This is just really interesting to me for some reason.

Any chance you have a picture of it in whatever rig it belongs too?

    Update:

    I replaced all my 2.5" 500G WD blacks with 2.5" 1TB Reds.

I'll definitely look into the settings on my router next since it seems like that's where a lot of problems are coming from.

Also, as far as speed go, my real-world performance seems a lot better! Transferring media back and forth from an SSD I'm seeing closer to 70-80 MB/s with it peaking just above 100 MB/s from time to time. Are your numbers from iperf or what you're actually seeing?

Some routers let you configure at which speed the ports will run at, maybe that's it.

57-58 MB/s is definitely an improvement, but I would have liked to see those numbers in the 80-90MB/s range. With you running Software RAID, the CPU obviously needs to do a lot more calculations before storing the data, but with 6 cores I would have thought it to have performed a lot better.
With my server, I'm able to get the maximum speed from gig-e, ~120MB/s read/write...But I'm running hwRD and I also built the array with maximum speed in mind. Have a look in my sig if you want some more info.

RAID 6, compared to RAID 5, has no performance differences. The only difference between the 2, is that you sacrifice a second drive for parity, instead of just 1. The 2nd drive gives you room for up to 2 drives to fail without data loss. RAID 6 still has the same penalty to writes that RAID 5 has.

I'm not sure if this is entirely relevant, but doesn't RaidZ need 1GB of ECC memory per TB of storage? I don't beleive that would impact your speed at all. But maybe???

What kind of laptop do you have? Does it have gig-e?
One of my buddies made this mistake a while ago. He had a 12 disk raid 6 setup with 2TB drives. He was using new 2TB drives with 4k sector sizes. He found an old 2TB drive laying around his house and tossed it in his array and expanded. After the expansion he was getting HORRENDOUS speeds. Turns out the drive he put in the array had 512byte sector sizes. He removed the drive and replaced it with a 4k sector count and his problem went away.

With you using all new WD Reds, I don't beleive that this affects you in anyway..but as it is, I'm kinda out of ideas

Got it to 3.8Ghz pretty easily and now it sits in my HTPC running pretty much 24/7 though it can get a bit toasty. Considering the chip was only $10 shipped on eBay and I got a pretty decent A-Bit board to go with it I'm quite happy. LGA775 is still very capable in my eyes, and I think for most people it can still be more than enough power. Plus overclocking the hell out of some old hardware is always entertaining.

Well, if you think of it from this perspective:
If you can't afford a 27" 1440p monitor, why go two 970s? Drop one of them and you can afford a single monitor, save up $100 at another point and grab a second 970 when you can afford it? I have a GTX 680 4GB and it is plenty for my 1440p monitor so far.

Do you really need a Caviar Black for storage if you're using an SSD? Could drop that down to a slightly cheaper WD Blue or Barracuda

If you don't plan on going three-way SLI (I wouldn't), a 750W power supply is more than enough

Cutting corners here and there shouldn't affect your overall performance or reliability, but every little bit saved counts when you're on a budget. Removing things like the Dominator RAM kit would also save money, but that's an aesthetic choice so that's up to you. Either way, you can go down from 2133 to 1600; you won't see any performance difference.

Personally I'm not a fan of AIO water loops anymore, but that is also an aesthetic choice - certain air coolers will be just as effective for cheaper.

Peripherals are a personal choice, but if you want to purchase a new 2560x1440 resolution monitor, you can either go the old QNIX QX2710 Korean for <$400 (I would debezel it and apply my own custom bezels/mounts), or if you want something with a better stand an Asus PB278Q would be nice. There are also Korean monitors you can get that have excellent IPS 2560x1440 100-120Hz displays.

Hi, welcome to my guide for LGA775 overclocking!

I felt like writing this guide because LGA775 can still be a capable platform, plus overclocking is fun. I also see a fair amount of misinformation about LGA775 and overclocking (e.g. they aren't unlocked so can't be overclocked.) So I just felt like putting a guide out there for those interested in doing it, or for those who just want to learn a thing or two.

Let's start off with some basic terminology that you'll use when overclocking, some of this may be specific to LGA775.

    Some basic maths:

Motherboard chipsets and how they compare:

So now to the actual overclocking, you'll need to target a desired clock speed. I'll list some common Intel CPUs and some average overclocks.

    Recommended voltages:

Thanks for giving this a read

Feel free to post your results and some benchmarks!

I asked them about it when I was down there for Mod24. I don't think they're bringing it back.

Maybe we could talk to G8 about an LTT one or something though?

I didn't know that. More of an Nvidia guy myself.

The 750Ti consumes around 35W~ of power and gives upwards of 40k PPD. The 7970 consumes around 200W and gives only 130k PPD~. By doing the math you the 750Ti and 7970 get 1.1k/watt and 0.65k/watt, respectively. Of course, this all depends on who's paying the power bill. For me efficiency is important and it's just not worth running older hardware. Another thing to take into consideration is the heat. Less efficiency obviously equals more heat and less points.

I know the 780Ti scales almost perfectly when compared to the 750Ti. 200W for over 200k PPD, or 1k/watt.

For the power bill let's say hypothetically you pay $150 for a 7970 and are getting 0.65k/watt while running 24/7. A used 780Ti on the other hand you can pick up for used for around $400 (at least where I live). Within a month you've payed in power $14 for the 7970 and earned 3.9m points. If you chose you go with the 780Ti you'd pay almost the same price in power but get 6m points. I guess you just have to look at your priorities.

    Anyways, just my two cents.

I ordered mine from G8 sometime last year after seeing them on the Nvidia store. The shipping took forever but I did end up with one after a few emails back and forth between their CEO. He was nice enough to send me their LAN bag for free which now houses my extra keyboards. The G8 eSports Hoodie is essentially the same thing minus the Nvidia branding. If anyone's curious though I really like both sweatshirts I've gotten from G8. They're very comfy and surprisingly warm without feeling very thick.
