That's interesting. That's more reason to never use an Android device for any daily-driver device. That's all you need is the 2FA apps leaking from a bad OS. Probably less of an issue if you have an older device that is offline and only used for doing things on the device itself (like reading books.)

Anyway, I feel that people like to perpetuate a myth about security by pointing to an OS and go "seee, they bad" but conveniently ignore it when it happens to their own device's OS. This is especially bad when comparing desktop OS's. Remember the myth about Mac's don't get viruses, that is still perpetuated to this day.

What is factually true is that developers sometimes make mistakes. Somehow Android vendors either keep making them, or fake "patching" their devices for some reason that I can only assume has to do with flaws in how Android vendors don't run the same copy of Android on all their devices due to different hardware, and less due to carelessness.

If you've ever seen source code fly by on Linux during a compilations stage you'll typically see lots of "skipped" or "warnings" that get silently ignored, and it's possible that the way the security patches get applied to source code probably hard-fail, and whatever the process is that packages them probably updates the patch notes/version without actually checking that the patch was applied.

@RejZoR I don't think people mean by a locked down ecosystem that you can't use whatever services you want (and if they do then they're blatantly wrong). The main way that's true is that switching devices between platforms is an ordeal, but that's as much Google's fault as Apples. However, there are also various places where Apple tries to push you into using their services but, as you say, they're never forced.

But even that isn't the actual problem. The actual problem is a few places in the OS and hardware design where Apple just says "f*ck you, you do it our way or no way".

For example, backups. I don't want crap about how iCloud is amazing and keeps everything working seemlessly. I know all of that already. But why is it that I can't just plug an iPhone into my PC and pull off the data? And why can't I put in an SD card? And why aren't you using a USB-C connector when single other high-end device does? (Even if it is rumoured on the new ones, they are incredibly late to the party)

Also, why can't I rearrange icons on the home screen to the bottom? Why no searching on the T-9 keypad? I know not everyone uses it, but still - they are tiny, simple creature comforts which some people enjoy, and which detract NOTHING from the overall experience and a trillion dollar company can't add them to their product? Really?

Indeed I don't actually think iPhones themselves are terrible, and if someone has the money and genuinely prefers an iPhone (iPhones are more idiot-proof too so better for those unfamiliar with the technology as well) then I have no issue recommending one. It's the attitude of the company that pisses me off.

In fact, I might even buy an iPhone for my next device, if there is a suitable one, but even the current SE is more than I have ever spent on a phone before. There are some things I love about the iPhone. But equally there are some things every day that an iPhone doesn't do that I can't do. And if Android does what you want then there is no reason to switch to iPhone, given the costs you have to pay, both literally and figuratively.

AMD was doing that only yesterday, they all do it unfortunately.  The real problem is that companies have to employ marketers to market their wares.  if they employed honest people they would only sell products when they actually had the best and cheapest product that came with a free fountain of youth.

Here is a thready reminder than the ban on Huawei is NOT about "we need to protect ourselves from Chinese spying". Right now there is 0 evidence of Huawei networking equipment being backdoored.
The real reason for the Huawei bans can be found in this news article.
    https://www.smh.com.au/world/europe/it-would-be-an-issue-malcolm-turnbull-intervenes-in-uk-s-huawei-debate-20200114-p53ric.html

Yes that is correct. Australia is not banning Huawei because they are scared of Chinese spying. They are banning Huawei because they are deemed too secure and it would prevent national intelligence agencies from doing wiretapping.

The UK were also threatened to be kicked out of 5 eyes if they went with Huawei.

The reason for Huawei bans aren't that they are a Chinese company and would allow China to spy on other counties. It's the exact opposite in fact. If countries start using Chinese equipment it will become harder for agencies like the NSA and other 5 eyes countries to spy and xolle t data on each others' citizens.
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes

Don't buy into the xenophobic anti-china bullshit that is being spread by counties which have time and time again shown that their primary goals are to collect as much data on their own citizens as possible. These Huawei bans are coming from the same agencies that were literally caught hijacking transports of networking equipment to solder on additional chips which allowed wiretapping inside switches and routers. Cisco even started sending packages to deserted addresses in an attempt to try and not have their transports intercepted by US state agencies.

