Just replaced my motherboard and CPU with this : Asrock Asrack Avoton C2750

    8 Core @ 2.4ghz Atom - Avoton
    12 SATA ports on board
I kept my Adaptec 32105 with 12 Ports
2 Intel Gigabit NICs with teaming support or fail over
    1 IPMI management port
    only 3 USB 2.0......
    Passive cooled

went from 210watts to 130watts so its a nice improvement.
I guess the PERC 5i was consuming around 30 watts
Dont feel the difference in speed so that's a good thing!

Running on Windows Server 2012 for now.

    The onboard management is great!
I now have a Total of 24 ports , which is a little low. im going to get an 20+ controller soon

Yes , i would even go 850w , especially since PSU fans and HDD tend to be the loudest parts in the PC . If you get a SSD in the future and set the HDD to turn on only when you use it ( windows advanced power options ) , you'll have a PC that doesn't make a sound  . If you want it to not make a sound even at medium load get the Asus strix 970 because that has the same feature like the PSU , it doesn't turn on unless you get high loads

ok i have started uploading the MOD 24 event minus 5-10 minutes due to me being on the wrong channel its the full 24 (ish) hours, the first 2 parts are low quality but the rest is in 1080-720 depending on stream.
the first part i was on the wrong channel so its only 15 minutes of annoying stuff to put up with, the rest is the dedicated channel so its fine, it will take me awhile to upload them all as they have to be in 10 minute segments so please bare with me, . anyway a couple of you asked for it so here it is, i did ask linus if it was ok to upload and he said to ask Nvidia, they never got back to me, so screw it!.

so sorry for the long topic, but here is part one, will edit this post when the rest are up
and if it doesnt work please try later as the video may still be processing

Alexdaman reacted to keslangus in Gtx 980 144hz monitor user beware
    Hello all!
As the title would suggest, i have found an issue with the new gtx 980 series of cards. It seems both the reference and non reference models are affected (mine personally is a msi gtx 980 gaming edition). After putting the card in today, and letting it settle in i noticed that the card was idling around 52 degrees Celsius, which is way high. my old card (asus gtx 770) with all identical components used to run at about 34 degrees, and nothing had changed with the exception of the card.
So after some head scratching i started to look at the voltage of the card and the clock speed it was idling at 1000+ mhz constantly. so just after doing a hair of research i bumped the settings on windows down to 120hz and the 60hz refresh rate for the monitor. Instantly the temps fell dramatically, down all the way to a cozy 34 degrees Celsius. So just wanted to give a heads up to all of you with 144hz monitors out there. If you are seeing high temps with your 980 its not a bad thermal paste job, or defective card, its the card running balls out all the time when the monitor is set to 144hz. Hope this helps save somebody out there the time and effort i already invested into this lengthy headache.
oh and btw further disclaimer you can set windows to 120hz for the monitor with no thermal issues, however, bump it to 144hz and you will find yourself in the fires of mordor.

well, anyway, that suggests that you have the wake by keyboard and mouse settings in the BIOS set to on.

you can try powercfg -devicedisablewake (device name here)
do that for everything and then do powecfg -devicequery wake_armed again to confirm that you've turned them off.

Im an Optometrist by trade , but everybody is different so take this with a grain of salt .

Some people with a slight form of hypermetropia will get Asthenopia (headaches and eyestrain) after a while.
You will need glasses to restore your vision to a emmetropia (0.00dpt)

it could also be that you have problems with your binocular vision : this means that after a while the 2 images from your eyes lose their fusion , or it takes a lot of brain effort to keep 1 image.
Typical eyestrain will lead to a sore forehead(eye muscles) and at the rearof your head (visual cortex).

Gunnars do reduce glare and offer +0.25dpt diopter in their glasses , (its like reading glasses).

Hoya (lens manufacturer) offers the bluecontrol lenses. Filter out the >380nm light spectrum .

    A burning sensation comes from : .

    - not enough blinking
    - Air conditioning
    - Hay fever .
    - Bad contacts .
    - Bad tear production.
    - bad tear properties .

    in case of contacts :

use contacts with a LOWER water absorption if possible ,

its always better to get personalized advice from your optometrist or eye doctor.

yeah, 2gb's are certainly not enough - Not sure if lowering the texture quality will be enough - It's your money, so you should figure out if it's worth for ya... If your gonna upgrade to gtx880's, and only then can really take advantage of a 4k display.. Maybe you just wonna wait all together, and see what happens with 4k display pricing - you might save a bunch

The most important question here : wich game are we talking about?
I strongly advise against the Titan or Even an amd Card
If you want bang for buck you should wait till fall , the 880gtx and 5930k are comming , along with x99.
Titans arent that much better in gaming then a 780Ti .
    My advise for you:
    I7 4790k devils canyon
Any asus deluxe,ws or repuplic of gamers Z97 motherboard
    Ax1200i
    2x 780ti or even 3x

Hi all, I just signed up today hoping that this wonderful community will help me build my perfect system.

I'm based in the UK, looking for advice on all components and monitor. I'm not too concerned about cost per-se I just want the most bang for buck.

Starting witch graphics cards then, I can find the original Titans for a very reasonable price, would a 4-way SLI Titan run 4k well and at 60fps?

As you can tell, I'm not too clued up really and any/all help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

@MrBucket101 : I've taken the liberty of editing your post a bit to make it conformant
with thread rules. I've also taken one of the pictures you linked and linked it to a smaller
version hosted on my server so that you have at least one pic in your post. If/when you
wish me to remove the image from my server and replace it with your own, please let
me know (I wanted to link the original image you have on dropbox, but it's just too large
and would be annoying for people with smaller screens ).

@Alexdaman : Is the 64 TB box a new machine, or just an update for the server which
is already on the list? If it's a new rig, could you make it a proper post according to
thread rules so that we can add it to the list? If it's an update, I'll just edit the capacity
of the server that's already on the list. Thanks!

If anyone has been forgotten, a quick reminder would be welcomed, I or looney shall then
amend the list with your entries, should they qualify.

I've also added a "Total Combined Storage Capacity" counter, we are currently at 1,137 TB,
meaning we can now call ourselves truthfully the LTT Petabyte Club ™ !

I really hope you're joking. I am getting really sick and tired of this "we don't need more than X" argument that seems popular lately. "It's good enough" is NEVER a reason to stop improving. With that logic, we would still be stuck with single core processors and a few MB of RAM. I strongly disagree that 8Mbps is enough as well and @neon has already said why we need more.

To answer OP's question. I currently use 1Gbps. My NAS and end point devices aren't fast enough to handle more than ~70MBps so I still have some way to go before 1Gbps bottlenecks me.
