Glad to see other countries are making breakthroughs in chip design and manufacturing.
Ultimately this will contribute to more multipolar world where smaller guys can't just be blackmailed into submission because they chose to develop their own independent foreign policy and find themselves slapped with sanctions from the US and the crowd.

Breakthroughs are done in payment systems as well which will rival SWIFT, Visa and MasterCard - meaning except from technology perspective, it will also be harder to isolate countries by denying them access to SWIFT.

I was hoping for these kind of breakthroughs years ago, I just didn't expect they will be coming so soon.

I think it's mostly due to them trying to be technologically independent from the West, so focus is more on enterprise workload.

I'm in major tech company. Since 2014 we lost some big clients in Russia because they switched to Chinese and Russian brewed tech. I'm convinced is not as effective as our tech but I guess it works for them. They never looked back.

100% government mandated actually, however I doubt government will issue such mandates if tech is not ready.

Obviously it's not on par with our tech, but it seems it does the job.

Yup, and why would they look back? Just to have the rug pulled under them whenever the other side wants?
If anything, the pandemic and the recent sanctions just proved relying only on foreign goods/tech is a huge mistake.

So I recenty got myslef an LTT Crewneck because I was in need of a new one. I had heard all the talk on WAN show about how much goes into the merch and making it worth while to buy. So, I took Linus's word for it and went for it. It came in and the first thing I noticed was how heavy it is. And how good the quality of it was. See, I live in Michigan and especially in the winter time this thing was absolutely amazing. This thing is super warm. It breaks the wind pretty well and the zipper pockets are the absolite best. The only thing i'd say is that I wish there was a different color. An all black one would be awesome. I like the look of the light grey but it's just so easy to stain. And for someone as clumsy as me that can be an issue from time to time.

    Overall I give this thing a 10/10.
It is much bettter than I expected I hope someone on the merch team sees this because the amount of effort you guys put in really shows.

    Summary
Moore Threads, a Chinese chip startup founded in 2020, has unveiled two GPUs which are touted as the first ever to be "based on fully domestic intellectual property and manufacturing expertise". The S60, which is the consumer-oriented SKU of their "MUSA" architecture, reportedly has 8GB of memory and around 6 TFLOPS of raw performance, and was demonstrated capable of running League of Legends at 1080p. The S200 is their server/datacenter SKU with double the cores and four times the vram. No word on availability yet.

Not sure how much I believe that "fully domestic ip" bit, but either way you can bet that Linus will manage to get one somehow.

DaRk0 reacted to dizmo in As ASUS employee warns gamers that AMD 6800XT will be in very limited supply at launch, expected to sell out within minutes.
This news shouldn't be surprising in the least, and anyone thinking AMD would have tons of stock at launch is either new to the space, or has their head so far into AMDs junk they won't see light for days.

There's many more parts to a GPU than there is to a CPU, so it's easier to have stock issues. There's a worldwide pandemic, which can result in supply shortages, difficulty simply shipping the items, as well as drastically increased demand (which in itself is multi pronged, as it accounts for both demand from people being stuck at home, as well as the large increase in performance).

Most GPU launches have had shortages of supply. In the state we're in, it really shouldn't be a shock that it's worse than usual.

Why? It's not like they haven't been building supply in the meantime. They knew their launch date, it's not a surprise to them, and waiting makes absolutely no sense. Just get what you have out the door and to customers. People crying that they can't spend hundreds of their dollars on a luxury item is pathetic.
Funny how you say Nvidia dropped the ball, yet AMD is heading in the same direction. It's simply demand outpacing supply.
IMO it makes absolutely no sense to wait. Just sell what you have.
At least he can cash in on that $10...
Really, though, if he sold the card he needs for work before he had a new one in hand, he deserves what he gets. It's the only way he'll learn.
I mean, if you're looking at higher end competitive AMD cards, it's been what...6? 7 years?
Basically the same premise with drugs.
Attacking the supply is rarely the answer, you have to take away the demand. There will always be supply.

To be expected. AMD does not have a magic stick to prevent bots from placing order or to multiply their stock. Everything they said in regards to that is just a PR nonsense.

lots of people are talking about the tiktok ban but I think the bigger news is the wechat ban. some people think its just a messaging app who cares but its way more than that in china. when people go out to buy groceries in china a lot of the time they dont take their wallet because they can just scan a QR code and pay in wechat. also when they need to pay utility bills etc the companies just request money from them in wechat. having wechat is a huge convenience booster in china and if trump forces apple to remove it from their app store then i expect a huge drop in iphone sales in china

That is really the problem with Ikea isn't it. If it's full wood, metal, glass it might be decent but it often isn't and indeed barely more durable than cardboard (and if it's higher quality it's of course also rather expensive)

I got 2 really old halogen lamps from them... Great design, quality is god damn awful, they both make buzzing sounds constantly plus something that sounds like dripping water lol... Incredible. I don't really use them anymore, but those 2 lamps alone speak a lot of the"quality" of their products...

DaRk0 reacted to CarlBar in Samsung and SK Hynix to permanently stop shipments of NAND and DRAM chips to Huawei
Until the rest of the world gets fed-up anyway. The US simply isn't big enough and important enough outside of the military sphere to make reality what it wants it to be if the rest of the world gets fed-up of it's antics.

The danger here is that US pressure on China, (and by extension the rest of the world), will make everyone start developing their own answers to problems. And that could leave the US out in the cold Needless to say quite a lot of US tech firms would at that point fall apart. Ad that would upend everything.

Yay, and the US continues to throw their weight around to destroy Huawei.

To the people that say "yeah, fuck China" just remember that the precedent has now been set that the US has the power to completely shut out any Tech company because they don't like them, they don't do what they are asked (and therefore just need to claim they are a threat to national security) or pretty much any other reason they like. And their "influence" over foreign companies such as Samsung where they can be bullied into the same line as US companies under threat of their own sanctions, should not be fucking applauded

I think the ban on Huawei has more to do with Huawei becoming a market leader and taking market share from US companies, which the US obviously don't like. If Xiaomi starts becoming a threat (money wise) to US companies then I wouldn't be surprised if they will meet the same faith as Huawei.
Or maybe the smartphone market isn't as important as things like enterprise networking.

I notice a lot of people are commenting on how bland or boring they are.  Which is fine, that's subjective.  But the idea  behind most branding changes these days is not about being flashy, it's just to make it different.  The Idea is to seed the consumer with the belief the product is not the old product and that it is new.   New equals better, new equals not having the same problems as the old.  Flashy can tell consumers we are trying to compete with marketing rather than we are bringing a new product.
