I have just received an HP Z420 and was looking to replace the PSU with a Corsair AX760, so I can have enough connectors to connect up my GPU, 2 x 8 pin. However, the HP power supply and motherboard has a 18 pin motherboard connector. I've had a look online and found lots of adaptors that convert 20 to 18 pin, but i'm not sure on the reliability of these. Another option I have though about is replacing the motherboard to get standard connections and just move the CPU and RAM across. E5-1650 v2 and 64GB DDR3 ECC. Any ideas on the best way of sorting this?

I will try that when I clean out the PC and put the new parts in

Unfortunately not, I got enough money for the other parts but left the motherboard till last, with the plan to upgrade it a few months down the line. That few months then turned to a few years and that is what I am stuck with. But this is what I plan on going to https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/tVcxtJ

I do hope so, I have been running the test all this time and it seems to be ok. Thanks for getting back to me so soon. I should have though about the connector first. But anyway, Thanks again for the help.

Ok, this is weird, I have just disconnected and reconnected the GPU power cables and ... it seems to be working. The GPU test is working and now with a bit of an overclock. The connection looked exactly the same before as after replacing it. So, I don't know if it is coincidence or that was the issue. I hope that was the issue as I am currently saving for a new build and wouldn't like to have to add anymore to that cost.

I might be able to borrow the one out of my brothers PC, but I would have to try that tomorrow. I will do that first thing.

Another update, I have just been running a GPU test and a CPU test without any problems. HOWEVER, as soon as I stopped the CPU test it died again. I tried the same but stopping the GPU test first and it was fine.

I have just lower the power target to 50% and then re-run the test and it works, could there be an issue with the GPU? I slowly ramped the power target up in 5% and as soon as it hit 100% it did the same.

I have just been doing some testing and running the GPU test in EVGA PrecisionX instantly kills it.

My PC has twice now, shutdown then about 10 seconds later shows the American Megatrends bios with a warning about surge protection. Both of these times I was playing Rocket League and it just cut out. I'm not sure if it is the power supply causing issues or if it is the motherboard. Here is a link to my build - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/zs4mQV - if that helps

I see, looking long term, rather then being great in the short term. -

With the i7, do the Hyper threaded core make a lot of difference when in gaming as they are local ones? -

The cost of not putting in an AiO isn't enough to get him to a 1070, its like £100 difference between the cards -

The i5 and the 1070 sounds like a good idea. I have an i5 and it has lasted me well. -
