"Reset this PC" with multiple drives (2 with windows storage spaces mirror)
ratva replied to ratva's topic in Troubleshooting
Update - worked like a charm - all reset, with files still in place, and this time the driver installs did work as they were meant to. Thanks again for the help! -

Excellent, thank you - I'll go ahead with the reset with all drives connected then! -
"Reset this PC" with multiple drives (2 with windows storage spaces mirror)

Thanks @FakeKGB - so would the configuration where I've set up the Windows storage spaces also be left alone then and not affected (as I would have thought that would be somewhere in the Windows part of the boot drive)? -
tl;dr: should I unplug windows storage space 2-way mirror drives prior to a windows "reset this PC" to prevent any risk of losing data/will I be able to just plug them back in and have the storage spaces recognised? Or is the "keep my files" option safe? Hi all, I wanted to clean up my windows install - I've used my desktop for a number of years, and I think small tweaks here and there have added up. I'm having issues such as windows hello not detecting my camera, and deleting and reinstalling drivers hasn't fixed the issues. That aside - I have a C drive (SSD) as my boot drive, a D drive ("fast" storage HDD) and E drive (Windows storage spaces "Two-way mirror" between 2 slower HDDs). I've got the C drive backed up externally, however I don't have capacity to back up the HDDs externally. So my question is this - can I just unplug the D and E drives before the reset to prevent any risk of losing data? I.e. will I be able to just plug them back in after and have windows recognise the storage spaces without overwriting the data? I imagine this isn't an issue for the D drive, but I'm unsure of the 2 drives used for the windows storage space. The "Reset this PC" does have a "keep files" option, but I don't know if this is guaranteed to not effect the non-boot drives or if there is any risk. Any insight is welcome!

I've been off the game for over a year, but recently got back, so feel free to add me - CMDR RATVA

Thanks for the model reference and your experience with it! I had a look, and I think you're right - it's a bit above my budget, and I don't think I could justify the cost for features like the high refresh rate that I can't push with my current system. It seems like I might have to wait a bit longer for this search.

I'm mainly planning on using it for media consumption, with potential for some games like tomb raider.

Thanks, I'll have a look. Unfortunately the very first video when I click the link says he wouldn't recommend any hdr monitors yet, but I'll keep watching.

Thanks, there's actually a UK pc part picker but I'm afraid I looked there already. As good as it is, I suspect the list is not quite complete when it comes to monitors - if you disable all filters other than setting size to >24", and brightness to >440 nits then you only get 2 monitors (4K ones from Asus and LG selling for £2000 and £1500). Note I set minimum price to £1 so it removes the ones that aren't available. Maybe there are no monitors with more than 400 nits that are less than 4K, but that surprises me if it's true. That's why I made this thread hoping for anyone that might have used a decent hdr monitor first hand.

Hi there, I'm looking for a new screen - mainly for media consumption, but I also play cinematic games (i.e. don't need high FPS) such as Tomb Raider/Assasins Creed. I like to play these on max graphics - for reference I tend to get 50-70 fps average on Assassins Creed: Odyssey (bigger range if you look at the extremes). (I have a GTX 1070 and 6700K). Because of that, I'm looking for HDR but I heard 400 nits is the minimum but ideally you want 600 - 1000 nits. Has anyone had any luck with monitors that meet/exceed these requirements: Available in the UK HDR support (DisplayHDR600) Anything above 75% Adobe RGB should be fine. 24" or 27" Ideally 1440p or 4K, but would rather have good 1080p HDR than bad HDR at higher res, given my current graphics card. Normal ratio (no space for ultrawide) VESA Mount max. Price: £300, if not avoidable £400 I had a search through the forum but couldn't find threads that weren't focussed on also having freesync/high refresh rate. Thanks in advance!

