If you have a W10 pro you can disable automatic updates and install them yourself. Otherwise, a workaround is setting your connection to 'metered' which stops them from automatically downloading

It looks like you have a very old version of linux mint. Perhaps try updating mint and firefox to a newer version. Gmail and yahoo support current versions of firefox on every operating system. If you need to recover your password, I would advise either using a live CD to chroot in to change it or follow the guide you are currently using. That said, you should be able to update using sudo as opposed to using a root password.
