  1. From my understanding its not like simple load balancing solution with a simple box In Barnacules case I assume you refer to this video: This is load balancing and can stack depending on the traffic to give you a total increase in speed (normally only if the traffic works with multiple threads/connections). However this box Linus reviews works differently, It is basically like a VPN client box that creates 2 VPN connections via each internet connection to a VPN server hosted in a local data centre. It then aggregates the packets on the fly from each connection and presents itself as a single WAN interface you can then hook up a router to your IP address becomes the IP assigned to you by the VPN server in the data centre. I hope that makes sense.
  2. This is a great product and I know of people to have used similar to get great results. The problem is the underlining tech needs to be a sufficient level at a given location to have a benefit. To give you an idea on what I mean I am in Australia metro approx 10min drive and 7km from the CBD in Perth and there are similar types of products available, but I can't really use them in my business. Firstly because of where my office is located the only fixed line internet I can get at a reasonable price is ADSL2+ through a RIM. I could get say 2 of these or 3 of these connections(I am told there is no more ports in the RIM for further connections though) but my upload speed would still only be 2 or 3mbit bonded as each ADSL2+ Connection would only add 1mbit upload. (Given they are on a RIM as well it's all a resold services that could be congested at that point). In my efforts to get a faster upload speed I have looked at options like EOC which is basically bonded copper lines (we are too far for the actual exchange for this to work, multiple ISP's told me they just couldn't guarantee the connection no matter how many lines used) I have tried fiber quotes and the cost for the install is lets just say stupid and only then the cheapest 10mbit/10mibt link would cost approx $1200AUD per month(this does not included the install cost). I would basically loose approx half my download speed which is currently 18Mbit to gain in the upload speed for a silly install cost. The silliness of this is my other office (about 80 Km south from the Perth CBD) has a Fiber connection that is 100Mbit/40mbit(I can get 100/100 or 200/100 there if I want for not much more) and it costs $90 per month. To add insult to this less than 1 km away from my office, homes can get 100/40mbit for the same $80-90 AUD per month. Yet my mobile phone can download/upload into the 100's of Mbit per second but the data allowance of any mobile plans in Aus that don't restrict the uploads to 1mbit is unworkable. I literally have no choice but to deal with it and wait until an ISP has some service I can access that isn't silly money and can be factored into the business cost. I wish there was VDSL or some tech similar to bond to effectively get a workable solution like Linus has at home but sadly I am out of options. Still great video and I do like what this means for in-between connections.
  3. Hi All I have been thinking about consolidating my computer hardware to be more efficient. To give you an idea I have My current Desktop PC setup as a Plex server as well as Storage location on the network. When I was using my desktop most days/nights it was never really an issue as I leave the PC on all the time. However I am using it less and less and mainly access the internet on my phone/tablet or laptop more and more. Being that it is a gaming PC its not the most power efficient setup and what I really want to do is remove the HDD's from this PC and then have a dedicated / low power box or router or media server etc... that will replace the functions that I really need on 24/7. In summary Plex/NAS/Some light dev web server/maybe torrent every now and then. I will then move my gaming and general PC use to my laptop 100%. With this I have no idea where to start and want to try and minimize costs for this so that I can spend more on a new gaming/work Laptop. Key things: Plex server that can work with 1 HD stream at least but good if it could do 2x streams at once. (My Living room TV has a PS4 on it and I use my tablet/laptop for Plex as well though not often at the same time) NAS that is fast enough to store music/movies on for said Plex server but also access/backup files from laptops/pc's around the house. Needs to be a small and as power efficient as possible. Like to have the ability to have a light web-server for testing sites on or just general playing around (can live without this part) Possible torrent server for the occasional file I need to get via this method. (can live without this part) Hardware I already have and plan to re-use: 3x 1TB HDD (Current Plex/photos/general shared Files) 1x 2TB 3.5 USB3 HDD (Current Overflow of Plex shared Files) 1x 1TB 2.5 USB3 (Current Main backup of essential files not accessed directly often only back ups once at week at the moment) Netgear R7000 Router (Happy to Flash to custom firmware) What I want to know if it's possible; can I Flash my Netgear to a custom firmware so it can handle Plex/light server duties duties(can put the a 32GB USB Stick for the basic's/storage) ? then maybe have a small cheap NAS or USB3 Enclosure that can just act as a storage location for the network and the plex server to access files ??? (3x 1TB drives as storage with maybe taking the 2TB drive out and into this box). I don't believe I need raid as the key files that I care about are backed up to the 1TB drive + Google Drive Sync on my laptop/PC's. Can you help me with suggestions that are not really going to cost much??? and I am up for buying a 1-2 new 2TB+ HDD's to replace the 1TB ones plus some sort of cheap NAS/USB3 Enclosure. I know in 1 year or so I will max out my my current storage so happy to at least plan for the new drives/replacements for when this happens. Thoughts suggestions appreciated Cheers
  4. I was thinking this could be entertaining but also interesting is... Only smart phones to complete a review. Video's recorded on phones Video's edited on phones Make it about the productivity/content that can be achieved with just a phone. I have been thinking with tech becoming more portable everyday people are shifting to do more and more of there work only on a phone. I would be really interested to see if someone with only a smart phone and good internet connection could still produce great content from go to upload. Cheers