Yes, calling gaming "real world application" for 10-16 cores CPUs is twisting.

It's kind of reverse, though: you pointed at the one thing ("gaming", an average of whatever they tested on that department) the 10900K is faster. There was no other benchmark in OP that aligned with that - and also no high clock CPU with fewer cores from any of the companies, which would again defeat all these CPUs in real worldTM (a.k.a., gaming).
Of course, one could also construct a different benchmark leading to such a result (relevance would be a different story)-

That is a strange argument to bring up when trying to argue for a 10-core chip. You are basically saying people should get an 8700K, which maybe they should, but that's not an "AMD vs. Intel" question as you are making it to be.
If I'm not building a server, I don't need a Xeon or Epyc; saying that a benchmark comparing Xeons and Epycs at server tasks is useless because "most people are not running servers", then jumping from the specific models tested to "brand X is better at..." is just... do I want to say fanboyism? Flamewarism? I don't know how to call it, but it's not cold logic, and it is shoehorning a product review into a brand debate.
Is Nvidia better for gaming? Well, if you are getting a GT 1030 then no, it's not. There will be products from all brands interlocked in any performance ranking (whether real worldTM or not).

That chipset uses way less power than you think, people have tested it with no heatsink at all. It's so not needed that a lot of boards got BIOS updates that allow you to select silent mode for it and you'll never hear it again ever, unless you go with 2x M.2 NVMe RAID 0 off the chipset but who is actually doing that.

You don't have to go that high, mid ~$350 you can get these (not 10G).

I mean... If I recall; AMD's promise of support through 2020 wasn't for a specific chipset, it was for the AM4 socket. As far as I can see, B550 is still going to be AM4, it's just going to have the necessary bells and whistles to support the new gear.

I'm willing to bet that board vendors will at some point play with their BIOS enough to get support out on certain B450 boards, just like they did with select B350 boards, which are managing to work with Zen 2 chips. But as you stated, that's more in the court of the board vendors than AMD, and will depend on the need to deplete B450 stock.

Well part of it is the problem that we all still think in the 'Intel ways'. This is also why Intel does prefer to change the socket so it can't be confused.

I do think back in 2016 AMD had every intention for every chipset to support all architectures on AM4, even if not all processors but at least most of them. But back in 2016 AMD still had a bad rep and board vendors were still very weary of putting money in to a platform with no proof it was actually going to sell well and zero brand reputation to back it. So you make it cheap to lower your risk and with how busy AMD would have been I would find it very hard to believe they would micro manage board partners down to the BIOS chip size, that's not their wheelhouse.

Now that we know it's a problem and everyone's gone 'oh shit' there is little that can be done. Lets also not forget about the problems AMD had giving support during Ryzen 3000 launch for chipsets that were intended to be not supported but board vendors insisted on providing support so AMD backed that. This forced AMD in to a position of supporting their CPU customers that had product combinations that didn't actually work, Ryzen 3000 CPU upgrade kits for free. This was likely a logistical nightmare and very costly too.

    https://www.extremetech.com/computing/295027-amd-will-provide-a-free-temporary-uefi-upgrade-kit-for-ryzen-3000-motherboard-updates

This is why it baffles me how easy everyone forgot about these problems during the Ryzen 3000 launch, it was a huge damn problem.

Somtimes your partners let you down and there is nothing you can do about it, sometimes you don't know they have until years later. You just have to do the best you can with the situation, if that means the same as Ryzen 3000 situation or no support at all then that is what it is. Go bitch to board vendors for having no faith during a time when there was no warrant for them to, because FX did them no favors.