TL;DR what filesystem/mirroring etc to use for 2 new drives in a desktop (not counting the SSD and existing HDD that will remain separate). Hi all, I currently have a 480GB SSD and a 2TB 7200 RPM HDD in my desktop, however I was running low on space so I bought two 6TB 5900 RPM (I believe) hard drives to migrate personal photos and videos to. I keep hearing how RAID is no match for new filesystems, and I was looking at the REFS filesystem, but it looks like windows 10 pro can no longer format drives to that filesystem. There doesn't seem to be an official ZFS port for windows yet, and as I want to put my personal photos on the new drives, I want something stable. What's the best (free/cheap) option out there? Should I stick to windows mirroring? 6TB is alright for me for now if I need to do RAID 1 (which is why I bought those drives) but if there is some method that relies on parity sections that leaves me with >6TB of usable space, then all the better. My top priority is securing my files. I'm a bit confused about how useful RAID 1 is in terms of preventing file corruption due to bad writes/RAM issues etc, or if it will just copy the error to both drives, so any clarification would be helpful. Finally, is there any real benefit to RAID vs leaving it as JBOD (I haven't opened the HDDs so I can probably still return one at this point). Note - I understand none of these solutions would be considered a backup. In regards to a NAS, it's not feasible right now though at some point I do want to invest in one. I have some of the more important (mainly older) files I care about backed up on the cloud/portable harddrives, and while new photos get resized and uploaded to google, there are probably months at a time where the only full size copy will be on my desktop. Thanks in advance!

[UK] Search for front panel USB Type A and Type C
ratva replied to ratva's topic in New Builds and Planning
For anyone interested - I had gotten in touch with Akasa about the link I posted in the OP, and got this reply: No indication as to what the price will be, but it looks like the product should be in stock in the UK within 2 weeks.- 5 replies

[UK] Search for front panel USB Type A and Type C
ratva replied to ratva's topic in New Builds and Planning
I did, however they only had either Type A only variants, or Type C only variants. As mentioned I'm looking for something with at least 2 type As and at least 1 type C. If no-one knows of any in particular I'll just wait till I can find/import the Akasa one.- 5 replies

[UK] Search for front panel USB Type A and Type C
ratva replied to ratva's topic in New Builds and Planning
Hi Bob, I appreciate the suggestions, however while the first link does support USB 3.1 gen 2 (10Gbps transfers), I wasn't sure about the quality since even in the demo photo the USB ports don't seem to line up. Have you had any experience with the brand? Unfortunately the other links only support up to USB 3.0 speeds (5Gbps) or include the ports I mentioned not wanting (e.g. Audio jacks/random memory card readers). I've should have said that I've had a look through Amazon listings but few support the 10Gbps traveler rate that's my main criteria, and most also have lots of ports that I do not want. Specifically the ports I would like are 2 or more USB type A (3.0 or above) 1 or more USB type C (3.1 gen 2) 0 or 1 SD card slot 0 or 1 microSD/TF card slot. Thanks. I'll update the op to clarify this.- 5 replies

TLDR: I'm looking for a front panel with at least 2 USB type A and at least 1 USB type C (running at 3.1 gen 2 speeds, i.e. 10 Gb/s). Something like the Akasa link below is ideal. Hi All, Currently my front I/O only has 2 USB ports (one of which is always taken up with a logitech wireless dongle - for some reason my mice all get poor connection if I put this dongle in the back of the case), so I wanted more front USB type A ports. I also wanted something with type C for future proofing. SD/microSD card readers would be nice but I have a USB adaptor for these so it's not an issue either way. Preferably I won't have anything else (i.e. no fan control, no TF reader or headphone jacks). I have a system with a Gigabyte Z170 XP-SLI motherboard, with a spare USB 3.0 header that I'd like to use for a USB front panel (I realise I won't get full 10Gb/s on the type C until I upgrade motherboards) inside a Phanteks Enthoo Pro M. I was looking at something like this from Akasa: http://www.akasa.co.uk/update.php?tpl=product/product.detail.tpl&no=181&type=Card Reader/Hub&type_sub=USB Hub&model=AK-ICR-32 however it's not available in the UK from what I can tell. Does any one have any recommendations for a decent quality front panel that is similar? I've seen a few things on Aliexpress (e.g. 1 and 2) however none of them will support anything beyond 3.0 speeds. Edit: Specifically: the ports I would like are 2 or more USB type A (3.0 or above, optionally with high power variants) 1 or more USB type C (3.1 gen 2) 0 or 1 SD card slot 0 or 1 microSD/TF card slot. No other ports. A decent build quality - either a well known brand or one that you've used that has good QA, I.e. Electronics shouldnt be loose/misaligned, etc. Thanks for the help.
