

This one looks perfect but it’s €199 euros from Logitech. Dunno if you can get it cheaper elsewhere.

I don't know about Netlify+ Nuxt specifically, but Server Side Rendering usually improves your SEO by quite a bit. A Single Page Application is rendered entirely by the JavaScript execution, which Webcrawlers don't always do. Serving static HTML fixes this constraint and makes it much easier for the webcrawlers to index your site. So since you want to build a blog, I'd recommend you go with Server Side Rendering.

If you're only in the game to make money, I'd argue you're in it for the wrong reasons.

Also, it takes a massive amount of luck to even get popular enough. Even if you're at that point, that thing you created isn't going to set you for life. You have to keep making more things that people want. PSY isn't set for life just because Gangnam Style got so damn popular (in fact, I think the viewership basically leveled off).  Or the alternative is take the money you made and throw it into something that will grow.

Either way, if you want to make money, you're going to have to work at it.

It doesn't really matter. You're not going to run a full simulation or a full training on your local machine anyways, at least not, if your doing this professionally. My company for example usually uses Azure GPU instances for training ML models. They have a lot more horsepower than the individual machines of the employees and can be shared between them, this makes them a lot more cost efficient than buying a huge workstation for each employee. Most people in our department actually don't even have a very powerful notebook, since all the resource intensive processing is offloaded to the cloud.

Discord is an alternative to Teamspeak, it's actually pretty cool.
@Bill_Shill To reliably show the content of the forum inside a native iOS application, you'd need something like a rest API. Something that the LTT forum doesn't offer. To send notifications reliably you'd need a lot of server-side logic, you can't just use Swift for that.

And as LMG already stated and I totally agree with that: The web version of the forum is already pretty good! So why would you waste your time and build an app for something, which is already pretty good?