XenosTech reacted to leadeater in The three major HDD manufacturers are selling slower drives, without telling us
Kind of but it shouldn't cause a rebuild to actually fail. The RAID system, either software or hardware, controls the I/O and issues the commands so if a disk slows down the other disks won't actually care or need to do anything. Rebuilding will happen at the rate of the slowest piece in the chain, slow doesn't cause failure.

The disks start off in a high performance state and as the PMR zone fills up you then have to start relying on the firmware of the disk to actually work properly and handle that situation. Once the PMR zone is full it should be going in to passthrough or direct write SMR mode which is slow as shit, usually like 30MB/s to 40 MB/s, but stay operational and responding to I/O commands. These WD Reds are not staying operational, they go in to some weird ass pending state and just stop reporting anything at all while it's trying to cleanup the PMR zone, that's not normal. This is why RAID systems have a shit fit because the disk stops responding, that's a firmware issue.

XenosTech reacted to leadeater in The three major HDD manufacturers are selling slower drives, without telling us
And how long do you think SMR technology has actually been around for? How long do you think it takes for a new technology to get deployed in to a product stack? It isn't some random coincidence that it's been making it's way in to disks at the consumer level since around mid/late 2018.

And of course it's a cost saving measure, it's also primarily and why it got developed a capacity increase measure for enterprise. You really think consumer workloads is a driving factor in HDD development for the last 10 years? No it is not.

A 2TB drive may not need SMR however you're forgetting that a 2TB SMR drive has less platters in it thus Seagate can produce more disk of all sizes if more disks use less platters if they don't need them. So a 2TB drive using SMR allows Seagate to sell more disks without having to increase the production rate of drive platters.

Demand of disks is actually still very high which keeps cost high, there is still a price minimum but disks over 4TB aren't at that but they aren't getting cheaper either because of overall market demand, not for 4TB+ specifically but for disks overall and those need to be manufactured. Seagate would rather put platters in to 16TB high margin enterprise disks than your 2TB or 4TB desktop or mid range NAS disk.

Only in large capacity ones and that is intentional due to the large number of platters in large disks which puts stress on the motors and bearings and causes failure, the solution to that is to lower the RPM. That is why WD Black for a really long time did not come in larger capacity sizes, PMR/CMR aerial density needed to increase enough to allow it without adding platters. This is why you still cannot buy a WD Black larger than 6TB, and even that is a more recent addition to that product lineup.

Large capacity 7200 RPM disk do exist but those are all high end enterprise drives and come at a price premium.

There are reasons why products have certain specs, generic statements don't fit well. WD product range is much smaller than Seagate and not all suppliers stock all the Seagate models so unless you go checking product range spec sheets you may have no idea there is actually a disk that ticks all the boxes you want.

I ended up being super lucky.
Sold all my stock and investment funds in November because I need money to buy an apartment. Then when I noticed the stock market plummeting I waited a few days, then bought a bunch of investment funds again for the money I had put away for my Japan trip 2021 (which is probably not happening now).
So far the investment funds have gone up 13%. So it's up about 300 dollars in 1 month.
Me and my SO also decided to have a fixed interest rate on our apartment loan. It ended up being more expensive at the time, but now it feels good to know that our living costs won't go up in the coming 3 years (at the time) no matter what happens with the banks.

I am also lucky that I rejected a job offer a while ago. I work as a consultant at a large consulting and MSP company and one of the clients I often visit offered me a full time employment at their company. I declined the offer and right now it feels good that I did. In Sweden, we have a law which says that if a company has to fire people, they have to fire people based on employment time (except in special cases). What it means is that the longer you have worked at a place, the harder you are to fire. So instead of being the new person at my client (which means, first to get fired) I am now sitting comfortably at my job with several people being employed after me.

Keyword is "lucky". No amount of planning could have put me in a better or worse situation than I am in right now. It was just pure luck. I even made "bad" decisions which turned out to be good. Like deciding "I want to pay more interest on my loan".
